This is a really cute and well-made little insect hotel! The wooden house design looks great outside, and I like that it has a variety of bamboo tubes, pine cones, and different spaces that are meant to attract beneficial bugs like mason bees, ladybugs, and butterflies.
It’s only been outside for a few days, so we haven’t had any tiny tenants move in yet! I plan to update this review later once we’ve had a chance to see whether it actually attracts some bugs and how well it holds up outdoors. So far, though, I really like the design and think it makes a fun addition to the garden.
This insect hotel has it all. Tons of all natural bamboo tubes for the bees, pinecones, wood shavings, and slots to hidden areas. This will attract not just bees but also ladybugs, lacewings, butterflies, and more. The construction of this hotel is great with lots of attention to the little details. The front wire mesh can be removed and stapled back on allowing you to replace the pinecones and wood shavings whenever you need to. The roof has a cute design and slopes down insuring that any rain or snow falls right off. Everything came pre built and ready to hang. I’m hanging mine on a wooden fence nearby my pollinator garden. I’m genuinely impressed with the quality of this for the price. It’s also bigger than other insect houses I’ve had before, and it smells so good with all the different natural woods and items used. I look forward to seeing my bug friends using this to sleep, eat, and keep their eggs safe. I would definitely recommend this!
Cutest little bug/critter motel I ever did see
How exciting!!! First off I never even knew such a thing existed!! I’m lover of all critters and most bugs. My two boys 6 and 8 yr old naturally have followed. Right now they are into bird watching and bugs. Butterfly caterpillars and bees. We tend to feed everything. We have a small farm. Sort of like a Charlotte’s Web. We have managed to make homes for everything except the butterflies/caterpillars and bees (except our hive). When my boys seen this they had to have it.
It’s made very well. I think it’s going to hold up pretty well. It’s definitely heavier than I anticipated it to be. They used good real wood. Not fake flimsy stuff. Whoever thought of this did very well. They thought each part out perfectly. There’s two little rolled up wooden straw like sections. Fencing with some pine chips inside. Little tiny peg holes for the really tiny guys. Fencing with two small pinecones. And open close ventilation door on bottom. There is something for everyone. I can’t wait to see how the critters all take to it. I was thinking of putting it on a tree close to our bee hive. I notice a lot of critters tend to hang around the outside of the hive as if they don’t really have a spot to go. Maybe some of them will jump on in this thing. We shall see. Some lucky bug will find this palace. I can’t wait to check back in a few days to see who did. This is a great idea and I will for sure be purchasing more of these. Cute idea.
Nice decorative insect housebut 100% waterproof? Idk about tha
My brother and his wife are building a new garden at their house, and I wanted to get them something nice to put in it. I came across this insect hotel and thought it would be perfect.
Overall, I’m pretty impressed with it. It is much larger and more substantial than a lot of the little insect houses I have seen, and it actually looks nice enough to serve as a decorative piece in the garden. There are several different types of compartments designed to attract different beneficial insects, including lots of hollow bamboo tubes in different diameters, drilled wooden nesting holes, pine cones, wood shavings, and other protected areas. I also like that some of the loose materials are held securely behind wire mesh rather than just being stuffed into open compartments where they could easily fall out.
The construction is decent for something like this, and I especially like the little overlapping wooden shingles on the roof. They give it a much nicer appearance than a simple flat piece of wood would. There are also two metal keyhole-style hangers on the back, so it should be pretty easy to securely mount it to a wall, fence, tree, or post.
My biggest concern is how well it is going to hold up outdoors. The listing claims that it is “100% waterproof,” but I have very little faith that this would last very long exposed to rain, snow, and sun exactly as it comes out of the box. Much of the wood is fairly thin and appears to have little or no protective finish on it. The thin wooden roof shingles in particular seem like they could start curling, splitting, or deteriorating after repeated exposure to moisture.
