Powerful little rig!
I nabbed this little guy to use as the brain for a homemade arcade cabinet.
Its probably a bit overkill but I wanted something I could use to play more modern games on it as opposed to just the classics.
Getting it booted up and set up was easy. It has a nice weight to it which makes it feel good quality.
I had no issues with parts not being right compared to what I bought such as lower RAM amounts or whatever. I noticed this can be an issue with other imported mini PCs while trying to make a decision.
All around it seems like a capable little unit and I’m excited to put it through its paces.
Four purchases in, and I’d absolutely buy again.
This is my fourth GMKtec mini PC, and at this point it’s safe to say I’m a fan. I’ve added the M5 Ultra to a lineup that already includes a G3 Plus, G9 NAS, and an M5 Plus. Each one has found a solid role in my setup.
The G9 runs Homelab and NAS duties 24/7 without a hitch, while the G3 Plus serves as a reliable Windows 11 machine for my wife. The M5 series (including this Ultra) is where I do most of my tinkering—Linux installs, video editing, CAD/3D printing and Home Assistant projects. It handles all of that surprisingly well for such a compact system. Kdenlive is my choice for video editing and I have spent many hours on my G5 Plus editing without any issue.
The new M5 Ultra is faster and quieter (no noticeable fan noise under load). It’s powerful enough to feel responsive under real workloads, but still efficient enough to run constantly without worry. For anyone looking to build out a small but capable home lab or just wants a flexible mini PC, GMKtec has been consistently delivering for my needs and is realistically all anyone should need for day to day computing.
I will be using the older version, the G5 Plus, to experiment with Ollama and various local AI models. Maybe not the ideal solution, but certainly enough to tinker around with.
