The HP app makes the setup easy. Connect a USB cable first (not included W/printer) and the smart tank 6003 will find your wireless network. Then you remove the USB cable, and your ready to go.
After wanting to replace my old photo printer for several years, I finally decided to give the HP Smart Tank 6003 a try, and I’m very happy with the purchase. My previous printer was a dedicated photo printer with a five-color ink system, so I was a little skeptical about switching to a four-color printer. Fortunately, my concerns disappeared after the first photo prints. On high-quality photo paper, the results are excellent. I honestly don’t know if they’re better than my old printer, but they’re certainly good enough to frame and proudly display.
One of the biggest reasons I chose this model was the refillable ink tank system. Instead of constantly replacing expensive cartridges, this printer uses large ink bottles, and HP claims the included ink can last up to three years for many users. Filling the tanks was clean and surprisingly simple, and it’s easy to see how much ink remains at any time.
Setup was straightforward. I started using the HP Smart app on my phone and later finished the installation on my computer. The printer took a little while to recognize my home Wi Fi network, but once it did, everything worked smoothly. Overall, I don’t think you need to be particularly tech savvy to get it running.
One part of the setup that was new to me was installing the two print heads, one for the black ink and another for the color inks. My previous printers didn’t require this step, so I was a little apprehensive since the print heads are delicate components and can affect print quality if they’re damaged. Fortunately, HP does an excellent job guiding you through the process with clear, step by step instructions in the app. As long as you follow the instructions carefully, the installation is simple and went perfectly in my case.
The printer itself looks modern and well built, although it is larger than I expected. My previous all in one printer occupied noticeably less space, so make sure you have enough room for it. Another difference is that this model relies much more on the mobile app or computer for configuration since it only has a small display and minimal onboard controls. I’m still getting used to HP’s software, and some settings, such as choosing print quality, borderless printing, or color versus black and white, felt a little easier to access on my previous printer.
One thing to keep in mind is that this printer is designed more for everyday home and office use than for specialized media. It handles standard paper sizes very well, but it isn’t as versatile as my previous printer when it comes to different paper types and formats. My older printer accepted thicker media, supported a wider variety of paper and envelope sizes, and even included a dedicated tray for printing directly onto CDs and DVDs. None of those features are available here, so if you frequently print on specialty media, that’s something to consider.
Overall, though, those are relatively minor trade offs considering everything this printer offers. The print quality has exceeded my expectations, the refillable ink system should save a lot of money over time, and the scanner and wireless printing have worked well so far. Considering its price, I think this is an excellent value and a printer I can easily recommend.
We’ve been on the hunt for a new printer after our old one gave up on us from sitting in storage too long. We bought brand new ink, ran the cleaning cycle what felt like 20 times, and it still wouldn’t work…talk about a waste of ink! So I was really hoping this one would be better, and it absolutely is.
Before you start setup, make sure your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are turned on for wireless connection. I highly recommend using the HP 123 setup app because it walks you through everything with step-by-step instructions and pictures. As someone who is definitely not the best at putting things together, I had no issues at all. Setup took a little time, but it was incredibly easy.
The ink system is one of my favorite features. Instead of traditional cartridges, it comes with refill bottles that pour directly into the tanks. You do have to press the bottle down firmly until you hear it click (I didn’t realize that at first ), but once you do, it’s completely spill-proof and leak-proof. The printer says you’ll have a little black ink left over, and you do, but honestly it’s not much. I also love that you can easily see your ink levels right from the front of the printer.
There are also two printheads included that you’ll install during setup. The printer had me install the smaller black one first, then the color one, before it would continue the setup process. After that, it had me load paper, print a test page, and I was ready to go.
This printer really does it all. It’s a printer, scanner, and copier, and it’s even AI compatible, although I haven’t tried that feature yet.
The print quality is fantastic. I mainly wanted this for family photos, kids’ activity sheets, and coloring pages. Even on regular printer paper, the photos came out far better than anything my old printer could produce. I’m still waiting on my glossy photo paper because I’m excited to see just how good they’ll look then.
