Great idea, look great, well made, and very substantial
These wire shelf covers are a great idea. Wire shelves are quick to put in, but I’ve never really liked them because you can’t put small or irregularly shaped items on the shelves without them falling over or through the wires. Unfortunately our house came with them installed in one of the closets. Rather than go through the trouble and expense of taking them out, these shelf covers offer a quick, attractive alternative. The bamboo shelving is actually surprisingly robust at ” thick, unlike those thin pieces of plastic some sell as an alternative, and they even have that nice bamboo wood smell. Each shelf cover weighs 4lb 14oz for the 24″ x 12″ shelves. Those dimensions are spot on, too. That is exactly what I measured to less than 1/16″ difference, much to my chagrin since my shelves are non-standard lengths and I had to trim ” off the sides. Since this is nice solid wood you can actually do that though. Keep in mind that you do lose ” in height above the shelf due to the wood, plus the front overhang ends up hanging slightly lower than the front overhang of the wire shelf itself. Shouldn’t normally be a problem unless your shelf height is very limited.
Assembly of the front lip to the horizontal board is supposed to take seconds due to their quick-connect fittings, although I found that at first the front edge had a lot of wobble after assembly. Turns out that all of the screws in the front edges needed a little tightening first. It was then very tight in the channel and in fact I used a rubber mallet to finish setting them. I could have loosened the screws a little, but I liked it being nice and tight. Despite having to mess around with the screws, I’m overall pretty happy with them and plan on buying more to finish the closet. It is much easier sliding items on and off the shelf now, and nothing tips or falls through. If you have a lot of shelves to cover the cost does add up, but they are still cheaper than fully replacing the wire shelves, and they look great.
