My grandson already has the MAGNA-TILES Classic 100-piece set at home, and it’s one of his favorite toys. Since we’ve started adding a few smaller themed sets to his collection, I decided this larger Rail Racers Max set would stay at our house so he’d have something equally exciting to play with whenever he comes to visit.
The first person who became excited about this set wasn’t even my grandson.
It was my husband.
He’s a retired schoolteacher who spent years helping children build, create, and solve problems. The moment he saw all the track pieces, balls, trap door, and rails, I could practically see the wheels turning in his head as he imagined everything he wanted to build.
I had to gently remind him that when our grandson gets here, he needs to let the little guy take the lead first.
One of the things we’ve learned from our daughter is how important it is to let children explore a new toy on their own before the adults jump in with ideas. We want to see where his imagination takes him first, then join in once he’s had the chance to create something of his own.
That doesn’t mean Papa won’t be counting the minutes until it’s his turn.
This 80-piece set is substantial enough to be a complete building experience by itself. Unlike some of the smaller companion sets, this one doesn’t rely on owning another MAGNA-TILES collection. It includes familiar magnetic tiles along with curved rails, various shaped rail tracks, a trap door, and two balls that add an entirely new level of creative play.
One of the things I’ve come to appreciate about MAGNA-TILES is the quality. A few years ago I bought my grandson an inexpensive off-brand magnetic tile set. He absolutely loved it, but over time magnets began falling out of the pieces until many of them had to be thrown away. Since replacing that set with the MAGNA-TILES Classic collection, he has played with them every single day. He builds towering creations, crashes them down with great enthusiasm, and starts all over again. Not a single magnet has come loose. That kind of durability has completely changed my opinion of paying a little more for the original brand.
This Rail Racers set feels every bit as well made. The magnets are strong, the tiles connect securely, and everything has the same high-quality feel as the Classic set we already own.
The only thing I’d love to see included is a dedicated carrying/storage case. The box works perfectly well for storing everything, but a sturdy case with a handle would make it much easier for children to carry the set from one house to another without hauling around such a large box. It’s certainly portable enough for visits to Grandma’s house, but with eighty pieces, I probably wouldn’t hand it to a three-year-old to play with in the back seat of the car unless I wanted to spend the trip retrieving pieces from under the seats.
Although the recommended age is older than my three-year-old grandson, he’ll be enjoying this set with plenty of adult supervision. As he gets older, I can already see him building more elaborate tracks and experimenting with different layouts. That’s one of the things I appreciate most about open-ended toys like these. They grow with the child instead of becoming outdated after a few months.
At $89.99, this isn’t an inexpensive toy. However, after seeing how incredibly well our original MAGNA-TILES have held up through daily, enthusiastic play, I honestly think it’s money well spent. These are the kinds of toys I can easily imagine being tucked away and one day brought back out for another generation to enjoy.
Lots of fun, but expensive of course
We love Magna-tiles at our house. Our son has a blast with them, and this set is no different. The theming and color variations are all nice, and the product of course is a blast for kids. They’re great for creativity and both my son and his cousins always enjoy playing with them. This Rail Racers set is quite expensive at $90, though there is a good bit to it (even if most of the parts are smaller on this one). This set is probably better for slightly older kids, but as far as value for money it’s about as good as it gets with Magna-Tiles these days. I do feel like Magna-Tiles have gotten unsustainably expensive, and we’ve had QC issues with other sets (pieces breaking both externally and internally, some leaving sharp parts exposed- but this set has been fine.
High price tag, but great quality se
A super fun, high-quality set that takes magnetic tiles to the next level! Adding track pieces, slides, and balls to standard magnetic tiles is a total game-changer. It gives kids (and adults!) endless ways to build raceways and experiment with motion, making for hours of screen-free fun that grows with your child.
Pros:
Built like a tank: Super strong magnets and riveted plastic mean tall builds stay up, and tiles won’t fall apart.
Awesome interactive pieces: Tracks, ramps, and a trapdoor bring tons of new life to magnetic building.
Plenty in the box: With 80 pieces, you get enough right out of the box to build complete tracks without needing another set.
Plays well with others: Bright, vibrant colors that mix seamlessly into existing tile collections.