It includes up to 3 years of ink according to HP. I obviously haven’t owned it long enough to verify that claim, but based on how much ink comes with it, I can definitely believe it’ll last quite a while.
Yes, it’s more expensive than your average printer, but after doing some research, it’s competitively priced for everything it offers. Considering you get a printer, scanner, copier, refillable ink tanks, excellent print quality, and a huge amount of ink included, I genuinely think it’s worth the investment. If you’re looking for one machine that can handle everyday printing without needing separate devices, this is a fantastic option.
I’ll definitely update my review over time, but so far I’m extremely impressed!
The HP Smart Tank 6003 Printer, Scanner, Copier is an excellent printer. It prints beautifully
– crisp, clear, good color. I like the tank system. After years of buying price-inflated ink cartridges I think the tank system will be better and less expensive. So far so good. The printer itself is fairly intuitive for basic operations like printing and copies. It doesn’t have a place to load in multiple pages for copying a large document. That doesn’t bother me as most of what I need printed these days comes from my computer, phone or iPad.
I am less than thrilled with directions for connecting this to our WiFi. Hos online directions leave much to be desired. I ordered this all-in-1 unit because HP no longer supports the scanner on my 4yr. Old HP printer. I has digitally removed the scanning function’s ability to scan to or from my computer, which irks me a lot. As I was trying to set up the scanning drivers for this copier I kept receiving the message that this can’t scan to my computer. This is aggravating. And this has also become tomorrow’s project.
Overall HP built a nice unit with this tank all-in-1 machine. I’ll be very pleased if the provided ink is all I need for the next three years. Hey – I’ll be happy if it is all the ink I need for one year. Currently I’m spending about $400 a year on HP ink cartridges. The tank system seems like a strong improvement. It’s unfortunate that HP doesn’t have better UI for their customers. The online service is a very important part of the product since thorough written instructions aren’t included in the box. HP loses a star for their UI which is lacking and the need for just better directions in general. I shouldn’t have to struggle through vague online instructions to get ALL the functions on this machine to work.
Connects instantly to wireless, prints beautifully, 3 years of ink, scans nicely
This HP Smart Tank 6003 connected super easily to my wireless network, was easy to fill up the ink tanks and came with a three-year supply of ink, prints color beautifully, and scans beautifully. It feels sturdy and reliable and once I got it working, after the initial problems of setup, it has felt incredibly reliable and easy to use. This printer will save so much money in ink and it makes me feel comfortable printing color documents.
The printer is larger than I thought it would be but I like that it is because it means that the scanner surface can fit slightly bigger than an 8.5 by 11 page. Everything you need to use it comes in the box, with the three large containers of colored ink, yellow, pink, and blue, and extra large container of black ink, two printer heads, an electric cable with the plug, and some brief instruction booklets.
The ink was so easy to fill and I love that you can see how much ink is actually in the tanks by the transparent windows on the outside. I also liked that I could hear the ink filling up in the tanks and when I removed the ink bottles no ink fell out and it was absolutely completely mess free because of the way that they were designed. It’s a beautiful design.
I did have multiple problems initially setting up the printer, from a paper jam which likely happened because I put the paper in too early, and then not being able to access the print heads right away because of that, and the app not registering or even finding the printer probably because I already had an HP laser printer in the app. I used their AI help which helped me get rid of the printer jam and then I was able to change out the printer heads. And then I moved to my laptop instead of my phone to again access the app, and this time while it found the printer it gave an error message part way through and it wouldn’t give me the ability to scan, so I downloaded additional software from HP’s official website and then it set it up so that it showed up in HP smart app and did allow me to scan. That was an important step because to be able to use the scanner and change settings I needed it to show up in the app. I don’t know how many of those problems were because I had another HP printer registered in the app or if it was just a fluke, but once I got past that the printer and scanner have worked beautifully and reliably.
