The People vs. Larry Flynt {Limited Edition] [4K Ultra HD]

The story of controversial pornography publisher Larry Flynt, and how he became a defender of free speech.

FREE SPEECH AIN’T CHEAP After a seven year absence, Academy Award® winning-director Miloš Forman (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, 1975; Amadeus, 1985) returned with the epic tale of Larry Flynt – hillbilly underdog, eccentric entrepreneur, and founder of Hustler Magazine. A cinematic tour de force that follows the tribulations of one of America’s most unapologetic iconoclasts, The People vs. Larry Flynt is a wild ride, screaming at the top of its lungs for the survival of free press and the relevance of the First Amendment. Standing at the junction of comedy and drama, between courtroom antics and a most unique love story, this historical masterpiece sorely debates the necessity for free speech, denouncing a state where democracy collapses under the weight of prudish and institutionalized religious backward thinking. Controversial, shameless, thought-provoking, Larry Flynt – the dissident, the provocateur, the unlikely champion of free speech – battles against censorship for our right to bad taste and self-expression. Produced by Oliver Stone (JFK) and skilfully penned by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (Ed Wood), The People vs. Larry Flynt breaks through with a cast spearheaded by Woody Harrelson (Natural Born Killers) giving his most compelling performance in the title role, supported by rock star Courtney Love (Man on the Moon) as his soul mate Althea and Edward Norton (Fight Club) as his cunning but trustworthy lawyer. This special 30th Anniversary edition features a brand new 4K restoration from the original 35mm negative, and an array of new and archival special features.

    Never received the disc
I ordered this item from RAD DVD but never received it (yes, I was credited the amount).

RAD DVD sent shipping confirmation where I saw that RAD DVD does NOT include the DVD case. This is not on a particular item (covered by Amazon T&C), but ON ALL DVD’s FROM RAD DVD. I complained to RAD DVD and he saw that I would be raising this to Amazon so RAD DVD cancelled the order!

RAD DVD does not include the case in order to reduce S&H costs. However, in the Amazon system the buyer always pays $3.49 because it is normally expected that the case is included (In Canada it costs about $2.10 to ship a DVD with it’s case in a padded mailer). RAD DVD ONLY ships the disc, however, reducing the cost to about $1 or less. RAD DVD pockets the difference and makes more profit.

RAD DVD is unfair to buyers and unfair to other sellers who include the case. Yes, RAD DVD points this out in his sales pages. But I never noticed it. I look for a good price from the closest Canadian seller and assume they are good faith sellers who aren’t abusing Amazon’s T&C’s.

The Amazon T&C’s allow sellers to ship without the case because the case is missing or badly damaged. This is to be used on an as needed basis. Reasonable.

However ALL RAD DVD sales are without the case. This is a deliberate manipulation of the Amazon T&C’s to pocket more S&H money from customers.

DO NOT BUY FROM “RAD DVD” if you, like me, honour good practices from sellers. RAD DVD is unscrupulous.

As to The People v. Larry Flynt, it is a fun movie. Woody’s acting is a bit over the top. Courtney Love is brilliant. I’ll eventually find it from a reliable seller who understands that people want the case – especially when it is included in the S&H charge!

    a classic
a great adult film , up there with Boogie nights and auto focus . Harrelson and Love are great together and their unconventional love story is particularly moving. Not a film for the pc crowd or the christian moral majority [hence some of the bad reviews posted here]. I loved the portayl of 70s america and the cameo role by Flynt himself playing the judge . Excellent.

    Legal humo
I have always liked this movie because for one it actually redefined a lot of our obscenity laws as well as defamation and what you could say about a public figure such as a reasonable person believe a joke about well known figure that has a very high standing in the community. this is very important for freedom of speech And the humor of Larry Flynt just was very spot on by Woody Harrelson. I was brought to literal tears right the end about the vengeful act of his religious nemesis and how she died, but he just loved her so much and he just keep fighting for what is right what is just in the court of law. To get the Supreme Court to laugh and talk about the most pornographic and defamation of our public figures, let alone political figures has dated back all the way to George Washington and that lawyer portrayed by Ed Norton was beautifully done

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersIf I Had to Choose One of Them, Flynt or Falwell ...
… to be elected Censor of this New Roman Republic of America, Flynt would get the nod. That would have been true even before I watched this film, not because of any regard I have for Flynt or for Hustler magazine but because of my contempt for Jerry Falwell, for his extremism and bigotry, and for his involvement with Charles Keating. Perhaps I should recuse myself, therefore, from reviewing this film, since I couldn’t possibly react impartially to the evidence in the trial of Flynt for libel and the subsequent appeals processes that took Flynt and Falwell to the US Supreme Court.

