Crenovo Organic Soy Wax for Candle Making, Paraffin-Free

Good soy wax, but better instructions are needed.
I’ve made candles off and on for years and have wanted to get back into creating again. I haven’t wanted to commit to a large amount of wax yet though so I thought this small kit might “re-light the fuse” of creativity.

This is in flake form and has a vaguely waxy scent, not surprisingly. The wicks, centering sticks, and wick stickers all come in a separate bag that’s a bit buried within the wax. There are some brief instructions regarding melting on the outside package but they are not detailed so I’m going to share my own process and experience.

The suggested melt temperature is listed as 170-185, and I used the double boiler method to melt to about 180 degrees and got a nice even melt. The instructions on the bag do not list a fragrance load recommendation, but the listing says up to 10% and I chose to go with a 6% berry blend fragrance oil which I added when the temperature was at 165, then I poured into my four-ounce container at 160 degrees. I had already placed my wick and centering stick as well so it was easy to just pour and leave it. It hardened evenly and for a soy wax I thought the top came out smooth. Often, I end up using a heat gun to smooth out the surface but that wasn’t necessary here.

I normally wait 1-2 weeks to burn soy candles but decided to test this after a few days. Using the supplied wick, my candle developed a relatively small melt pool and left a ring of unmelted wax around the edge during testing. The pool started out even but changed over time and favored one side. There is also a small pit forming, which isn’t ideal. I do have nice jar adhesion and there is very little pulling from the sides, which is always something I like to see.

After a few days of curing, the cold throw (scent while unlit) was fairly light, while the hot throw was noticeably better. Since the listing states this wax can accommodate up to a 10% fragrance load, I may increase my fragrance percentage in a future batch.

I’m not entirely disappointed with my results though, but I do think the instructions should be more detailed. Different waxes are formulated for different projects, and while the listing suggests this wax can be used for multiple applications, it doesn’t explain any limitations, or which uses it is best suited for. There is also no recommended pour temperature, and that does matter for quality and performance. In addition, there is no suggested container size for the wicks, and wicks are not one-size-fits-all, but specific to the size of the vessel. I think with improved instructions creators would stand a better chance of success.

This is a decent kit for practicing candle making, or if you’re like me, a way to reenter a once-loved hobby. That said, the instructions need to be improved upon with more explicit directions, in order for creators to have successful projects.
