Relatively thin Brass but seems to be "solid brass"
Some have questioned whether these are brass plated, but they are brass on the polished side and seem to be brass on the inside so I’m assuming they are “solid brass” (although not very thick). Others have noted the small openings for bulbs and I have a relatively big hand so it’s difficult to install or remove bulbs. But there are light bulb removal tools that work well enough. The smaller tools have a 1-1/2″ (approximately 4 cm) diameter spring for handling smaller bulbs and it is a bit of a stretch to handle the standard 2-1/4″ bulbs that might be preferred with this light fixture. But the spring does stretch enough to handle 2-1/4″ bulbs. If you get a bare tool with no pole extension you might prefer to get a short handle for it to make removing/installing bulbs easier. I got a 3/4″ x 12″ piece of poplar dowel rod which serves it very well.
So I installed two of these larger lights on my front porch, flanking my front door and two of these smaller lights in my backyard adjacent to each of my backyard doors. They all look very nice and were fairly easy to install (some of the mounting screws are in awkward spots to access and are blocked by the lantern). The brushed or satin nickel gives a subdued but rich look and will hopefully not pit like the brass ones I was replacing. Over the past several years I have replaced all the brass hardware in my house with brushed nickel and I must say it looks classy and updated on the gray and dark blue siding/shutters on my Victorian style home. These outdoor fixtures and my entry door lock set were the final brushed nickel pieces to complete the conversion.
The lights are very nice quality; with a nice heft in build quality and real glass panes. The hanging lantern design gives it a classy look, too. Inside a standard screw bulb fits and installs easily.
Due to the fact that I bought these online and had no visual size reference, I bought two of both the smallest size and the larger size (as noted in the attached pictures). The plan was to use the larger lights on my front stoop and the smaller ones in my backyard, but if the larger ones were too big and looked out of place on my stoop I was going to put them in my yard. Turns out the larger ones looked nicer hanging in my front; hopefully the pictures will help others visualize the size…the installed bulbs are the same in both so the difference in the size of the glass and the lantern between the two sizes can be noted. As for the backing and lantern hook, that stuff is the same size between models.
As a quick aside, I was reluctant to mix brushed nickel with the three oil-rubbed-bronze light fixtures I have on my first floor due to a fear of clashing, but the combo looks nice and according to some advice I received and some home decorating things I read, it is entirely permissible.
Overall, these outdoor lanterns are high quality and thus far seem to have been a good buy. If time goes on and they do not hold up well, I will update.