As portrayed by actor Woody Harrelson, porn-publisher Larry Flynt wasn’t a guy you’d want for a son-in-law. He was loud, crude, sleazy, narcissistic, sociopathic, greedy, and a bully. Harrelson makes him terrifyingly real; I’m sure if I met the real Flynt, i’d be perplexed and wonder why he didn’t look like Woody. There’s a lot of very skillful acting in this film, and brilliant directing by Czech-American Milos Forman, whose previous films had included: Loves of a Blonde, The Firemen’s Ball, Taking Off, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Hair, and Amadeus. Honestly, I would never have watched “The People vs Larry Flynt” if it were not for my respect for Milos Forman as a director.

But I have to confess that the first fifteen or twenty minutes of this film left me skeptical. Flynt is obnoxious, the sleaze shots are nauseating, the whole scenario seems pointless … until the “good people” of Ohio, people including Charles Keating, resolve to make a martyr of Flynt. And then the film becomes increasingly powerful even while Flynt himself becomes increasingly unpalatable. It is a film about civil liberties, about freedom of expression, about the right of any individual to resist the oppressive of any self-proclaimed “Moral Majority”. Actor Edward Norton delivers some ripping good rhetoric in favor of freedom-of-conscience in his portrayal of Flynt’s lawyer, Alan Isaacson, in front of the Supreme Court. Flynt’s personal life may be seen as a tragedy with laughable elements — he does get shot and paralyzed, his wife does become a junkie and an AIDS victim, and he does become mentally unsettled — but the film is has a triumphant happy ending.

Golden Review Award: 21 From Our UsersOne of my top movies
This is an all-time favorite movie of mine. It’s an hilarious story about the First Amendment told from the angle of a porn hustler who founded Hustler magazine and was targeted by all kinds of censorship and religious groups but ultimately revealed a truth that we, as Americans, must understand. We have the right to parodize public figures, and even an outspoken minister qualifies as a public figure. That Jerry Falwell was, in my opinion, a child, helped to match the fact that Larry Flynt had been attacked so much that he had gone from running a strip club where business was going down, down, down not due to Flynt’s management but due to lack of revenues to calling Jerry Falwell “Jerry Fart-well” on the stand under oath. I honestly can’t imagine an actor other than Woody Harrelson who could have pulled off this character. I have no idea how close he is to the real one, but this is a vibrant, rambunctious and bull-headed rock star who caused problems because he got rich, and porn pissed off a lot of people who took strong “moral” stances.

It’s funny, those people. In the time they worked to get the magazine banned and Larry Flynt basically hanged and castrated for going a bit further than Playboy and other magazines, they could have had fundraisers to, I don’t know, build houses for the poor or help set up rehabilitation facilities? But it’s really not about ‘decency’ when you boil everything away. It’s about the fact that we as humans and Americans have to accept that other people have opinions that may not be ours. We may think they’re offensive, and those personally attacked certainly have a right to feel offended, but that’s where it ends. Suing the people who made it just exposes the nerve. The best thing to do is ignore it and try to do what’s right regardless. At least, that’s what I would imagine a group of true Christians to do. Spread love and that stuff.

