A few years ago, I used a timer like this to keep my elephant ears regularly watered. I’m quite forgetful, and these plants show a huge difference in appearance based on their care. If you neglect watering and weeding, they stay small. But with regular watering and good mulch, they grow MASSIVE. The year I used the timer, the leaves grew nearly 4 feet long and 3 feet wide. Unfortunately, I forgot and left the timer outside that winter, and the cold weather destroyed the timer. The following year, without the timer, the elephant ears didn’t reach half their previous size because we kept forgetting to water them.
I recently got this new sprinkler timer, and it’s fantastic. The controls are super simple, and it’s very easy to use. It’s compact and built to last. I love how straightforward it is—no complicated buttons, just what I need. The manual control option is great for quick adjustments. Overall, this timer will make watering my elephant ears hassle-free. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for an easy and dependable solution. I can’t wait to use this timer again this spring!
I have a lot of plants, some can go days without water but there are a few that need to be watered daily in the summer. Recently, I had to be away from home to take care of an elderly relative 500 miles away. I needed something to help me keep my plants alive. When I saw this timer available as a free promotional I ordered it. It took me awhile to figure it out but once it was, I put a splitter on the faucet and attached the timer to a hose that went to a small swimming pool. I put the high water plants inside the pool on bricks so they don’t stay in standing water all the time. I put some of the other plants on cinder blocks around the outside of the pool and attached wicking string from the plant to the pool. Once the timer was set, I timed how long it took for the water to reach the top of the bricks and that’s the time I put on the timer. This will keep the pool with at least enough water for the plants on the bricks while maintaining the plants on the cinder blocks through the wicks. I watched it for a few days to make sure it worked before I left town. When I got back, everything was at least still alive. I’ll have to work the kinks out to get it right but at least I know I can leave for up to a week with no dead plants. I knocked off one star because it was hard to figure out the timer even with the directions.
I love this water controller. It does everything. My old controller did and much more. Amongst all the other features, one of the most important is the fact that when the batteries are low or die, this controller automatically shuts off the water so that the water doesn’t run without power. On my old controller, when the batteries died, the water would just start running and not shut off automatically, as this controller apparently does. There was one function that I couldn’t seem to figure out how to use and when I emailed customer service, they promptly responded with a solution that fixed the problem I was encountering. Excellent customer service. I highly recommend this product.
Easy to use. Robust. Small size.
This item comes with a complete instruction manual (English and Spanish only).
All made of plastic requires 2 AAA batteries that aren’t included.
What I like is that Teflon tape is included as well as a spare filter.
I like that the battery compartment door is sealed to prevent water seeping through and reaching the batteries.
Both manual or programmed options. Fully programmable (minutes and hours).
I cannot quite test it out since it’s winter time here but it’s well made with a large enough screen to read but it doesn’t have a backlight screen.
The plastic rivets seem quite solid.
I find the rotating knob easy to use as opposed to other models having buttons to press.
I love timers–kind of a timer geek. I have several bird baths, and use timers as a method of adding water every day (timer connected to hose bib, and irrigation tubing connected to the out side of the timer). One of my timers was having problems last summer (after 4 years) so I ordered this new one.
This is a nicely sized single zone timer. It feels substantial and made of decent materials. To test it, I had to hook it to a 5′ hose in my laundry tray since all my outdoor hose bibs are shut off for the winter.
The product turned right up as soon as I installed the batteries. A short test is explained in both the quick start guide and the user guide to make sure the on/off valve is performing correctly. Programming the timer is a snap–instructions really not needed but are amply supplied and easy to understand.
Everything worked perfectly and I look forward to using this as soon as winter is over. I can recommend this product but will update if it does not perform adequately or does not last for the warranty period of one year.
I use a multi-zone timer/system for my backyard but my front yard is much simpler to manage so a single-zone timer like this one is perfect for the job. Living in the desert southwest, having a consistent watering schedule is essential even for xeriscape plants and this digital timer is easy to set up and manage. The digital face is easy to read even from a distance, and the knob dial is simple and intuitive to operate. It’s important to read through the Quick Start guide and manual carefully before the first use, as there are critical steps to initialize the valve so that it opens/closes properly before you turn on the water. It’s also important to note the operating limitations, including temperature ranges, as the ABS plastic body and connectors can’t tolerate freezing temperatures. It comes with a small roll of Teflon plumbers tape to ensure a good seal, and the connections have consistent and deep threads that make it easy to attach it to the spigot and hose. I like that it has an ‘off’ setting on the dial so there’s no confusion about whether it will run on the schedules programmed or not and the Manual setting option includes a timer countdown for when you need to use it for non-scheduled tasks like washing the car or hosing down the driveway. The only minor negative is that when setting up a schedule, you are limited to the schedule frequency repeating a set number of days vs. M-F day designations, but since this is a relatively simple timer that doesn’t rely on an app, that kind of limitation is to be expected. The clock gives you the option to use 12H or 24H time and there isn’t a date function, so you’ll have to adjust it manually for things like DST if needed. For the price, it’s got good capability and is very reliable if all you need to automate is a single zone for regular watering.
It's a back-saver!
Note: this review is for the RAINPOINT 1 Zone Sprinkler Timer with ABS Inlet, $29.99 at time of order.
This is my second one of these 1 zone Rainpoint timers. Last summer I got one for my container garden so I wouldn’t have to be constantly manually watering my plants (I have a bad back, so it was a killer). This timer worked perfectly all summer, and when I put batteries in it this year it came right on. One set of rechargeable Energizer batteries lasted the whole time I had it set up last summer. So I got this second one because I want to automate my watering in the front yard for my flower beds.
Setup is pretty easy, just make sure to wrap the plumber’s tape around the spigot valve at least 3-4 times to get a snug, leak-free installation. We used it on a double valve spigot and a pressure regulator for our drip irrigation system.
Tip: to improve longevity and protect the time from the rain, I punched two small holes in a gallon ziploc bag and kept the timer inside of it. Though I can’t say how much difference it’s made, I think the fact the first timer I got is still working this year is good enough to make me keep using the bag.
Overall, I can definitely recommend this. The price is right, and having the system automated is well worth every penny!
Rainpoint has been my go-to brand for controlling irrigation with my water hoses.
I have aquariums and use a RODI unit that runs straight from a water faucet. Using this timer, I’m able to make water for my RODI systems daily while also still having access to the faucet without the need to unattach my tubing. I can use the 2nd timer for irrigating my plants. Just attach the hose, set how long I want to use it, and walk away knowing that it will shut off on its own.
These type of units are a must for anyone who uses RODI systems as being able to automatically shut off your water (paired with a float switch) is the easiest way to consistently make water in a cost efficient way.
Set It and Forget I
This little gadget took the “chore” out of watering my lawn. Easy to set up, and it does its thing like a responsible little robot. My plants are happier, and I’m not stuck holding a hose. Win-win!
This 3-zone water timer makes garden care so much easier. I really appreciate being able to set different schedules for each zone. You can run zones individually, in a cycle, or even manually if needed — great flexibility.
Setup was pretty straightforward, and the unit feels solidly built. The large screen is easy to read, and I like the rain delay function to help avoid overwatering. I haven’t tested the battery life yet, but it’s running well so far.
Only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is that the hose threads feel a bit snug and took some careful tightening to avoid leaks. Also, while the interface is generally easy to use, it can take a few tries to remember which button does what.
All in all, though, this is a really handy tool if you’re managing multiple garden zones and want to automate your watering routine.
