I’m shocked that it has been barely touched on in the reviews that you have to assemble this completely. At a price point of almost $60 I was shocked to receive a box of a bunch of boards, wood screws, and at least a screwdriver. I will say that the wood smells good and seems to be a good thickness and quality. Once completed this is a very nice squirrel house – but if you’re thinking about sending this to your grandmother as a gift for her bird and squirrel watching adventures, you might want to rethink it. I could not find anywhere in the description that says you have to assemble with the exception of under “what’s in the box” says boards and screws. There is some effort that has to go into putting this birdhouse together. You can’t tighten everything while you’re building it because then it will be off square. The end product is very nice and good quality. It does take some time and some elbow grease to put it together. However, at this price point, i believe it should be fully assembled and packed ready to hang. If this were closer to $40 and specifically stated that there was assembly required, this would be 5 Star all the way. I just feel like this is a bit misleading in the description. If you have an electric or cordless screwdriver, I would highly recommend. The components are quality, I like that it has a little window, and there is ventilation at the bottom. So overall, this is a well thought out squirrel house. I will say that if you plan on attaching this to a trade, your best bet is to do so before you put the roof on. The holes to screw it into the tree or on the interior. You can access them by lifting the front – but then it is a tight squeeze. I find this item to be quality, but not a good value because it is completely unassembled and everything leads you to believe it is a completed house.

This squirrel box is so adorable. You do have to put it together. It was surprisingly easy to follow the directions and quick if you use a drill instead of the screwdriver.
The lock is already attached, which took me a few minutes to figure out. “Lock” is just a slim piece of metal (I’ve included a photo of it) that swings to the left to keep it closed.
There’s also a piece of wood right below the entrance hole inside to keep raccoons, cats or other predators you may have out of the boxes interior floor area. Try to put it where they can’t lay and wait for the squirrel to come out though.
I’d like to put a camera in mine since they are so adorable in their nest.
There are nice ventilation holes on the one side and the bottom besides the entrance hole.
I thought it was so cute in the listing, but it is even cuter once it’s built and you see it in person. I’m excited to get it up in the tree before fall so that my adorable little Douglas squirrels can move in!
For the price just shy of $50 this is going to provide hours of enjoyment for myself and a safe habitat for those sweet squirrels.
The Squirrels Will Love it!
What a fun project! But for now, after assembly and putting it in place, the squirrels we have aren’t sure it’s for them. Hmmm?
Well made parts that go together easily while following the directions-instructions it makes for a much simpler project to look over, read and think about the process of making this little squirrel house. Looks great! Maybe I’ll smear peanut butter on it! Just kidding. It’s new to them (the squirrels) and my scent is probably all over it. Im sure it will be accepted for use either that or the birds will take it over! maybe I’ll put a fake bird nearby- at the door make the furry fellas jealous! Or TV!
All that’s for the fun of it. Great project looks great- best materials. Just follow the directions. All VeryGood!
My daughter and I watch the wildlife in our area all the time. We have a lot of squirrels so we have a collection of squirrel houses for our little friends. My daughter does a lot of photography work so this squirrel house will be great with the viewing window. This squirrel house is nice and deep for a squirrel family to make a nest and be protected. The house was easy to assemble. All the screw holes are prefilled and they included a screwdriver to put the screws in. It comes with step by step instructions that are really easy to follow. My daughter and I built this one together and it is a great project to do with your kids or grandkids. Great way to have good quality time with the kids and make some great memories. I really like the viewing window in this house and the front panel lifts up for easy cleaning when a squirrel family moves out. It has holders for corn cobs on the front which for us can only be used if we can put the house up high enough otherwise the deer will eat all the corn. The opening for the squirrels to enter the house is a nice size but the only concern is that there is no predator block so we will add one to be sure our squirrels are always safe. This is a really good quality squirrel house and if you love watching squirrels like we do it is a great value for the price.
Quality made wood products are hard to find. When I spot them… well…
This squirrel house is awesome! Almost 3/8 inch solid, aromatic wood! This house must be put together. It is pre-drilled, this helps keep the wood from splitting. Other than 1 hole that was not drilled deep enough, the drilled spots matched up fairly well (it’s not a church after-all). Once together it is SOLID! The front has a latch and the front ‘wall’ flips open for easy seasonal cleaning.
This house has a ‘peek-a-boo’ acrylic window that can slide open for viewing. Ours was not pre-drilled, there are a few ‘starburst cracks’ in the acrylic where the screws are located — this was factory done. Squirrels are wild animals, I do not suggest getting close to view. It has vent holes on the side, near the top and a ‘raccoon guard’ inside which prevents raccoons from reaching in and grabbing baby squirrels.
Many enjoy watching the antics of squirrels and love feeding them. There are 2 rods that attach to the front platform where you can place ears of corn — one of their favorite snacks.
For us, we find squirrels a bit bothersome, since we enjoy the birds. We intend on putting this underneath our Owl House — also from Amazon, and beautiful solid wood. We’re hoping to provide extra food for our owls … just kidding! We will be gifting this to someone who does love squirrels 😉
This kit was a “natural” for someone who loves squirrels and wants to enjoy their antics. It truly is a “high-rise” condo!
At first, when I read the description online, the word “kit” escaped me, but I found that it was actually fun working with my husband to put together the pieces. The box arrived with precut wooden pieces ready for assembly. Included was a small screwdriver and a set of illustrated, easy-to-follow instructions. There was a content list which at first looked incomplete because I didn’t see a lock. As it turns out, the lock was already installed. Working together with both a screw driver and a power drill, it took us about 40 minutes. The holes were well placed and drilled, which made assembly fairly simple. Words of advice: (1) when you apply the front to the sides, don’t put the screws in too tightly. That piece will rotate up so you can clean the box and affix the box to a tree or board; (2) in the directions it shows attaching the corn rods first and then fastening the top panel, but it might be easier to manipulate the house if the corn rods were put in last; (3) to install the house later, the corn rods have to be removed to allow access to the interior holes.
What makes this house so great? You can peek inside the house through the sliding glass window. (Can’t wait to see baby squirrels nestled in there!) The rotating front makes it a cinch to clean out old nests and put in new straw or leaves for the squirrel family. The size of the entry is large enough to accommodate a squirrel but should keep out most predators. Dinner is served on the front “porch!”
We were delighted with the finished product. Any squirrel would be thrilled to have this for its home or nesting box. It is solid, secure, airy, and contains such features as external climbing grooves and a sloped roof to help rain drain off the top. There is a ledge on which stainless steel screws hold dried corn.
This wooden squirrel house would make a great gift for anyone who likes these cute, furry fellows and a lot of fun to assembly as a family project. While the house will belong to the squirrels, you’re the one who’ll get great pleasure in watching your tenants!
This was easy to put together for the most part, but there were a couple of things that didn’t match the instructions. Mine didn’t include the small screws that were mentioned, although I believe those were supposed to be for the lock, which was already installed when it arrived. I also never found a use for the two larger screws. They may be intended for mounting, but there are already four mounting holes on the back.
The only part that gave me trouble was the roof. If I lined the predrilled holes up, the roof didn’t reach all the way to the back of the box. Fortunately, the wood is soft enough that I was able to drill my own pilot holes and make it work without much effort.
I chose not to install the corn skewers because I’m actually hoping to attract some of the Eastern screech owls I’ve been hearing around my property. Realistically, though, the hundreds of squirrels in my backyard will probably claim it long before the owls get a chance! The box itself seems well made, and I like the removable front panel and viewing window for easy cleaning and checking on any future occupants.
