Product description
I’m a huge fan of Getorli’s mini PC line as they offer some of the best computing value possible today in a very rough high priced memory market. Like many of their offerings, this flavor of the GT101 comes with real RAM in the form of replaceable/upgradeable DDR4, and a 512GB SSD that generally performs at 2000mb/s. This one is a lower end model with a Ryzen 5 3500U, and sells for around $250. You’d think you can’t go wrong with value for any of their models – but there’s small differences in their configuration such that if you pick one model vs another it may open up an entire other possibility of expansion, or spending a bit more gets you ACTUAL GAMING rather than almost gaming. For that reason I feel that this particular model has some quirks that work for less use cases than others in general but it may have some things that make it preferable depending on your specific situation. Cutting to the chase, this mini PC does have the ability to add an SSD but it is a *2242* slot. This is an uncommon form factor and less popular than the full size 2280 or smallest possible 2230. It does not have an alternate screw position for 2230, though you can use an extender for that size – but standard 2280 is out of the question. My other low-end Getorli has SATA instead of a second NVME port but I have a lot of SATA SSD’s I could use for it while I have no 2242’s and I need the expensive 2230’s for Steam Decks and form factors that can’t take anything bigger. 2230 and 2242 drives are way more pricey than 2280’s even in this crazy high price economy so this is a pretty big consideration as your future upgrade cost may actually cost more than if you got the $350 tier Getorli which would get you a real second 2280 slot AND a faster CPU and actual gaming capability. The other consideration is that this model has 2 USB-C ports and most Getorli models including higher end ones usually still only have one so if having 2 USB-C’s is important to you, this one might be your choice! Finishing the discussion on gaming capability, as a low end machine, this one even struggles somewhat with heavy 2D games, and it really can’t handle modern 3D. I try to run Helldivers 2 on it and while I would think its neat that it starts running at 14fps on low settings, it actually crashes on starting a mission and cannot be played properly in the end. For other general computing tasks this machine is still fantastic for the price. However I think the gains you get if you spend a little more for an AMD 6600 Getorli can’t be ignored and should be worth considering unless you really need 2 USB-C ports or for some reason you’ve got a stack of 2242’s in your drawer. This model comes with Windows 11 PRO 24H2 pre-installed. As 24H2 supposedly has the AI stuff in it, that’s a no fly zone for me so I put Windows 10 on it instead and I’m happy to to report that it does indeed work on this machine. Downloading the drivers on the Getorli website that are marked Windows 11, they all still work on Windows 10 22H2. If you’re looking for a good mini PC, you’ve got the right brand in mind here, but take a look at the ports and expandability to see which one might make the most sense for you specifically!
Evaluating older silicon for basic administrative use usually comes down to power efficiency, and this micro desktop handles the basics exceptionally well. The Ryzen 5 3500U is an older 4-core, 8-thread processor, but it still provides plenty of raw speed for standard word processing and database management. Because the chip operates on a low 15W thermal envelope, the internal cooling fan rarely needs to ramp up. It stays incredibly quiet even during heavy file transfers. Paired with the built-in 512GB NVMe drive, cold boots take just seconds and everyday applications load without any frustrating delays.
The physical port layout is highly practical for a multi-monitor home office setup. You get two native HDMI 2.0 outputs right on the back, making it simple to drive dual 4K displays at a smooth 60Hz without having to buy any active display adapters. The network hardware is also surprisingly current for a budget-tier machine. Having WiFi 6 on board ensures a much more stable connection to the local router than older generation wireless cards, and the inclusion of a full-featured Type-C port gives you a reliable connection point for modern external storage drives or docking stations.
The primary performance boundary you have to keep in mind is the memory architecture. The system includes 16GB of DDR4 RAM, which is perfectly fine for normal daily tasks, media streaming, and standard productivity. However, this specific chipset caps the memory speed at a maximum of 2400MHz. If you are the type of user who routinely leaves a hundred memory-heavy Chrome tabs open simultaneously while trying to run other background applications, you will absolutely hit a memory bottleneck and start noticing visual stuttering. As long as you keep your active workflow reasonably organized, it is a highly reliable, cost-effective daily driver.
I’m very familiar with various mini-PC’s. It seems an okay value for the price, it’s easy to use, and matches the product description. The 3550U is now a six and a half year-old CPU, but with it’s Vega 8 APU, it can still handle 2D gaming at 720P or even 1080P, but don’t expect miracles. It comes with a good amount of ports for connectivity, and I’ve had no issues with functionality, except for the Wi-Fi adapter’s Bluetooth, where it wouldn’t connect to any of my Bluetooth items (mouse, keyboard, earbuds, and game controllers). The storage capacity on mine is 512GB, along with 16GB memory with a single DDR4 module, which is enough for me. While it’s not a fast NVMe SSD, it’s been reliable. It works well with streaming and watching videos, and doing some productivity work with spreadsheets and multiple tabs on the browser. Just know it’s not going to be fast by today’s standards, but it is space saving and power efficient. It’s not very flashy, either, but it looks good enough, I guess. It has a TDP of 15W, and power consumption is good enough where I could run this in my car using a small inverter. As far as ease of setup, it has Windows 11 pre-installed. There’s no HDR, but I do get 4K at 60Hz. It stays pretty cool, and I do hear the fan come on at times, but it’s typically pretty quiet.
