    Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersAbout as fast as a 2.5-inch hard drive gets - 7200 RPM, 103 MB/s measured
    I hadn’t bought a spinning drive in over a decade, but with SSD prices where they are, this was cheap enough to be worth a try. I needed something portable to hand a friend media files for his Plex server. It does that job very well.

    WHAT’S INSIDE (pulled with HWiNFO and CrystalDiskInfo)

    * Seagate ST9500423AS (Momentus 7200.4), 2.5-inch, 16 MB cache

    * 7200 RPM, not the 5400 RPM in most portable drives

    * CMR, not SMR, so no write-speed cliff on large transfers

    * Realtek USB-to-SATA bridge with UASP support

    * Enclosure is 10 Gbps capable, negotiated 5 Gbps on my rear USB 3.2 port

    * 466 GB usable, normal for a “500 GB” drive

    * Health on arrival: 0 power-on hours, zero reallocated or pending sectors, zero interface errors. Factory fresh.

    MEASURED (a real file copy logged at one-second intervals, not a synthetic benchmark)

    * 104 GB in 16 minutes 51 seconds

    * Average 103 MB/s, peak 119 MB/s

    * 109 MB/s at the start, 102 MB/s at the end

    That gentle decline is normal: outer tracks hold more data per rotation than inner ones, so speed falls as the drive fills. My copy used the first 20 percent of the disk. Fill it completely and the last stretch will land closer to 50-60 MB/s. Physics, not a defect. For Plex streaming none of it matters, since video needs a fraction of this bandwidth.

    BUILD AND HEAT

    The aluminum case really helps here: the drive went from 38C to 46C over 17 minutes of continuous writing, then held steady instead of climbing. Warm, never hot. A plastic enclosure would not have leveled off. It also feels genuinely good in the hand: real metal, nice weight, well balanced.

    WORTH KNOWING

    The Momentus 7200.4 is an older Seagate design. Mine arrived unused and performs at the top of what 2.5-inch mechanical drives ever managed, but the manufacturer warranty on a drive this vintage is long expired, so you are relying on seller coverage. And it is mechanical: soft seek noise, dislikes being bumped while running, random access nothing like an SSD.

    BOTTOM LINE

    Five stars for exactly what it is. For moving large files, archiving, or handing media to someone, it does what it claims at a price SSDs cannot touch right now. The 7200 RPM spindle and the aluminum case are both better than I expected.

    Golden Review Award: 1 From Our UsersGood Budget Storage Drive for Backups and Media
    This external hard drive does exactly what I expected from a traditional HDD. One thing that may not be immediately obvious from the listing is that this is a mechanical hard drive rather than an SSD. That means it contains moving parts and should be handled a little more carefully during use. I would not recommend carrying it around while it is actively reading or writing data since mechanical drives are more sensitive to bumps and movement.

    Performance is about what I would expect from a budget focused external HDD. In my testing I saw sequential read and write speeds around 140 MB/s under good conditions. That is perfectly fine for storing media files backups photos videos and other large files. Where drives like this tend to struggle is with lots of small random file transfers since mechanical drives are naturally slower than SSDs in those situations.

    For me this makes the most sense as a secondary storage device rather than a primary working drive. It works well for holding backups archiving files or storing games that you are not actively playing. The capacity is useful and the USB 3.0 connection helps it get the most out of the hardware.

    The biggest thing to keep in mind is managing expectations. If you are coming from an SSD this will feel noticeably slower. That is simply the nature of mechanical hard drives. As long as you are looking for affordable storage rather than maximum speed this drive performs well and serves its purpose nicely.

    Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersMechanical hd
    I got this mechanical hard drive for permeant storage of personal files. I did not consider ssd due to possibility of data loss without being connected for long time. This hd works well, gets connected to my laptop easily without any setup. The data transfer speed is decent at a high capacity.

    Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersGood price, good quality, and exact 500GB!
    At first I thought it’s a broken or fake one, because it shows the capacity is only 100.8mb. I thought I was cheated by the seller, but I figured it out later, and it successfully has 500GB as the description says. I like the tough feeling of this HD, and black looks professional. Good price, good quality, hope it works well for years. Finger crossed.

    Golden Review Award: 1 From Our UsersGreat portable external storage
    For those looking for a small external drive for file storage only, this is a great choice at an affordable price.

    Included in the packaging is the drive itself, which is extremely solid and sturdy with a hefty metal shell, a 1 ft usb a to c cable, with an adapter to for usb a to c. The cable and the device run at usb 3 speeds. There is just a single small led on the side of the drive to show that it is working.

    Out of the box, the drive is formatted in exFAT format, you’ll probably want to format it into another format more suitable for your use case. There is 465 GB of usable space after formatting.

    Operation could not be simpler as this is a portable drive without a need for an external power supply. There is a single USB port, and you simply plug the cable into the device, and the other end to a computer. That’s it.

    What surprised me more here is the fact that this is also compatible with an iphone. I didn’t think the Iphone port would be able to power the device, but it does and shows up as a drive.

    Running this through benchmarks, you get the advertised 100 ish mbps sequential speeds. As you can see from the results, the random read/write speeds are on the slower side as this is a traditional spinning disk rather than an ssd. So if you are looking for a drive for performance, I’d skip these. If you want to use the drive as a storage solution for large files, this is definitely not a bad choice.

    While bare drives can be had for slightly cheaper than this, the solid enclosure and the included cables, along with a great 3 year warranty make this a very compelling value.

    Highly recommended.