I had no problems at all with the wireless part of the setup which has always been a problem with other brands of printers. The app immediately connected it to my own wireless once I said that yes that was the correct wireless group. I was so glad to have that part of it be easy. And the rest of it was likely a fluke.
I printed some of my own art, documents, and scanned and printed some of my own art, and all of it has worked beautifully, reliably, and quickly. The scan worked out really well though I would be even happier if the platen area was larger, but as it was I was able to get my entire piece of art scanned, even though it was slightly bigger than an 8.5 by 11 page, and I just had the tiniest bit of distortion at the top because my art was bigger than likely recommended to scan.
Everything I have printed is beautiful in colour and with clear print and the scanner works beautifully as well. The control panel on the front is easy to read and to figure out, and there are some codes like for the paper jam but it also shows you there’s an issue and it’s easy enough to look up in the little booklet or online.
I love how much ink is included and that it will last a good long time, and that I can print many colour documents without worrying about the cost. This is a reliable printer that prints very well and quickly, scans really well, and once it’s set up has easy to use software. Recommended.
Amazing printer!!!
This is my new all-time favourite printer! It took only five minutes to set up. I didn’t have to even crack open my laptop, I did it all on my phone. All I had to do was download and open the app (free and easy to use / no subscription needed), connect the printer on Wi-Fi and then register it and that was done. Then, you follow the simple instructions, including filling the ink tanks (all you do is open each individual bottle and pop them in the machine upside down in the matching receptacle) and then you remove all of the cardboard and plastic that keeps it safe during transport. The printer then runs a test print paper, which you scan and then photocopy and then you’re done! This thing is awesome, I’ve already printed a bunch of pictures on regular paper and plan on ordering photo paper so I can reprint and frame them. The reason I chose this one is that it does double sided printing, which isn’t standard for home printers. The quality of the print is exceptional, really happy with that aspect as well. Another unexpected bonus that I actually ordered this in the colour “portobello” (kind of a grey/taupe colour) it’s so nice to have a printer that’s is a bit of a different colour than standard white or black. You can really tell the difference in quality with a brand like HP, I’m really happy with how easy this was to set up and use. I will be showing my elderly parents how to use it, they will get it in no time. I absolutely recommend this for the price and the quality. It may seem a little bit pricey at $399 Canadian, however this is a printer that has ink in it that will last up to three years. We all know that the initial cost of upfront isn’t the most expensive it’s refills! The ink is more affordable than cartridges.
So I’ll be honestI’ve been an Epson Ecotank girl for years upon years. I’ve owned at least three for various reasons and still have one that is about 5 years old that’s still going strong. But I recently moved my office downstairs and the ole Epson is upstairs. I decided to order this HP to use as my office printer downstairs and holy moly, I might be a convert! The set up was extremely easy. It connected beautifully to my wireless network on the first try and continues to pop up easily for printing. I will say I wish there were more options for printing within the pop up from my iPhone. I do the majority of printing straight from my phone, and I needed to resize a label I needed to print and there was no option for thateven just a rescale plus minus would be sufficient but there was nothing. Maybe there would’ve been from my laptop but with today’s technology and the amount of people who basically run a business from a phone or iPad I’d think more than enough of us would like better print options from our phones. I’ve had no issues with paper jams and it pulled thick business card cardstock through very nicely. I’d say colors are similar to my Epson, but quite a bit darker on the greens though. Not sure if that’s a setting somewhere or if I’ll have to change my logo to a lighter color to accommodate the color matching. It does seem like a reliable printer though, and I love how quiet it is. Hopefully the ink really does last a good long time like my Epson do, if so I’ll be an HP girl from here on out!

I have always trusted HP to be my printer…I have owned them for over 30 years. This printer is great, as usual, and having the ink tanks is a big plus! It was easy to set up and so far has worked flawlessly!
Pros: Lots of ink (WOW). HP Quality. Easy setup in Windows and Linux Mint. Excellent print quality. Great for home use. Fairly quiet. Connects to WIFI easily. Very easy to add ink and install print heads… no muss, no fuss.
