This is not typical for regular daily, school or office usage. I know this more because not only have I worked in the Laptop/Printer technology field for a long time now, including the laptop with printer hype by Canon NoteJet back in the 90s. During the 90s, a lot of technology production was done on having portable offices even portable printers and scanners so I know a thing or two about portable office technologies because I personally even bought the Canon NoteJet which is a laptop with built-in printer, and I’ve used a portabel scanner as well as portable printers.
First and foremost why this is primarily for emergency printing uses – this is a THERMAL PRINTER which is similar to supermarket stores/gas station receipt printer. For example your Costco Gas purchase receipt with carwash, they use their fingernail to mark off the receipt used in carwash to void it out, because the actual ink is within the thermal paper. The problem with thermal paper is that any sligh scratch will cause an ink like appearance and here’s another even bigger concern. This ink is a dissappearing ink, especially in hot weather. Think of having that costco receipt in your wallet after more than a month and specially in hot weather, most of the ink will dissappear.
This is a common property of thermal printer and papers. This makes it not practical for regular printing but rather only for emergency printing where no nearby printer is accessible. For example, you need to print a document that needs to be a physical copy of a document, this is your best tool to use and secondary is that the printed characters/fonts ink like graphics will all but dissappear. Why print here for emergency, if you needed a document in a rush and then when you get a chance use a copier for the document printed or a scanner to save as a file.
This is a nifty little printer. It is small, sleek and works well for specific functions. It is easy to set up and use. Being a thermal printer, it prints everything in black and white, not color.
This printer is truly small and light. I have a small laptop bag and this fits in neatly with the laptop. That is really convenient. I slip the thermal paper on the side and I am good to go. I can print on it easily from my phone or my laptop, and although I usually only print from my laptop, I tried both.
The prints are good enough but not of top quality. They are not very crisp and sharp but then, that is not something that I require. Other than my using it on the road, my daughter uses it to print out her art when she is outdoors. This way she can determine how her art looks on paper and not just on her screen. She also uses this printer for short term references during study.
I agree that being a thermal printer, I do not need to purchase inks. But I do need to keep a stock of thermal paper that I do not use on my regular printer.
Another issue is that printing on thermal paper gradually lightens and then disappears over time. So these prints are only temporary. Any documents that require long term storage should be photocopied onto regular paper.
Also, thermal paper gets marks very easily. Like on store receipts which are also printed on thermal paper, folding will cause fold marks over time.
If these issues can be sidestepped or overcome or are not hinderances, this printer is very useful. I know that I use mine quite a bit since I received it as does my daughter.
This is a good product and the current price of $39.99 is very reasonable.
