Excellent fit, good quality, nice finish.
Installation was straightforward and probably took less than 5 minutes. Soft close feature is very nice, avoiding those annoying, accidental cover drops during the night!
I live in an apartment with a roommate and our bathroom is right between our two bedrooms. The old toilet seat we had was one of those cheap plastic ones and every single time someone used the bathroom at night, the seat would slam down and make this loud BANG that would wake up whoever was sleeping. It got to the point where we were both super careful about lowering the seat by hand, but inevitably someone would forget at like 3AM and the whole apartment would hear it.
I finally decided to just replace the toilet seat myself instead of waiting for our landlord to do something about it. I looked at a bunch of different options and went with this KOHLER one because it had the soft-close feature and good reviews. Best decision I could’ve made for our living situation.
Installation was surprisingly easy. I’m not particularly handy but I managed to get the old seat off and this new one installed in maybe 20 minutes. It came with all the hardware I needed and the instructions were pretty straightforward. The only tool I needed was a wrench which I borrowed from my roommate. The bolts line up perfectly with the toilet bowl holes and everything tightened down securely.
The soft-close mechanism is seriously amazing. You can literally just let go of the seat from any height and it slowly lowers itself down without making any noise. No more slamming, no more waking each other up in the middle of the night. My roommate noticed it immediately the first time he used the bathroom after I installed it and was like “dude, thank you so much, that slam was driving me crazy.” Worth it just for the improved roommate relations honestly.
The seat itself is made of wood which I wasn’t sure about at first because I thought it might feel weird, but it’s actually really nice. It’s solid and sturdy, doesn’t flex or feel cheap like plastic seats do. The finish is smooth and it’s surprisingly comfortable to sit on. The wood also doesn’t get as cold as plastic does in the winter which is a nice bonus.
I’ve had this installed for about 5 months now and it still works perfectly. The soft-close mechanism hasn’t gotten any looser or started malfunctioning. Some reviews I read about other brands mentioned that the soft-close feature would stop working after a few months, but this KOHLER one has been consistent. It closes at the same gentle speed every single time.
Cleaning it is easy too. I just wipe it down with bathroom cleaner and it doesn’t stain or discolor. The wood finish seems to be sealed really well so it’s not absorbing any moisture or getting gross. Our old plastic seat would get these weird stains that wouldn’t come off no matter how much I scrubbed, but this one stays looking clean.
The fit is perfect on our toilet. It’s a round bowl and this seat fits exactly right with no overhang or gaps. The hinges are sturdy metal and they allow the seat to lift up and stay up without falling back down, which is nice. Everything about it just feels quality compared to the cheap builder-grade seat that was on there before.
One thing I really appreciate is that it doesn’t shift around or wiggle. The old seat would gradually work itself loose and start sliding to one side, which was super annoying. I’d have to retighten it like once a month. This KOHLER seat has stayed firmly in place since I installed it. The mounting hardware is really solid.
My girlfriend visits pretty often and she commented on how nice the toilet seat is, which is a weird compliment to get but I’ll take it. She said it’s way nicer than the one in her apartment and she’s thinking about getting one too. I’ve basically become an unofficial spokesperson for this toilet seat at this point because of how much better it is than regular ones.
The price was higher than a basic plastic seat obviously, but totally worth it for the quality and the soft-close feature. I looked at some cheaper soft-close options but they had mixed reviews about durability. The KOHLER brand seemed more reliable and so far that’s proven true. This thing is built to last.
I will say the color options are good too. I got the white one which matches our bathroom, but they have a few different finishes available if you want something that matches wood tones or whatever. The white finish has stayed bright white and hasn’t yellowed at all which sometimes happens with cheaper plastic seats.
The soft-close isn’t just for the seat either – the lid also has the same mechanism. So if you’re one of those people who closes the lid before flushing (which you should be doing anyway), it lowers down gently instead of slamming. Just another nice touch that makes the whole bathroom experience more pleasant.
If you’re living with roommates, family, or anyone else where bathroom noise is an issue, this is such an easy fix. The soft-close feature alone is worth the upgrade. And if you’re just tired of your cheap toilet seat feeling flimsy and gross, this is a massive quality improvement. Installation is easy enough that anyone can do it, and the KOHLER quality means it’s actually going to last instead of needing to be replaced in a year.
I never thought I’d be this enthusiastic about a toilet seat but here we are. It’s one of those small quality-of-life upgrades that you use every single day and it just makes things better. Highly recommend making the switch if you’re still dealing with a loud, cheap toilet seat.
This is a nice toilet seat. Closes itself, except the top is extremely slow to close and sometimes stops at the very top if it is not pulled to a spot where it seems to close easily. Probably might buy the next step up model next time. Installation was easy, except it requires a very large screwdriver head to really tighten the screws in place.
Replaced the old plastic toilet seat with this one and it is definitely an UPGRADE! he nice thing about this seat is that it has a “quiet close” and will not slam down by itself. It will slowly lower itself and is very quiet. The construction is very solid and fit the toilet perfectly. It was very easy to install and solidly anchored. The seat is easy to clean and it is a great value for the money. Because it is built from solid wood, it is not ice-cold when you sit down, which is a welcome change from the old plastic seat!
I bought this in “biscuit” which is a nice light beige color. Initially, I bought two of these. One of the seats sent was totally damaged, with a large chunk broken off from the seat. The other one had a “hinge cover” that was broken off from two thin hinge supports, although it did snap in place and seems to be fine. So, I sent the broken one back and later replaced it with an identical order. That replacement toilet seat arrived and seems just fine. The seats are very east to install, adjust and secure. They are substantial and the soft close feature is a plus. Started to give this 4 Stars, but then thought: in dealing with toilet seats, sometimes, sh_t happens, and you simply move on. So, I upped my rating to 5 stars without much hesitation.
Well made, but a very slow close
A good product, but as others have said, it really does take an age to close compared to any such items I’ve had before. Importantly it has remained fixed and not moved around.
Update. Contacted Kohler to get a replacement hinge and they are sending an entirely new seat! Yay Kohler.
QHinge broke after just three years. I promise you, I’m not getting all crazy rodeo riding the seat! It just broke. I can see the plastic of the hinge crystallized where it failed.
