I bought this as a small secondary machine that I was hoping I might be able to run one particular game that has issues on my main system. I love tiny machines and normally buy refurbished Lenovo Tiny systems but I already know their graphics would not be remotely up to the task. So, I took a shot and purchased this one after reading loads of the reviews. For reference the game I wanted to run is 7 Days to Die.
Well, the setup took no time at all. Windows 11 was activated, I ran updates and finally downloaded the game. The networking was great (ethernet) and the game downloaded in record time (speedtest is showing 980 on my gig connection). Now to see if it works. Is it up to my main gaming system? No but the other system has an RTX 2060 so the graphics comparison isn’t truly fair. Running with everything set to high it runs a dismal 12 fps. I turned down a number of the high impact settings and got ti up to 26 fps which is surprising playable. So, is it a great gaming system? Probably not, but does it do what I needed it for? Absolutely.
I would say if you are looking for low end gaming it might work well for you. If you are looking for a relatively inexpensive, but very nice general use system this is great. I have no idea what the life span will be for it as I’ve only had it about 1 month but so far I am pretty happy with the purchase. Now if you will excuse me I am off to kill some zombies.
Excellent Customer Support; Do not be mislead by the word "Mini"
This is the review I posted on Amazon: My big desktop was done and it was time to buy a new computer. Because I travel between the Home and the Cottage I needed something smaller. A laptop was out of the question (too expensive and too limited). I bought this mini computer. 6 month later I can say this was a very good decision. This PowerHouse replaced my big desktop and is even better. I am a software developer and need to run “have duty” software, such as Visual Studio or Android Studio. I installed Ubuntu and I run Windows professional in Virtual Box. With a good CPU and 32Gb Ram I can run all this at the same time and never see any issues. This is the best machine I have used. At some point the fan became a bit noisy. The customer service arranged for a new fan. Replacing was easy – just 4 screws and the new fan was in place. If you think “Mini” is a toy – don’t. This is a serious computer – ready for serious tasks. Not a toy at all.
Powerful Workstatio
After using this machine for around 3 weeks, I can say it performed solidly for a big majority of tasks.
It comes with:
-AMD Ryzen 9 Pro 6950H 8 cores 16 threads, up to 4,90GHz.
-Integrated graphics, radeon 680m 2400MHz
-32GB DDR5 dual channel ram @4800MHz
-1TB PCIe 3.0 M.2 NVME
-Intel I226V DUAL LAN 2500Mbps + WiFi 6 (2.4GHz/5.0GHz), Bluetooth 5.2
-Quad Display Output, HDMI 2.1 (8K@60Hz), DP (4K@144Hz), USB4 (Type-C)*2
-Dual M.2 SSD 2280 PCIE4.0*4 Slots. MAX 4TB
-Oculink Port
This has everything you need in a mini PC in terms of technology, expansion and ports
Performance Wise, I did some CPU and GPU benchmarking to check how it handles harder tasks!
*Everything was tested on Balanced mode in BIOS*
Cinebench Single core : 90pts
Cinebench multi-core : 681pts
Geekbench single core : 1879pts
Geekbench multi-core : 9750pts
Geekbench GPU (Vulkan): 30705pts
Userbenchmark Normal use : 195pts
Userbenchmark Heavy use : 901pts
Userbenchmark Server use : 1441pts
Userbenchmark GPU DX9 : 58.9fps
Userbenchmark GPU DX10: 32.7fps
After testing that, I could see that the CPU is the star of this machine, making it perfect for heavy workflow, server use etc.
Even tho I know the GPU is not the best, I still performed tests in a couple of games to check. Obviously, with the integrated graphics, you can’t expect to be running games at High settings. *everything was tested at 1080p*
CS2 High settings:
AVG: 60fps
Highest: 78fps
CS2 Low settings with FSR:
AVG: 85fps
Highest: 100fps
Valorant low settings:
AVG: 180fps
Highest: 210fps
Valorant High settings:
AVG: 160fps
Highest: 200fps
Definitely not bad! I also tested emulator games such as Wii, Wii-u, switch and PS2 and it was running every game smoothly. The best way to fully enjoy this pc is with the Oculink port. Plug in your own GPU and you can run any game without a problem.
In terms of CPU temps, lowest was 52c and highest was 82c while on full load. On full load, I gotta say the fan has gotten pretty loud. The rest of the system ran pretty cool, staying around 40-50c.
Finally, pros and cons
PROS:
-Great aesthetic
-Quality materials used
-Upgradeable (Dual M.2 slots 4TB max and 96GB of ram max)
-Versatile (4 display outputs, dual LAN ports, Oculink port)
-Great performance
-Windows 11 pro pre-installed and activated
CONS:
-Noisy fan when in load
-Integrated graphics
-A bit pricey
To sum up, if we’re not talking about gaming, this mini pc can handle absolutely anything from office work, video editing, Entertainment, emulation, router, anything. What I love the most about it is that you can transform it in whatever you want, it could be a router, a powerful gaming server, a NAS, an office computer, gaming pc (with oculink), you get the point. I would say this is worth it if you are looking for a compact, powerful and versatile machine!
