Tricky instructions! Use a drill!
I am an experienced IKEA furniture assembler and this little shelf put all my skills to the test. Especially resilience. I had to take it apart a few times and put it back together because I made some simple mistakes but mostly because the instructions were not awful intuitive. If you read the words you’ll probably do a bit better than relying on the pictures alone!
That said, the shelf itself fits together nicely, all the parts were there, and it’s a classy bit of construction. But it’s not everything. It makes you work for the $60 price instead of leaving you feeling like you got a screaming deal.
What would make it feel like a bargain would be:
-if the inner shelf was stabilized to be able to use it as a divider if the unit is placed on its side. This would allow for better sorting of veggies. (As-is the inner shelf is simply resting on adjustable pegs, therefore relying on gravity to remain there).
-if the doors opened all the way instead of just the inner two
I’m using mine as an entryway closet for little things like keys and my crossbody bag, so the entryway feels cleaner. Just based on trying to fit things in it, I’m not confident this would be very effective as a large-capacity bread cupboard (unless you’re a roll kind of person. Rolls would fit well.) but it would definitely hold a fair few veggies!
So. If you’re well-off and looking for a classy-as-all-get-out secret pedestal upon which to place a loaf or two of your artisan, locally crafted sourdough bread: this is it. If you’re a mom with delicious thick loaves of aspen Mills honey whole wheat, three kinds of tortillas, and a tube of English muffins to keep the family going, this probably isn’t the bread cupboard for you. It would just make you feel like you have too much bread and not enough artisan sourdough.
Fragile edges, but a really nice looking cabinet once assembled
This is marketed as a bread box and it would do that job just fine. My bread basket currently sits in a corner and we all know what happens to kitchen countertop corners. This box would be a solution to the tidiness situation. Once assembled, however, I decided it would make a really nice cabinet for spices and small items that I use regularly and have to go fishing for.
Assembly is rather straightforward. I did it myself at the kitchen island with a Philips screwdriver and a cup of coffee. The coffee wasn’t in the instructions but I find it usually helps haha. Unlike a lot of flat pack imports, there was no tool included, but a screwdriver is all it takes. And I really don’t need another piece of single use metal to figure out what to do with.
It makes no difference what vertical direction you mount the door pieces. What does matter is what side the beveled/angled edges are on, which is always the inside next to the next piece. This is because the doors sit on a slight curve. When the pieces are in front of you it makes sense even though the instructions (mostly graphics) don’t really point this out.
Speaking of edges, they are quite fragile. You can tell from the paint job that this isn’t necessarily grade A wood. The same could be said for the paint, as the edges were already noticeably chipped of paint coming out of the box. Take care during assembly not to damage the edges. Once it’s fully assembled, they seem to be mostly out of harm’s way. I ordered black, so I was able to touch up the missing paint chips with a Sharpie marker.
The instructions put the shelf in place before assembling the top, but I found this actually made things a bit more difficult. The shelf can be added once everything else is put together. There’s plenty of space inside and in the doorway to add the shelf later. It’s not permanently attached. This also means there’s no set top or bottom to this cabinet. Without the shelf, it’s exactly the same regardless of what side you place on the counter.
Although I got this together without too much grief on my own, a second set of hands could be helpful during the first couple of steps because the back corner is held in place by tension rather than screws and there’s not adequate tension until more pieces are screwed together. It’s just a tip to speed up the job and make it easier.
The missing star is for the really fragile edges and missing paint. I shouldn’t have to repair something out of the box. I also don’t care for the glaring screw heads visible. Maybe include black screws for the black unit, or even little paper stickers to cover the screws like some other products do would be an improvement. That aside, I’m happy with the way it looks and the amount of stuff it can hold.
