This is really awesome. It’s made out of really good treated wood. The squirrels go in and out and I recommend this one. It’s really heavy duty. It’s a little expensive but it’s worth it.
Well made squirrel house
This is an amazing squirrel house! So big with easy to follow instructions for putting everything together. It’s very well made with pre-drilled holes that align easily and clear-coat paint on the sides facing outward. Extra screws were included for the assembly as well as longer screws to attach to the tree trunk. Has a safe guard inside to keep the squirrels safe from predators. Fits in my budget and I will purchase more. Highly recommend. I can’t wait to see who moves in!
Having given up trying to keep the squirrels away, I decided to concede that they are far smarted than I am, and I ordered this squirrel hose as a gesture of good will. Here are my observations. Overall, it’s a good product but not a great one.
The good:
1. All the wooden parts are solid and a nice color.
2. All necessary screws and even a little Philips screwdriver are included.
3. Each piece is clearly labeled with a number.
4. Assembly directions are fairly straightforward on a single, wordless sheet.
5. The pieces are all predrilled where necessary.
6. There are swivel tabs for hanging on a flat, vertical surface, and predrilled holes for mounting it to a tree (the most likely place it would go).
7. The entire front panel swivels up to allow access to the inside.
8. The overall finished product seems sturdy and well designed for squirrels to get in and out.
The not so good:
1. In some cases, the numbered labels are insufficient, as the assembly diagrams are not always clear. It would be better if the labels included front/back/up/down. I found this out the hard way, as usual.
2. The wood is “carbonized pine” and not real cedar. It is relatively soft, so excess torque when tightening screws must be avoided. Also, pine will not keep insects away. Real, red cedar would have been better.
3. Not a single extra screw is provided.
4. The front panel is secured by a screw, an annoyance for opening or securing it closed, especially if you’re on a ladder. I applied some Velcro scrips instead.
5. There is no viewing port. Once this house is inhabited, you will not be able to see your tenants. A small acrylic panel would be a big improvement.
6. Because of its overall design and materials, there is nothing to prevent it from becoming the perfect hornets’ nest. You’ll need to apply petroleum jelly and peppermint oil on the inner roof to keep them away. Hopefully, the squirrels won’t mind the smell.
I’ve had a few squirrels go in to collect the nuts I placed inside, but none have taken up residence, most likely because it’s already too late in the season, or perhaps because they’ve already signed leases for other spots. Maybe next yea
Easy Assembly, sturdy desig
Took less than 20 minutes to put together (used a drill). Instructions are straightforward. and the pieces are clearly identified. Only 2 sets of screws and those are easy to identify and separate. For the most part, the parts align correctly and the pieces fit tightly. The squire design on the front is a nice touch and overall gives it a quality look. Highly recommend it.
