Works as desired
Works as desired. I was able to Lasso a post using my Skid Steer (without a helper and without getting off the skid steer) and easily pull a 6″ and 8″ diameter post (one with concrete at the base and the other without) out of the ground, carry it to where I wanted to put it and lay it down and remove the fence puller (without a helper and without getting off the skid steer). I was afraid it would bend the fence puller but it did not warp/bend. I used a 6 foot web nylon strap that I bough at Tractor Supply (much cheaper than at AMAZON). I could have probably built this device with 1/2″ to 3/4″ steel with my CNC table and plasma torch for about 6 bucks.
The CATS MEOW!
This is the CATS MEOW! We had been wrapping a chain around the posts to pull up them out, which would slip off and took several tries to get it pulled up. This fence puller is awesome! It is very a heavy duty, thick metal with a nice black painted finish. This has made the job so much easier! We use our tractor with a chain on the bucket to hook on to the puller. 5 stars, as that was the highest I could go!
Post Puller, Easy Attach, Works Great, Some Issues
We recently acquired a property that has horse fence installed covering about six to seven acres. The fence was made using electric fence wire and metal fence posts with plastic insulators. The land these posts are driven into can be soft clay or black soil, and more commonly, soft soil the first six inches, then solid shale for as deep as they go. Those driven into stone can be impossible to extract without some type of hydraulic.
I have tried several post extractors including jacks and root pullers, but this little tool has been the easiest to implement.
You’ll need a chain. I got a short, five foot chain and put two grab hooks on either end to make the length adjustable. Then, because I’m pulling small diameter metal posts, I ran the chain through the larger hole, adjusted it’s length and looped it over the teeth on my bucket.
This worked, but its not perfect. Pulling the posts is easy, but setup for each pull is tricky and you need a helper unless you enjoy climbing in and out of a track loader. I found that initially, someone needs to slip the small hole in the puller, over the metal post. Once the post is pulled, meaning the bucket is high off the ground, it immediately starts swinging, coming awfully close to hitting the glass windshield of my skid steer.
Thinking there must be a way I could use this tool without leaving the skid steer to hook up every post. I finally decided to buy a hitch that has a hook on it. Using this, I just lower the tool over the post. It can be tedious getting it through the small hole but practice makes perfect. Doing this, I was able to pull every post I could line up with the notches facing away from skid steer without leaving the drivers seat.
This tool is a great idea and definitely works. I’m still thinking about ways I might could improve its use but for now, it’s made this a one-man job and is saving me a lot of time.