When I saw GMK had a new design coming with better cooling and oculink i was looking forward to getting it. After getting it i wasnt disappointed. The 680m did quiet well in the games i play. Minecraft ATM10 i saw a constant 130fps. With shaders turned on it dropped to about 30 but it was still very playable. Horizon zero dawn the benchmark set to original quality it got 37 fps. Far cry 5 it got 41 FPS. So over all i am very happy with how this little guy is doing. Benchmark wise geekbench 4-single 6823, multi 37902, open cl 94624, gb5- single 1631, multi 9623, opencl 34079, GB6- single 2034, multi 10181. GB AI ONNX – Single percision 2860, Half 1413, quantized 3077. DirectML – Single 6079, Half 8527, quantized 4240
I bought a cheap oculink dock now i wish i bought a better one just to have a cleaner setup. I put in a rx580 to do some testing and it worked like a charm. I didnt have to do anything just turn on the computer with everything plugged in and powered. I also tested an ssd and 10gb networking and works like a charm. With the 10gb network i was seeing about 7ish Gigabits per second in transfers. Yea its not full speed for the card but that is pretty much full speed for a 4×4 pcie. so cant fault the computer for that.
I do like the design of the computer i wish the top fan had a filter of some kind but it is easy to open and clean if needed. Overall the fans are very quiet and the the system runs nicely. This computer is pretty good all around little computer for someone wanting small, quiet and capable with the ability to expand it over oculink. also if you have a powerful enough usb c dock you can do one cable operation with this. sadly my dock doesnt put out enough power for one cable operation so i run 2 cables.
TL;DR – Good performance, quiet fans, can play some games. usb 4 with power in support. Video shows the computer under full load and how quiet the fans are. I would recommend this computer to friends needing something for video editing and light gaming.
Purchased as a Linux media PC and NAS.
Running Debian. I have not been able to get WiFi 6E to work with 6ghz signal. On 5ghz, wifi works pretty well with good speed. However the WiFi card’s temperature can quickly skyrocket to absurdly high destructive temperatures. If you max out the WiFi link such as during a local speed test, I’ve seen the temperature quickly climb above 105 C before I chickened out and stopped the speed test.
Otherwise the system is most impressive in that it can run cool especially in its low power mode set via EUFI.
There’s a secondary fan on top. It’s quite noisy. Runs all the time and does very little to cool the device. Monitoring temperatures, the fan does not significantly help cool the WiFi adapter. SSD doesn’t seem to heat up much even without the fan. This MiniPC had been sold earlier without the top fan. Not sure why they felt the need to add one. I had earlier tried the GMKTec G3 minipc. Its SSD did get extremely hot and it doesn’t have a fan, no heatsink, and the SSD is in a sealed top area without ventilation. Maybe they’re overcompensating in this minipc or maybe it depends on the specific brand SSD included.
As a media PC, the GPU is plenty fast to play 4k60 video stream even on low power mode. Meets my use case.
It’s also ideal for my use case as a NAS to have the two 2.5gbs ethernet ports. Pretty easy to set up bridging in Debian between the two ports. Can get amazing speeds to/from the NAS over 2.5gb ethernet.
Overall, good system, good value when promotion or coupon is in place.
Good performance and speed
Have been using this for over a couple of weeks. Really good performance and no issues so far. I use it mainly for trading (connected to multiple screens), spreadsheets and admin stuff. It doesn’t have inbuilt speakers though, so you will have to buy that separately
The GMKTec NucBox M5 (in Pastel Green) is an incredible computer. This is my first desktop with an AMD processor. The AMD Ryzen 7 5700U is very fast and powerful. I needed a space-saving PC and this is just the right size. The port selection is perfect for my needs (with 1 USB-C and 2×3.2 USBs on the front panel). I can even connect older devices to the rear panel with the 2×2.0 USB ports. The system is very versatile. It handles large files and databases easily, even with a lot of browser tabs open while playing YouTube videos or listening to music. No matter what I’m doing, the performance is amazing. I even run Fedora Linux alongside Windows 11 with no issues at all. The price of this computer is great, but even better with the coupon discount. I will be enjoying this computer for many years to come.
Really great, but with one quirk
Honestly when these go on sale these are great.
More than enough for most people in terms of specs, night and day difference from our old one.
While the claim these are gaming PCs (a lot of mini PCs claim this) they can certainly play a lot of stuff but if you or your kids wanna play the new and big releases it doesn’t do well…..so the kids say. My husband is going to try using an external graphics card set up via the oculink connection but I can’t comment on that cause he hasn’t done it yet and we’ll I don’t know anything about that stuff.
The quirk is that the set up wasn’t easy, which I thought was weird (thought would be good out the box) we ended up dropping it off at a computer store to get all the updates and such installed correctly. I wish I could go into more detail (don’t really understand) but the salesman said it was more work than usual and not what they would usually do (bought a new monitor from a box store and they were kind enough to help us).
The size and speed of this though once we got it going is awesome for our work stuff and the kids can do there thing on it as well. Takes up sssssssoooooooo little room on the desk making it really a great option for tight areas or just limiting the clutter.
Wish I could be more descriptive on the setup/startup but once figured out a great computer with a small footpri
You're getting a steak while paying for ground chuck. This is a fancy PC!
This is a neat little PC. I don’t play many games on PC, I prefer console. However, I got this strictly for Sims and general use! It is cost effective and great quality. Especially if you’re a person who only plays a few games. However, I believe if you truly wanted you could max this thing out with games. It’s fast, effective and reliable. It hasn’t let me down yet! I use a cooling fan when I game on it and I haven’t had an issue with overheating. I’ll update y’all if anything goes wrong cause you never know. But so far this is fabulous. It’s small so it fits in small spaces, which is what I needed.