Cons:
A bit pricey: It’s an investment for a non-electronic toy, though the long-term durability makes it worth it.
Needs better storage: The box has tons of wasted space, and a reusable tote bag or carrying case would be way better.
Only 2 balls included: You’ll definitely want to keep a close eye on them so they don’t get lost!
Overall, an incredibly durable, super engaging toy that is highly recommended for builders of almost any age! Just know these toys demand a premium price
Hefty foundational magnet tile se
My kids are the biggest fans of magna tiles and even though they’re younger than the recommended age for this particular set, they absolutely adore it and the set is significant enough to be a major gift for birthday or Christmas, but it’s also something that multiple kids can play with at the same time. I’ve purchased smaller magnet tile sets with the challenge that there’s only one interesting piece and so one child always feels left out. This is not that set. This offers balls and slides and towers that can be crashed. There is an opportunity to play with large square builders roads or smaller tiles so if you have little ones that are still working on dexterity, this is a great option. The colors are gender, neutral they’re great pinks and greens and aqua and neons that make this work but a vast majority of the pieces themselves are clear. I’ve had no issues with this set working with both magna tile and Picasso tiles. I also have some of the Crayola magnet tile cars, and these work on the track. Also, my kids honestly even like putting hot wheels down the little slides that they build and this creates even more opportunities for extended play. I will caution you that the box is actually kind of heavy. I was surprised when I was bringing it into the house. This was a major Christmas gift for my kids last year and came at the recommendation of their speech. Therapist who told me that play like this actually encourages speech and language development. I love this toy my kids love this toy. You’re going to get years out of it and so if you take it as an investment, you feel a little bit better about the price the qualities is great and honestly, my kids even play while eating and it’s so easy to wipe off peanut butter or jelly or whatever they spill on it. this is such a low maintenance toy that you can get yours out of.
They Play With This Every Day
My 9 and 5 year old love Magna Tiles and already have a bunch of different sets, so they were really excited about this one. They connected it with pieces from their other sets to make the track bigger and have been playing with it pretty much every day. The pieces are a good size, the colors are really vibrant, and everything connects like it should. We’ve had some of their Magna Tiles for a long time and they hardly ever break, and these feel like the same quality. They’re definitely more expensive than some magnetic tiles, but for how much my kids use them and how long they last, I think they’re always worth the money.
MAGNA-TILES never disappoint, and this set was a huge hit with my boys. They spent hours building different track designs and competing to see whose racer could go fastest. Great quality and plenty of creative fun packed into one set.
Hours of fun for my toddler!
This rail racer set has been a huge hit with my toddler. She loves building different track layouts and watching the cars race through them. It’s a fun change from traditional magnetic tile builds and adds another layer of creativity.
The tiles connect securely, the pieces feel sturdy, and everything has held up well to daily play. I also appreciate that it’s compatible with our other magnetic tile sets, so we can build even bigger tracks and structures.
This has quickly become one of the toys she reaches for most often and has been well worth adding to our collection.
Pros
* Fun racing concept that keeps kids engaged
* Encourages creativity and problem-solving
* Compatible with other magnetic tile brands
* Durable pieces with strong magnets
* Gets lots of use
Cons
* None so fa
This was a wonderful gift for our 5-year-old son. He already loves Magna-Tiles, but I think any kid who enjoys building, tracks, or experimenting with how things move would have a great time with this set.
The racetrack concept is really cool because it adds a completely different type of play. You can build elevated tracks, curves, ramps, bridges, and all kinds of different courses for the balls. Our son spends a lot of time changing things around to see what works, what makes the ball move faster, and how elaborate he can make the course.
One of the reasons I still like buying Magna-Tiles is that they are the OG magnetic tiles, and there is a noticeable level of quality here that you do not always get with some of the cheaper knockoffs. The magnets feel strong, the pieces fit together nicely, and the whole set feels durable and well made. We have sets from our 11-year-old that still look and play like new.
It is also a substantial standalone set with plenty of pieces to build with right out of the box. If you already own other Magna-Tiles, everything works together, but you definitely do not need another set to enjoy this one. Love MAGNA-TILES.
