How do I install the -gallon bucket waterer in my coop?
This center waterer includes an adjustable stand for indoor or outdoor use. Wood screws secure it in coops, while ground stakes provide outdoor stability. A 13mm magnetic driver bit is included for quick install.
Will chickens learn to use horizontal nipples easily?
Yes. Most chickens learn quickly since nipples sit at eye level. Tap the nipple to release a droplet and show them where water comes from—many birds start using it right away.
Will the bucket waterer work in freezing temperatures?
Like most poultry waterers, the water inside can freeze in very cold conditions. Many chicken keepers pair this bucket waterer with the RentACoop Thermo Bucket Belt during winter to prevent freezing and keep water flowing to the nipples.
Does the bucket design help prevent algae growth?
The closed bucket design helps keep dirt, bedding, and debris out of the water, which keeps water cleaner than open waterers. For best results, place the waterer out of direct sunlight and clean periodically to prevent algae buildup.
How many chickens can this waterer support?
With six drinking nipples or cups, and a 5-gallon capacity, this waterer typically supports 8-10 chickens comfortably, depending on climate and water consumption.

This is my first experience having chickens and all the stuff that comes with them. Now that I know how messy chickens are, I feel great about my choice of waterer. I put ours on a stack of 3 pavers to elevate it. This waterer keeps the water away from anything that would contaminate it, such as dirt, chicken poop, bugs etc. and prevents evaporation. I wasn’t sure if the girls would know how to use it since they were used to a round galvanized metal waterer. No problem at all; they figured it out right away. I clean the little cups every few days by swirling the water around with my fingers and then twisting them sideways to empty. Easy peasy! Keep an eye on the main jug, don’t wait until it’s empty to clean it. 5 gallons is a lot of water and with 5 chickens it takes a long time to drink. I put probiotics in the water and after about 2 weeks it was slimy in there, so I won’t do that again. I plan to supply another small water source with probiotics, in addition, so it is used up quickly and doesn’t have time to get yucky.
Update after about 2 months of use:
Leaks bad!! No adjustment helps. Ended up having to put a pan underneath because the water leaking makes such a mess. Also, it is a pain to fill due to the bucket not wanting to sit flat on the ground.
I was looking for a great quality water dispenser for my chickens. I heard about this company. I’m so glad I decided to purchase this item. I did feel $50 was a bit much but I was happily surprised when the product came with 3 extra cups and directions on our to make another! My chickens took to it right away. It is so nice to not have disgusting water to clean out everyday. Easy to fill. Very happy with it. And no worries my girls are being moved into their new big coop soon!
I know some people have had problems with this product, but mine has worked great! No complaints! Since the cups hang down below the bottom of the container, I followed the suggestion of another purchaser and put this unit on a concrete block, which has worked out well. The unit is easy to clean and the plug in the top makes it easy to add water each day without removing the whole top. I have found spraying the cups with water from a hose is the easiest way to get any collected dirt out. Would highly recommend and would buy it again.
Love !
We bought this needing more drinking access for our girls. Three chickens now 8 and they love it. Having the cups and nipples is great! Seems to be working nicely and they can’t roost on top of their water!
The high price of this item accounts for a sturdy bucket, well-fit lid, and the convenience of pre-drilled holes. It comes with 4 proprietary water cups that are designed to stay 3/4 full, along with an extra cup for free. Unfortunately, 2 of our cups did not stay 3/4 filled and kept overfilling, slowly dripping onto the coop floor making a muddy mess. We contacted Rentacoop directly through their website, and they immediately sent replacement cups that worked perfectly. Excellent customer service.
Edit: I realized a lot of people are complaining about leaking and other issues that I’d like to comment on. We have not had a leaking problem. You do need to tighten the cups….. also, an extra was cup was in the package when delivered. There is a spring mechanism inside the cups, I almost lost one when I was giving it a deep clean. So don’t lose that! Also the design of this waterer is to be filled with a hose through the top. The top is extremely hard to take on and off, so if you are expecting to carry a five gallon bucket back and forth to a faucet to fill up, this is not the waterer for you – just stick a hose through the hole in the top! Don’t take it on and off! That’s crazy. Why are you trying to carry 5 gallons of water anyway? Geez.
Original: This was better than expected. There is a hole in the top for easy fill-up with a hose, so I’ve run a hose out to it permanently (see photo). It also came with a triangle perching deterrent. We used a bungee to keep it in place on top of a cinder block because the force of the hose could knock it over if empty.
The drinking cups are wide enough for duck beaks, although the ducks would make a mess and they could clog the cups with debris. We used this for several months for 5 ducks and 5 chickens. We would need to fill it daily for them and sometimes pull the debris out of the cups. Ducks have gone to their permanent home, so I expect the water to last a long time and stay clean between filling for only 5 chickens.
The cups did freeze with water with a few cold spells we had at the end of winter, but no damage.
Highly recommended.