Cons: Setup did not work with my older model phone (Samsung Galaxy S20). Setting up the scanner in Linux Mint was a bit more difficult.
Overall: I’m very impressed with this printer. First it was packaged very well. It was wrapped in a plastic bag that had handles to make it easy to lift out of the box. The bag then came in handy for all the trash (empty ink bottles, styrofoam, tape, and cardboard). I tried to do the setup in Linux Mint and I got an error message that the OS and Browser were not compatible. I went to my phone and my phone was not compatible. I then went to a Windows 10 computer and the setup went flawlessly. I then went back to my Linux Mint PC and it detected the printer all by itself. Cool! Printing is faster than it was on my old color printer and I dare say the print looks better.
Part of the setup involves adding the ink and installing the printheads. The setup directs you step by step and was as easy as it gets. Not a drop of ink was spilled or got on my hands… awesome! One thing I like is that if the printheads go bad, it is easy to replace them. My last printer did not have that capability which is why I needed to replace it.
Scanning to my computer on Windows was easy, but what about on Linux? You will have to install special drivers. So I installed HPLIP from the Software Manager, but was unable to scan. After some research I found that you need to use a more updated version of HPLIP by installing it from a repository using the terminal. I also had to install XSANE. Once they were installed I opened XSANE and scanning was easy peasy.
I believe the majority of people buying this printer will be using Windows and with Windows installation is a snap. People who use Linux understand that setup may be more involved and I think most don’t mind the added challenge. As for the printer, I love it. I’ve never owned a Smart Tank printer, but what a fantastic idea! If you use your color printer a lot, you will save a significant amount of money on ink. I very highly recommend this printer.
The days of paying for ink are over. They finally got that right. It comes with the machine. It is a good deal of ink too, not a miniature envelope in a tiny plastic case. Just so your aware, you do have to force the inks to pop onto the input.
The days of $30 dollar printers is over as well. Your paying for a good printer 3 years of ink. Printers that claim to include “3 years of ink” typically yield between 6,000 and 8,000 color sheets. It is considered a Super-Tank printer.
The printer must be used weekly. No matter the quality of the printer, ink can and will freeze in the line and you don’t want that to happen with a unit this expensive.
It’s meant to be plugged in and left on. It has some process where it will wake in the middle of the night and flush ink into a reservoir to keep the lines from freezing.
The print quality is good. Why only good? Because I bought a HP photo printer nearly 30 years ago that printed as good as this, actually better because of the paper I used, but don’t stop reading yet.
It is definitely meant for thicker paper. I used standard 1990’s Xerox paper for the prints and the ink really softens it and can be seen on the other side. It was still okay. It does not smear, it just needs better paper. So I assume when I buy the shiny, thicker more expensive paper, it will print phenomenally.
The setup is where you might run into problems. It is extensive and ridiculous.
Once you put paper it it will whirr and grind and it sort of does it’s own thing on its own time. Eventually it spits out a setup paper. You actually have to scan that paper to get to the next step, even if the printout is lacking color or damaged. Mine was only printing blue and black by then. I had to print out 4 sheets of different info and tests before I used it. That’s fine, I did not want to damage it. The test prints show you what button does what because they don’t always light up when you want them to and you can’t see what they mean. Use Google.
Newer printers expect a network so if your using your computer via roaming WiFi or don’t use a router you will have to take extra steps. If you don’t use the app, extra steps. It does Not have a Bluetooth print. To print via roaming you will have to disconnect your internet, connect to the printer and back again to be online. So, be near your router and go with the app. If not, go with Google or GPT for answers. The button combinations are ridiculous. Up, down, up, down, left, right, left, right, A, B, Print!
It’s a heavy and heavy duty unit but it is not made to fall off of something or be dropped. This thing can actually print out, flip your paper over and print something else on the other side. I made the first print in 17 seconds, below; it has blue – green – purple – yellow and red. They shading is very nice. I now have it figured out and I enjoy it immensely.
