Golden Review Award: 1 From Our UsersComplete kit but not an IP camera
This is definitely quite a bit less expensive than the big name brand. It has everything needed to do the job for a good price, but it’s also not exactly current generation technology. Most Boats which are large enough to have a camera and video recording device installed are probably going to have Starlink or at least cellular Internet, and thus probably will have either Wi Fi or Ethernet. So in that context an IP camera which connects to the existing computer data network would be optimal. And pair it with a network video recorder which could record from multiple cameras across that network.

Inability to manifest on a WI fi network leads to slightly odd choices, like the HDMI to USB-C video converter, which apparently is intended to be connected to a tablet. But see that’s where a WI fi capability would be the ideal feature-Most people don’t want to have to connect their video source to their tablet with a cable. I think realistically a person would probably get a small monitor and connect it instead and mount it somewhere near the helm.

On the other hand there’s something to be said for going basic because it’s less fiddly and there’s less to go wrong. This should work fine even if you have nothing but just this kit and a 12v/2a DC power source of any kind.

I feel like the degree to which a component is “marine grade” might vary a little bit in the kit components but overall it seems OK. I’m speaking more about the wiring here than the camera itself.

In terms of recording to a hard drive or solid state drive, you’ll need to supply your own 2.5 inch drive of either type. You only have to remove four screws to take the cover off the video recorder and installing the drive is as simple as just connecting the two cables inside. The camera connects to the video recorder with a cable that appears to be Ethernet but probably isn’t, and then it carries power as a separate cable alongside the data. And not to keep harping on computer networks (and full disclosure–I work on computer networks for a living), but this would be the ideal case for power over Ethernet.

If you’re considering this camera please take a look at the schematic picture from the manual which I have posted with this review. It will show you exactly how you would need to hook things up and you can judge for yourself if this matches how you would like to do things.

In summary, overall it’s a substantially better price than some other option, albeit while making use of proprietary communications technologies whereas I would like to see use of open standards (Ethernet, ONVIF, wifi, PoE, etc)
