This is a great brooder box. I used it many times. It is able to hold 15 chicks (slightly crowded) for the first week. With the right set up, chicks thrive in it. I’ve had great success with it as it helps keep them warm during the most crucial 1st week.
Lessons learned and advice from someone who used it a lot: It will not be a long term solution. Chicks grow quickly and will outgrow this past week 1 unless you only have maybe 3-5 of them. I have a built in brooder area in my large coop that I move them in after week 1. The bottom is wood. If you plan on using it a lot, it’s WHEN, not if, the bottom will rot. Chicks tend to spill some water no matter the set up. The bottom ended up splintering/rotting and I needed to throw my first one away after a few months. For my second one, I used textured shelving plastic to protect the bottom. I added a picture to show what I did. Not pretty, but it’s what I had on hand. Do not use the pads provided. The chicks dug under the shavings and started eating at the pad underneath. Next, both heaters mounted made the inside too warm even on a lower setting. I only use the bulb on a dimmer setting to increase the ambient temperature and then use a small heat plate. It gives the chicks a way to move away from the heat on one side if they feel too warm.
Overall, this is a great option. I just wanted to provide some insight on my experience and what I found as the best set up after much trial and error.
Ordered this to replace the brooder I originally purchased. My mistake for going cheap the first time around. That brooder said it was large enough for 10-15 chicks, but after 1 week, my 4 chicks were too crowded. I should have started with this brooder. It must be easy to assemble because I put it together without any redos. It’s sturdy and I like that you can open the brooder from the front and the top. The chicks have enough room for a warm zone and a cool zone. The radiant heat bulb is also working better than the super hot red flood light.
This brooder should work just fine until they are ready to go into the coop in about 3-4 weeks. I’m thinking it may work well as an xtra nesting box once it’s time as a brooder is finished.
Purchased this brooder for our 4 chicks. The brooder itself was sturdy, functioned perfectly and sized well for our small flock. The lamp setup was perfect. One being for warmth and the other meant to be the cool side and adjustable – both worked as intended. Our littles happily moved from one side to the other eating, drinking, playing and pooping. The temperature gauge was helpful. I did have an issue controlling the humidity but got tips online to help do that and I’m convinced I would have had similar issues with other brooders, so I’m still rating this one a 5 star. The accessories were a huge bonus also. This brooder really comes with all you need, so I thought it was an excellent value for the money.
So I read the reviews about this brooder and the others that are smaller but the same brand. I hatch a lot of chicks and am very tired of storage tote brooders. Especially seeing other people’s brooders. I knew the lamps and cables seem to be the downside of this brooder and I prefer brooder plate. So I didn’t hang/run the lamps. Instead I drilled some holes for ventilation. I hung a hook for water and I made the hole for the cables larger to accommodate my brooder plate plug. I then purchased a plastic tray about the size of the box to start using instead of puppy pads. I’ve never really used puppy pads and don’t want to start. I also don’t recommend the waterer that came with the brooder. It is tiny, maybe good for a day or two with new babies, but otherwise not great. My 3 day olds managed to get water spilled throughout their whole brooder immediately using it so I retired it and brought out my normal waterer. I currently have 10 chicks in there with another 5 due any day and I’m not worried about them running out of room for probably another week or two when they will move to a grow out cage. Overall, very happy. The front doors stick and seem to cause a lot of weak points, but I like seeing the chicks
I am pleasantly surprised at the quality of the brooder box! Its real wood, all the pilot holes were in the right place, and it fits together pretty seamlessly. Instructions could do with an upgrade, but overall simple to put together. Ive got 3 chick’s in it, and I think they’ll be be just fine in there for 3-4 weeks before they get cramped. I’ll probably just add a cage for a bit more space and this will suit them until theyre ready to go outside. Very happy with my purchase
Easy to put together. Cheap quality wood if you get it wet it warps and falls apart. BUT if you keep it clean and dry and use puppy pads under hemp bedding for your baby chickens they work great. I’ve used my first one for at least 4 hatches of chicks in the last few months. I now have 3 of these. Worth the money IF you take care of it.
