The Japanese mats are well made, and have no odor to them. They fold into three sections making them easy to store when not needed. They are very firm to sleep on, and if you have a bad back like me they are just too stiff. The kids seem to love them though. When placed in the floor on hardwood or linoleum they can be a bit slippery if you walk on them. They seem to Glide across the floor. On carpet they are a bit more comfortable since you have a bit of padding underneath, but they are still very stiff. The math work great for extra house guests like around the holidays when relatives come in to visit. With them being very stiff, the guest don’t seem to want to stay very long, but it is better than sleeping on the floor. It is a great short-term solution four times like the holidays or when all of the grandkids want to come and spend the night. They are all young and have no problem sleeping on the mats. I thought they were a bit pricey for what they are, but I am unsure how much they would normally go for anyway, so you will have to judge their value for yourself.
I didn’t know what to totally expect when I ordered this, I didn’t know if it would be slightly cushiony or closer to rock hard. It’s actually closer to hard than any sort of cushion and this fact gives you plenty of options on what you can do with it.
It comes in two segments, each fold out into a basically twin size bed area. Longer than it is wide obviously, and you would have to be over 7 feet tall to not fit on it.
One side of the thing is like a straw mat (it.s about 1.5 inches thick) and the other side is a more fine wicker type of material. Both sides are useful for different things. Last night I lounged on it,wicker side up, kept me cool and left the straw side down so it wouldnl’t slide around. On a carpet the straw side would prevent any sliding whatsoever.
And if I wanted to exercise I would likely want the same side facing up. But if I was playing with my cats or wanted something more stylish (don’t know why) I would leave the straw side up,. It can also be used to firm up a bed under a mattress, which i will also use it for.
Overall this thing is versatile, it has strong rigid corners, is easy to fold up and put away, and doesn’t look like it will fray or split any time soon. If you wanted to sleep directly on it so you were not on the floor — you could, but it’s good for so many other things. 4 stars.
2 mats easy to store
Its a well made mat. Materials seem sturdy. Has 3 segments you can fold and put away. I put my mattress on top and it’s good to go. Can be a little slippery on wood floors if you walk on them.
I was excited to try this Japanese foldable floor sleeping mat, and while I do think it’s a nice quality product, I’m not sure I understand the hype. For me, it feels a little overpriced for what you get.
The construction is good, and it appears to be well made. However, it is extremely firm. Personally, I found it much better suited for floor exercises than sleeping. I could definitely see myself using it for stretching, yoga, Pilates, or even physical therapy exercises, especially with a yoga mat on top to provide a little extra grip.
As a sleeping mat, though, it just wasn’t for me. It does provide a layer of firm support compared to lying directly on the floor, but I personally wouldn’t find it comfortable enough to sleep on. That said, this is coming from someone with no experience sleeping on traditional Japanese bedding, so others who are accustomed to that style may feel differently.
One thing that surprised me is that this is actually made up of two separate narrow mats rather than one large connected mat. If you’re planning to use it for two people, you’ll likely need to find a way to keep the pieces together.
It does fold up for storage, which is convenient, although it’s still fairly bulky once folded. I could see storing it under a bed or standing it in a closet when not in use.
In terms of ease of use, it’s simple to fold and unfold, and the overall quality is nice. I just think the value for money is a little harder to justify unless you’re specifically looking for a very firm floor mat.
Overall, it’s a well-made product, but I think it works better as an exercise or therapy mat than as a sleeping mat, at least for my personal preferences.
Firm Tatami Mat with Traditional Feel
I have been using this ZonLi Japanese tatami mat as a base for a floor sleeping setup, and it has delivered the firm, supportive feel I was looking for. The natural coconut shell fiber and jute fiber construction gives it a traditional tatami-like firmness that provides a stable sleeping surface without excessive cushioning. It has also worked well as a foundation under a futon mattress, adding extra support and structure.
The foldable design is one of its most practical features. It is easy to fold and store when not in use, making it a good option for multipurpose rooms or guest spaces where a permanent bed is not practical. The queen size provides ample space for two people, and the mat lays flat once it has had time to settle after being unfolded.
The overall construction feels durable and well made. The natural materials give it an authentic appearance and a breathable feel that helps prevent moisture buildup beneath the mattress. It has remained supportive with regular use, and the surface has maintained its shape without noticeable sagging. I also appreciate that it adds a clean, minimalist look to the room.
There are a few things to keep in mind. This is a firm sleeping surface by design, so it may not be comfortable for those who prefer a plush mattress. It may also have a mild natural scent when first unpacked, but mine diminished after being aired out for a short time. Overall, this is a well-crafted tatami mat that offers excellent support, quality materials, and a traditional sleeping experience for anyone interested in a floor bed setup.
