The perfect hands-free setup for detailed inspections
This magnifying lamp is an absolute game-changer for close-up inspection. I use it constantly for evaluating and pre-grading my Pokmon and Magic: The Gathering cards. The large 5-inch 10X lens is perfect for checking overall surface condition, while the 30X built-in magnifier lets me zero in on microscopic edge wear. It is also incredible for examining raw gemstones and uncut crystals—the hands-free gooseneck stays exactly where I put it without sagging, letting me work with both hands. I love that the heavy base doubles as a small tray to hold my other tools, and having the silicone control buttons right on the lamp head instead of down on the cord is incredibly convenient. Highly recommend!
Good lighted magnifier, but magnification is off.
Worth noting:
– The base is heavy enough and large enough to provide good balance and support for the magnifier.
– The base is covered with a felt material which allows for easy repositioning and rotation.
– There are no instructions included with the unit on how to assemble it.
– The metal arm is very stiff. It takes quite a bit of handling to loosen it up so that it’s easier to move around. It maintains its position quite well as a result and also makes it difficult to rotate the lens. The lens is fixed to the arm, which mean it doesn’t rotate on its own independently, but rather when you rotate the lens, it rotates the entire arm. You need to crack the arm a bit to loosen it up in order for the rotation to be usable. Initially it was very difficult to rotate. It’s still difficult to position and tilt.
– When I first tried the magnifying lens, it didn’t feel like it was a 5x magnifying lens. I was in a seated position and had the lens in front of me at eye level. The focal distance of the lens is about 6-8″ away from the lens, putting it further back will start to distort the image. As I stood up, I realized the magnification increased. I repositioned myself such that my head was about 6″ away and the paper was about 6″ away from the lens. As I moved my head back, the image got bigger. Oh wow, this thing can magnify up to 5x, but my arm length isn’t long enough! In fact, your arm will probably need to be around 20′ long. I tried it at 10′ away and I only got about 2.5x magnification. Not a practical distance at all. At arms length, magnification is about 1.25x.
– The smaller magnifier built into the lens has a focal distance of about 1.5″.
– The lens quality is good, nice and clear and smooth, however any light behind you will be reflected in the lens. This is normal.
– The light output is very good, going from very dim so as not to wash out the image, to incredibly bright. There are 5 color temperatures to choose from.
– The included power adapter is ETL certified.
Overall, it works, and it’s why I went for the 5.25x version knowing it probably wouldn’t give me 5.25x magnification. I am curious though if the lower magnifications are worse or more realistic. At arms length, it provides good enough magnification for me to read things easily, and it’s better than holding a magnifying lens. It makes things with tiny fonts large enough to easily read, so that’s all that really matters to me. 5x magnification would probably be way too large.