Speaking of which, Larry has a weird foray into religious porn. Yeah, you read that correctly. He gets converted which lasts until he has another major setback. This is much to the relief of Courtney Love’s character. She’s another who doesn’t need to give another acting performance after her work in this movie. She was the only choice for her role. She and Edward Norton, Flynt’s lawyer, do fantastic supporting work, but the antagonists are particularly memorable. James Cromwell sneers and describes, over a fundraising dinner and passing out copies of Hustler, the images it contains (“woman and woman engaged in sexual congress”). He’s more in the background, but his character is an interesting one notwithstanding. The actor who played Jerry Falwell was another work of perfect casting. He looks just like Falwell and conveys a childlike, “but I’m a good boy!” mentality throughout. His attorney has to be commended for adding to the comedy perfectly. During the same exchange as the aforementioned “Fart-well,” he and Larry get into an argument in French. His French is real, but Larry’s very much so isn’t and is basic at the absolute highest level. The camera then goes to the court reporter who doesn’t have an idea what the hell she should be typing. This is great stuff.

I can’t recommend this movie highly enough. It’s very thoughtful, engaging and has some of the best movie characters I’ve met who will stay with me.

Golden Review Award: 13 From Our UsersCan Really Change Your Mind About Things!
The People vs. Larry Flynt is a 1996 American biographical drama film directed by Milo Forman and starring Woody Harrelson, Courtney Love, and Edward Norton. It chronicles the rise of pornographic magazine publisher Larry Flynt and his subsequent clash with religious institutions and the law.

Perhaps it would be fair to start by saying that the narrative element of this film is handled subjectively well. The events covered span over the course of about 40 years, and 2 hours may not seem long enough to make this a cohesive piece; On the contrary, the nuances and important elements of Larry’s life are given a sufficient amount of attention, and the story is told in such a way that it is very easy to follow. The only pitfall to this is that some of the relationships seem a little contrived and perhaps maybe even a little bit “fake” but this is acceptable given the circumstances and obvious ambitions possessed by the director and screenwriters.

This movie received accolades for the separate performances Of Harrelson, Norton and Love; more than deserved, each actor holds their own and the success of this film dord not rest on the shoulders of one individual that outshines the rest. Harrelson is gritty, obscene, and unapologetically authentic. Norton is humble, resourceful, and as sharp as a tack. Love is convincingly loyal, understandably naive, and perhaps the tiniest bit misguided. The combination of these separate character traits in acute amounts allows the story to be told in a way that is natural and doesn’t turn into a gigantic cringe-fest.

Perhaps the best thing about this film is that it’s the perfect example of inorganically telling a story Involving politics in a way that is both entertaining and largely accurate. There are no attempts to tone down the sleaziness people can expect given the subject matter, but the main topic at hand – freedom of speech – is given an equivocal amount of respect and consideration that can’t be ignored. Debates and public outcry regarding what material is considered “appropriate” are juxtaposed in such a way that the conclusion A)Makes total sense and B)Hardly calls for any amount of immediate opposition that isn’t obviously emotionally charged. If you find yourself among the crowd of “nay-sayers” when pornography comes to mind I would absolutely encourage you to watch this film with an open mind as your inclinations in regards to censorship may need some adjusting afterwards – the message really is THAT powerful.

Largely important especially given our current political climate:

    I would recommend it!

    Value Your Freedom
    Good movie.

I recommend it to anyone that values their freedom based upon the United States Constitutional Amendments that have been hard won and need to be continuously defended against from those who would be happy to strip you of your rights if it fits into their agenda.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThe People vs. Larry Flynt – Powerful, Provocative, and Surprisingly Moving
The People vs. Larry Flynt is a bold and thought-provoking film that dives deep into the true story of one of the most controversial figures in American free speech history. Woody Harrelson gives an unforgettable performance as Larry Flynt, capturing both his outrageous personality and his unexpected role as a defender of the First Amendment. Courtney Love is also fantastic—raw, emotional, and surprisingly powerful.

This movie doesn’t shy away from the tough stuff. It’s gritty, uncomfortable at times, but always compelling. What really makes it shine is how it turns what could’ve been a typical biopic into a sharp, engaging courtroom drama with real emotional weight. You don’t have to agree with Larry Flynt to appreciate how fiercely the film defends the importance of freedom of expression.

If you’re into true stories, legal battles, or just want a movie that challenges your thinking, The People vs. Larry Flynt is absolutely worth the watch. Smart, intense, and surprisingly human.
