Nice lighting option; no hanging lights
Have other Govee products so thought I would give the projector a chance to avoid hanging lights outside the home. Been up for a couple of days and not bad .. agree with other comments that not so bright so have them closer to the house to compensate. We will see how it fairs over winter but so far it’s good. Got it on sale so that was a bonus.
It’s a heavy duty projector with tons of customization options in the app. You can get creative with the color and lighting to suit your needs. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because the shimmer lights aren’t very bright. I had initially installed this in a tree facing down on my yard to fill a void in my Christmas lights. Unfortunately the shimmer effect wasn’t visible at all against turf so I relocated it to point at my garage door. The laser effects are amazing and really burn into your vision, but again the shimmer effects are almost non-existant, even on a white background. So basically it’s a $100 laser show which is a bit much considering there are cheaper options out there.
Very cool device. Wanted to dive in and learn how to operate it fully, but it was just too dim at our current location (lots of bright lights from neighbors). Returned, maybe will be buying again when we move!
Its just awesome
No more hanging christmas lights. Or storing them. Or replacing them. No more untangling them! No more pretty lights just on Christmas. Thus stays up all year. For st Patty’s day, valentines day, birthdays…its awesome.
This is a really nifty device! I can leave it in the yard year round to decorate at night or just because. It is larger than you would think for something like this but is feature packed for sure. I just have to work out a “shelter” for it to make it easy to cut around but this device is weather-resistant for sure. We are experiencing weather from Hurricane Melissa in North GA and it has held up with strong winds and hard rain. It is easy to use with the Govee app and installs in the yard in minutes. There are plenty of functions within the app to make the decorations your own, or grab some from help from the built-in AI. (I just don’t personally use it.)
If you have Home Assistant and use MQTT, add the GoveeToMQTT add-on and then turn on “local LAN” in the options for this and other Govee lights. You can’t edit the scenes but you can at least control the power and brightness.
I have a son who is obsessed with the Northern Lights. I already bought the Govee aurora light for his bedroom, but when I saw these, I thought they’d be a nice upgrade from my 10 year old “As Seen on TV” Star Shower projectors. Turns out they do the same thing that my old school Star Shower projectors do and then some.
The build quality is fantastic. They’re pretty heavy metal projectors and don’t feel flimsy at all. I used the ground stakes, so I didn’t have to mess with the screws for the plates (one of the reasons people tend to downvote them). The ground stakes do have a screw that goes in the side, but that was easy enough.
I put them up about 3 weeks before Thanksgiving. My son was going to a piano lesson and I wanted to surprise him with an aurora on the house when he got home. We have a 5200 sqft house, so I bought two (I had 2 Star Showers). That gave me the flexibility to get full coverage of the house while getting them close enough to the house that the more challenging colors like reds and purples actually showed up. We have a streetlight across the street from our house, so I was concerned that if they were further back they’d be really washed out.
I dialed in some blues, greens, purples, and a little red and it looked pretty great. The red definitely didn’t show up as well as the blues and greens. I could literally hear my son outside when he saw it though. He absolutely loved it. 🙂
Now that we’re getting closer to the Christmas season, I’ve experimented with the Christmas settings. The designs that float around display brightly and crisply. I need to experiment a little more with colors, but the Govee app is pretty intuitive. The AI feature cracks me up because it’s either really good or absolutely horrendous–there doesn’t seem to be any middle ground.
Overall, I say at the sale price, these are worth the money. I do wish you could chain multiple devices together with the same color scheme like you can with the more expensive Philips Hue ecosystem, but I knew that that wasn’t an option when I bought these, so it’s not that big of a deal.
I like these. I may keep them up year round to annoy my HOA because they’re so versatile!
