Saved My Battery in the Southwest Heat!
Update: after leaving this on the dash in my car, it warped the case and caused it to seperate. While I do so like the product, be cautious of where you place it.
——————-
I have an older car that doesn’t get driven very often, and after getting another vehicle, it now sits outside in the harsh Southwest sun—which absolutely destroys car batteries when they sit idle. Even though the battery itself isn’t very old, if I went more than two weeks without driving the car, it would dead-stop and need a jump start.
I was originally looking at running an extension cord for a traditional plug-in trickle charger until I came across this solar-powered option and decided to give it a shot. So far, I’ve been extremely impressed! The overall construction feels durable, and it comes thoughtfully equipped with both a 12V cigarette lighter plug and traditional alligator clamps if you need to connect directly to the battery under the hood. The quick-connect plug stays firm and secure, making it effortless to swap between the two setup options depending on what your vehicle needs.
Since my front cigarette lighter/12V port is “always on” (hot even when the car is off), I just plug the solar panel directly into that and set the panel on the front dashboard inside the windshield. Every single time I’ve gone out to drive the car since installing it, it has fired right up without an issue. Given how much Southwest sunlight this panel gets, it has no problem keeping the battery fully topped off.
I absolutely love that I don’t have to deal with running extension cords across the driveway, and the convenience of the 12V port setup is a huge plus. This has been a completely hassle-free, reliable solution for keeping my battery charged. If you live somewhere with good sunlight and have a car that sits, I highly recommend picking one of these up!
Easy to use, maintains a sitting battery.
This worked in maintaining the battery in a second vehicle that I drive less often. Before I’d have to recharge the battery if I skipped a weekly startup.
I’ve seen larger tenders but not sure if I need a larger panel fur a battery tender.
I considered a battery disconnect switch but this worked better for me.
It will in time fully charge smaller lithium batteries that I use. The MPPT is built into the panel for convenience. It comes with a 12v DC plug and clamps to apply to the battery directly. The vehicle doesn’t charge by the DC outlet as it’s not on while vehicle is off so I connected to the battery posts. It’s output is ~14.4v.
It has suction cups that can be applied so you can put it on window. I’ve had a previous tender with similar cups that may release in hot weather or over time so haven’t used these.
The price is moderate, not cheaper or more expensive relative to most similar tenders.
Reliable solar maintainer that keeps my battery topped off
I purchased the TOPRAY Solar 10W 12V Solar Battery Trickle Charger & Battery Maintainer to keep my car battery healthy during longer periods of sitting. The compact panel features a built-in MPPT controller, multiple safety protections, and a waterproof design suitable for cars, boats, RVs, motorcycles, and similar 12V systems. It comes with alligator clips, a cigarette lighter adapter, SAE connector, and suction cups for flexible mounting.
Setup was straightforward. I attached the suction cups to the windshield, connected the clips to the battery terminals, and the indicator lights confirmed it was working under sunlight. Over the past few weeks it has steadily maintained the charge without any overcharging issues, which is exactly what I needed for a vehicle that sits unused for days at a time. The panel feels solid and the cables are long enough for practical placement.
The waterproof rating and built-in protections give me peace of mind leaving it connected outdoors. This has become a simple, effective solution for battery maintenance. Highly recommend it for anyone wanting a dependable solar trickle charger.
Need some juice during the day , this can help.
Great little solar charger so far it’s been keeping my car topped off and no worries of it not starting when I need it to run. The charger it self seems to be built pretty sturdy and looks rugged . The suction cups included give you the option have the panel stuck on the glass and charging while you are away the kit includes the panel, suction cups, cigarette lighter plug, and alligator clips for battery. The charger has colored leds that show status. I’ve had this out and charging for over a week and the battery in the car is fine and the building in charger controller keeps this panel from over charging the battery. If you decide to wire this up directly to the battery just pay attention to the positive and negative.
Extra Peace of Mind for Vehicles That Sit or Have Temperamental Batteries
This is one of those little devices that’s worth having simply for the extra peace of mind. I’ve had vehicle batteries unexpectedly go dead before, and when you’re somewhere remote, that’s not exactly the surprise you want waiting for you.
The main reason I got this 10W solar charger is to help maintain my 12V battery when the vehicle is sitting. I already carry one of those portable jump-start packs, but those eventually need charging themselves. A solar maintainer gives me another option that doesn’t depend on finding a wall outlet.
The panel is compact enough to keep in the vehicle, it’s waterproof, and having the built-in controller means it’s designed specifically around maintaining a 12V battery from solar power. Connect it properly, give the panel good sunlight, and it can provide a small maintenance charge.
One important thing buyers should understand, though: this is a 10W trickle charger/maintainer, not a solar jump starter. If your battery is completely dead, don’t expect to connect this and be driving again five minutes later. Its real strength is maintaining a battery and slowly adding charge over time. I’ll still be keeping my jump pack in the vehicle for emergencies.
That’s actually why I like having both. The jump pack is there when I need immediate help, while this solar panel gives me a way to maintain or slowly recharge a battery using nothing but daylight.
Overall: This is a clever piece of emergency and maintenance equipment to keep around, especially for cars, boats, RVs, trailers, motorcycles, or anything that may sit unused for periods of time. It’s compact, requires no AC outlet, and gives me another layer of backup when dealing with battery problems. For me, that extra peace of mind alone makes it worthwhile.
Nice solar charger! Good size vs. power tradeoff.
This is a really nice 10W, 12V solar panel. It’s a little bigger than I had expected (that’s what I get for not looking at all the pictures and making note of the dimensions), but it still works for my need. Good size vs. power tradeoff. The panel itself was packaged nicely and came with both a set of battery clamps and a cigarette lighter power plug. One note on the cigarette lighter plug – many of these ports are not active with the ignition off on a car, so just be aware that you may need to hook directly to the battery using the provided clamps in order to see a charge. They also provide four suction cups that you can use to attach to a smooth surface, or you can rig just about any other hanging method to the holes on each corner.
The panel provided right at 23V in direct, mid-day sunlight (open circuit, no load), which is right in line with what one would expect. Nice little charger!
