Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersFinally, a printer where the ink actually lasts!
I am so glad I finally switched to an ink tank printer! The setup was surprisingly easy, and filling the tanks was completely mess-free. The amount of ink it comes with is incredible—it feels like I won’t need to buy refills for a very long time. The print quality is sharp for both text documents and color images, and the wireless connection has been flawless. Absolutely worth the investment!

Got this printer because a previous HP All-in-One we own appears to be nearing the end of its life cycle. (Throwing weird, seemingly unfixable errors.) This model doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of that other printer, in that it lacks a document feeder and the duplexing, but that may be a good thing considering my other printers all seem to have problem with the feeder now.

Setup was straightforward. You are given the option to follow along online for the setup or use the instructions in the manual. I opted for the manual, and I appreciate HP for that option as sometimes it isn’t convenient to be online. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. I was a little concerned about filling up the ink tanks, but that ended up not being messy. Also, the print heads can be hard to see if you’re standing over the printer. Look for the pink and black tag. The heads align above that. (Don’t worry about harming them taking off all the orange guards and tape. You’ll be fine.)

The paper feed in back stumped me for a bit . Wasn’t clear what to do with the guide in order to get regular 8 1/2 by 11. If you find yourself stumped, you’re probably trying to slide it the wrong direction. It goes the other way!

Connecting the printer to the network and other computers was simple. HP’s Smart App did most of the work. Print quality is excellent. On par with my LaserJet. Print speed is acceptable. Not blazing fast, but not agonizingly slow.

I miss duplexing and the document feed, but I can live without. Especially if the printer ends up saving on ink and being more trouble-free.

    So far, so good. Recommended.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersA Refillable Workhorse for the Home Up to 2 Years of Ink Included with AI Smarts
If you’re tired of the high cost and waste of traditional ink cartridges, the HP Smart Tank 5003 offers a compelling alternative. This all-in-one printer is designed for high-volume, low-cost home printing, using a cartridge-free refillable tank system that delivers exceptional value right out of the box.

    Cartridge-Free Convenience and Massive Savings

The standout feature is the up to 2 years of ink included in the box. Instead of cartridges, you get large ink bottles to fill the built-in reservoirs. This setup dramatically lowers the cost per page, making it ideal for families, students, and anyone who prints frequently. The refill process is designed to be clean, easy, and spill-free. Keep in mind that the “up to 2 years” claim is based on HP’s estimate of average monthly print volume; actual duration will depend on how much you print.

    Solid Performance for Home Printing

The printer delivers capable performance for everyday documents and photos, with print speeds of up to 12 pages per minute for black and 5 ppm for color. It supports a range of paper types and handles a monthly duty cycle of up to 3,000 pages.

    Smart Connectivity and AI Capabilities

For added convenience, the 5003 includes smart features:

AI-capable technology that can optimize print formatting for web pages and emails.

Self-healing, dual-band Wi-Fi that automatically detects and resolves connection issues.

HP Smart App for mobile printing, scanning, and copying from your smartphone.

    A Complete All-in-One Solution

Beyond printing, the 5003 functions as a full all-in-one, offering scanning and copying capabilities. It’s a compact solution suitable for a home office or study area.

    Final Verdict

If you’re looking to dramatically reduce your printing costs without sacrificing functionality, the HP Smart Tank 5003 is a strong contender. The inclusion of up to two years’ worth of ink makes it an exceptional value for high-volume home users. Its AI capabilities and smart connectivity features are modern bonuses that streamline workflow. However, ensure the initial upfront cost fits your budget, as tank printers typically cost more than basic cartridge models—though the long-term savings are substantial.

Golden Review Award: 1 From Our UsersEasy, Quiet, Useful Enough for Most homes.
For its class the HP Smart Tank 5003 Wireless All-in-One Ink Tank Scanner Printer does what it should with no reason for complaints.

Just as they say, this is a home setup for general light-to-Medium use.

I got mine to replace a noisy laserjet that was useless for the screenprint transparencies that I want. I also print shipping labels so the big black ink bottle and dedicated black pad were nice to see.

It’s beautiful to feel free to print without the trash and expense of full cartridge replacement. I’m already printing things just to see what I get.

The color is not looking entirely accurate so far but it’s not bad and that’s on regular paper. I don’t have photo paper yet. The photo prints are limited to about the size of regular printing paper, there’s no way to print a panaramic shot without making it small or butchering it.

This printer is quiet enough that you are unlikely to wake anyone.

It took me a while to figure out how to use WiFi Direct. I eventually abandoned the HP guides and asked my frenemy ai. Setup was otherwise pretty intuitive.

The clean ink filling is a pleasure to use but requires a firm push down on the bottle to break the membrane. Resist the urge to squeeze out the last bit, just let it drain.

The cost of the 5003 is competitive for a tank printer scanner and worthwhile discount sales happen regularly.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersGreat Budget Tank Printer Once You Get Past HP's Setup
Setting this printer up through HP’s system was a pain, which honestly seems to be pretty typical with HP printers. Once I got through that and had everything connected, though, it has been fantastic. The white design looks clean and modern, the size is reasonable for a desk or dorm room, and filling the ink tanks was easier than I expected.

For everyday printing, scanning, and copying, this does exactly what I need without much fuss. Print quality is very good for documents, schoolwork, and light office use, and the refillable ink tanks make it a much better value for anyone who prints regularly. This isn’t going to replace a high-end photo printer, but that’s really not what it’s meant for.

I think this would excel for a college student going off to school. They could use it for years to print assignments and scan paperwork without constantly worrying about buying expensive cartridges. For the price and the amount of ink included, it’s a solid 4-star printer that becomes very easy to live with once you survive the initial HP setup.

Golden Review Award: 1 From Our UsersA Printer That Prints Instead of Throwing Tiny Ink Tantrums
After using printers that seem to treat low ink warnings as a full-time hobby, this ink tank printer is a refreshing change. The setup was straightforward, and once connected to Wi-Fi, it was ready to print without turning the process into an engineering project.

The refillable ink tank system is one of my favorite features. Refilling is surprisingly clean and simple—the bottles fit into the tanks and do the work themselves, so there was no ink-covered fingers or frantic search for paper towels. It’s a clever design that makes routine maintenance much less intimidating.

Print quality is excellent for everyday documents, school assignments, recipes, and colorful graphics. Text comes out crisp, while color prints are vibrant without looking oversaturated. The scanner and copier are equally easy to use, making this a true all-in-one machine for home use.

Wireless printing worked well from both a computer and mobile devices, which means no more emailing yourself a document just to print it from another room.

One of the biggest advantages is the huge ink capacity. Instead of wondering whether printing a 20-page document will trigger an ink emergency, you can actually print with confidence. It’s almost strange not hearing a printer constantly asking for something.

Overall, this is an easy-to-use, reliable all-in-one printer that delivers sharp prints, simple maintenance, and a refill system that takes much of the frustration out of owning a printer. If you’ve ever felt like your previous printer had a personal grudge against you, this one may finally restore your faith in home printing.