Before I give it to them, I plan on staining the roof and exterior frame to give the wood some additional protection while leaving the actual nesting tubes and interior areas untreated. Hopefully that will help it last for several seasons.
For $36, I think it is a really neat addition to a garden and would make a great gift for someone who enjoys gardening, pollinators, or wildlife. I just think the “100% waterproof” claim is overly optimistic and that it could use a better exterior finish from the factory.
I’ll definitely update my review next season once it has spent some time outside and, hopefully, some insects start making use of it. For now, I think 4 stars is fair.
A cute home for pollinator bees and butterflies
This is a big hit at our house! This is a nice and large bee and butterfly house that helps support pollinators with materials for them to live and lay larvae. This comes with a wide variety of types of materials for them to choose. The most useful, the bamboo tubes, is the most plentiful. Semisocial and solitary bees will choose these first.
The construction is really good. It is made of real wood and well-constructed. The butterfly part has a hinged door that’s easy to unlatch and open to replace its materials. It has hangers built into the back so you can easily mount this on a wall. We chose to just set it on the top of a stone wall protected from rain and wind, and it’s nice and stable sitting like that.
My one minor complaint is that some (5 or 6) of the bottom row of shingles on the roof were cracked. It looked like this was a result of being placed in the manufacturer’s box.
Overall, for $35, this is a nice, large, and fun addition to your yard, and helps the pollinator bees, especially in urban areas like mine. A good value for the money.
I absolutely love this insect hotel! It’s so cute and much bigger than I expected. It comes with plenty of bamboo tubes, pine cones, and wood shavings. I really like that there are several different sections and environments for a variety of insects to make their home.
I was a little disappointed with the packaging, as the edges of the roof broke off during shipping. Since this will be outdoors and naturally weather over time, it wasn’t a major issue for me, but better packaging would definitely help prevent damage during transit.
There are a couple of things I would improve. I wish it came with a more secure or convenient way to hang it, and I would also like an easier way to remove the metal wiring when it’s time to replace or refresh the pine cones and wood shavings.
Despite those minor issues, I’m very happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend it. It’s a charming addition to any garden, and I love that it provides shelter for beneficial insects and pollinators while helping support a healthy garden ecosystem. It’s both decorative and functional!
Love the concep
My mother took me to a public garden off of a biking trail in Northern Michigan, and we took a lovely walk next to a river. It ended in a fantastic garden that was abuzz with multiple pollinator that were using a large scale version of these insect houses. I had never seen such a thing before and was intrigued. So when I had an opportunity to review this item for Amazon Vine, of course I jumped at the opportunity. This insect house is just like the ones I saw in use at the public garden. And the insects really were putting it to good use. We have a garden at the back of our property and lots of nature in our area. I was going to put it near the garden, but figured it was probably not a good idea to put it where my husband would be picking vegetables so I put it towards the fence. Hopefully the bugs will find it! Super excited to find this product.
A Fun and Helpful Addition to the Backyard!
I’ve come across the idea of an insect hotel here and there on social media and was actually about to build my own out of some scrap wood when I stumbled across this particular design on Amazon. I decided to skip the DIY project and give this one a try instead.
The hotel is definitely fun-sized. While the listing describes it as “large,” it measures only about a square foot in length, so keep that in mind if you’re expecting something larger.
The different, small compartments give this hotel a fun aesthetic while providing different compartments for your outdoor critters to use and call home.
Set up was incredibly simple as you just use two screws/nails to mount the insect hotel to the backing of your choice. In the few weeks since installation, I have not seen too many insects land, but I have noticed some signs of activity, including shavings and other small debris left behind by outdoor critters. Also, I have noticed more bees in our backyard since installation, which has been quite nice. One even made its way into our house, so I suppose you could say the hotel is doing its job a little too well!
At the time of this review, the insect hotel is priced at $36, which feels a little steep to me. It’s a fun, well-made piece, but similar insect hotels can be found for around half to two-thirds of the current price.
