Oh boy, where to being. I have a few hundred dollar digital microscope for electronics work. I figured a $30 unit would be fine “on the fly” and to let me keep it in a drawer nearby, not worry about it, quick look up of stuff away from my soldering station, etc.
My first surprise was the box – unlike the listing or included photos, this thing actually says “Kids Microscope” in a cartoonish kid-like font, in a colorful cartoonish box – absolutely not what I was expecting. Opening, the unit is plastic, but felt “okay.” Turning on without charging, it showed a cartoon on the screen – “Kids Microscope” again lending to the kid feeling.
There is a large adjustment wheel (vertical) that lets you adjust focus. There are 6 bright orange buttons. I figured this would be a piece of junk. IT IS NOT – it is surprisingly decent and useful, especially for the price.
Surprise 1 – It came with 6 slides – these things are far from high quality, BUT a nice surprise and added to the fun quotient – there is a fish scale, tomato epidermis, bodhi vein (type of plant?), corn leaf, dandelion fluff, and a goose feather (but it was really a bit of quill). These slides are pure junk, but hey, it was a bonus, and fun. And shows what this thing could be capable of.
The unit can also connect to a PC, which I didn’t do (I did with my prior more expensive microscope, and I expect no issue connecting.
The unit also has a TF slot; I did not put a card in there, but appreciate the on-board memory can hold I believe 200 photos.
The unit allows video recording, photographs, and is a delight to use with 3 levels of brightness, plus off. It comes with a wrist strap and USB-C to USB-A cable for charging and data transfer.
I found it easy to use, and was quite interesting when I zoomed in on my leather desk blotter. It also hugely magnified tiny numbers and a rip on my tea bag label, and it will be great for electronics work or if I want to see a close up of things. For example, I used my phone’s zoom last fall to try to video aphids on my tree; I’m sure this handy little microscope can do so as well.
I wish there was adjustable magnification, or reduced magnification.
All in all, though this is billed as a kid’s toy, I think it can be used for non kids as well – I wish the graphics were less child like, and the moniker of Kids Microscope really knocks it down a peg; if it didn’t show as such, I’d not have considered it for kids.
This may be the most fun you’ll have with some $30 in a long time. I really like it.

The concept behind this device is really cool, and it is absolutely great for numismatists or anyone into coin collecting who needs to identify small errors and look closer at the fine details on a mint mark or coin surface. Of course, you do not need to stop at coins, because it is versatile enough to inspect pretty much anything you can fit inside or underneath it, like jewelry or small electronic components. The focus adjustment works very smoothly and handles fine adjustments well, and surprisingly, you can even focus on objects in the far distance if you ever had a specific reason to use it that way. The built-in light is another huge plus because it makes everything incredibly easy to see, providing plenty of illumination to clearly light up dark objects directly under the magnifier without creating awkward shadows or glare. The only reason I knocked it down to four stars is that the magnification claim feels a bit exaggerated, as I do not believe it is truly magnifying up to the listed 1000x level in the way someone might traditionally think. It is likely calculating that 1000x number based on how much larger the final image appears on the screen relative to the physical size of the object, rather than the optical lens itself actually zooming in 1000x closer. That being said, it is still a solid, well-performing tool that gives you plenty of clarity for the price
This is a pretty nice gadget for what it is. The screen itself is sharp and clear with plenty of brightness. In fact, I wish there was an option to adjust the brightness because if you’re working in a dark room, it might even be considered a tad too bright.
This is advertised as a coin microscope but the welcome screen shows it as a “kids microscope”. I think it could be a great gift for kids and it’s good enough to keep kids busy and involved at least for a while.
I used this to check different surfaces up close. It’s not necessarily a microscope in the traditional sense: more like a macrophotography tool. It has a recessed lens, so you don’t have to worry about accidentally scratching it. It also has multiple LEDs around the lens which provide plenty of light to illuminate the subject. These LEDs have 3 brightness settings. The thing is, the microscope does auto brightness to avoid overexposing the image, so ultimately all 3 brightness settings more or less look the same.
Unit came charged at 3 out of 4 bars, which is a great place to store batteries. I initially used it without charging and it kept running for a good while. It seems that the internal battery holds plenty of juice for the device.
Images taken with the microscope look very sharp on the internal screen but they look a little over interpolated when shown on a larger computer monitor.
The USB-C port can be used to charge the device but also works as a data port to import the SD card content to your computer or connect it to your computer just like a webcam.
If you’re looking for a practical gadget that’ll let you take a closer look at various objects and surfaces, this is worth a look. If you want something that’ll spark some curiosity in kids, it’s a genuinely fun gift that doesn’t feel like a waste of money.
