The finished 12mm thick pine structure feels sturdy and durable, with a water-based protective finish that helps shed moisture while blending naturally into tree trunks and garden settings. The layout is well-thought-out, featuring a wide landing porch and tiered footholds leading to a 3.15-inch entry hole guarded by a clever exterior panel that helps keep predators from reaching inside the nest chamber. Inside, the spacious 11 by 7.48-inch interior offers plenty of room for local squirrels and chipmunks to rest, and practical additions like bottom drainage holes and a swing-open front panel make seasonal cleanouts effortless. A Spacious and Well-Built Home for Backyard Squirrels
The squirrel house arrived securely packed with all the necessary hardware included. The solid pine panels feel sturdy, and the finished house is larger and more substantial than I expected. Assembly was straightforward once I matched the longer and shorter screws to the correct panels. After mounting it to a tree, the structure felt stable and secure. I especially like the roomy nesting compartment, the climbing rails, and the large front panel that makes it easier to inspect or clean the inside. The natural wood design also blends nicely into the backyard. Now we are just waiting for the first squirrel to move in.
Thoughtful Design for Wildlife Lovers
We enjoy watching and feeding squirrels in our yard, so this house has been a great addition. The wood has a pleasant natural pine appearance, and the engraved squirrel-family pattern makes the house look more decorative than a basic nesting box.We have already had some rain, and the inside remained dry. The instructions could explain the screw placement a little more clearly, but the parts were accurately cut and everything fit together well. Overall, it feels durable, practical, and thoughtfully designed.
I could have scratch built this. I'm glad I didn't.
I could have built something similar. Probably. But what’s the value of my time? And more importantly, would my design have been as good? Probably not. The predator guard never would have occurred to me. Owls are plentiful in the area and I can easily imagine babies being a tasty midnight snack. Someone who has thought longer about squirrels than I have earned their place in this design.
Assembly went well. The panels are nicely precut and the pieces fit together cleanly. I added a few extra #6, 1″ screws in spots where I thought they would add to longevity. Minor note: one panel had a gap of about 1/16″. Doubt mamma squirrel will give me a hard time for that. The wood is good quality. Nothing soft.
A couple of design details earned high marks. The drainage holes are a genuinely good idea. In our location, with about 45 inches of rain a year, water is bound to find its way in. Not in a flow, but seeping. The swing-open front face looks useful for seasonal cleaning. One concern: I wonder about the finish holding up in a damp climate over the long run. I added a coat of urethane over whatever the stock coating is. Can’t hurt, me thinks. May add a couple extra seasons of life. Time will tell.
First time as a squirrel encourager. We will see.
