I was buying a new cheap crappy tent every few summers and finally got fed up. This Coleman dome tent went on sale and I’m so glad I jumped on it. This thing is so much more structurally sound and easy to assemble than anything else I have owned. Held up great in a wicked rain storm, and has enough space for myself, my tall partner, and air mattress just fine. Really happy!
The main poles are each permanently attached to a back corner of the tent, which makes setup easy. (I did it alone and without looking at any directions, but I’ve set up many tents before.)
On the other hand, the perma-attached poles make folding the tent a bit of a nusiance. Replacing a cracked pole section would require some, uh, let’s say “creative engineering”.
The tent is basically screen/mesh on three sides, with the fly providing the rainproofing and privacy. You can’t adjust the airflow by zipping/unzipping the windows except in the door. (Seems to be a current trend.) The fly has a loop at the bottom of the back so that you can pull it away from the tent and stake it for ventilation, but doesn’t have such loops on the sides. Aftermarket tent/tarp clips can fix this situation, but it’s something to be aware of.
On my tent, the casing for the pole over the vestibule area was sealed closed and had to be cut open before first use. Everything else worked as intended. Note that it has a tarp-style bottom, so no ground cloth is included: bring an additional layer of your own if you want to protect it from rocks, sticks, etc.
That said, the vestibule is a good feature. This tent has excellent head room and the nearly-vertical sides make it feel spacious. It was very cold in freezing weather (too much head room!) and I fear it might be stifling in a heat wave, but for “normal” camping weather it’s great.
We purchased the Coleman Skydome Tent with Full-Fly Weather Vestibule for a first-time family camping trip. We followed the rule of doubling your tent size for every person that will sleep in it and it did well fitting an inflatable queen mattress and a single sleeping pad. For extra room you could always go up one additional size, which is probably something we’d consider if we ever had to replace this one.
Setting up the tent took about 8-10 minutes and an additional 3-5 minutes for the rainfly. The only complaint we would have is that the rainfly traps heat and it gets really hot inside the tent during a hot summer day. Unfortunately this is something that happens with other tents as well. There are strategies to get around it, such as putting on the rainfly before sunset or only putting it on if it rains, but you’ll lose out on the privacy until then.
We liked that the inside of the tent had loops that we could thread string lights through and the door had a “window” screen. The zipper to the door will sometimes catch where the fabric overlaps to cover the zippers but it hasn’t snagged yet.
Taking down the tent is a little more tedious if your goal is to fit everything back into the bag. The rainfly needed to be spread out to fold it evenly before rolling it up and the tent needs to be folded a certain way so you can use the attached tent poles to roll the tent up.
Overall this is a good starter tent if you’re looking to get into car camping and gets the job done.
I tried three or four tents before purchasing this one (waited for a sale!), and I am so glad I finally found just what I wanted. Although I will mostly be using this alone with my dog, I really wanted a larger interior space and more headroom. This tent does not disappoint! I will only be using it for car camping, so the weight is inconsequential. Like other reviewers have mentioned, I love the spacious vestibule (see photo with border collie on beach towel for scale). Additionally, the build quality here is super in every way. I’m sure this will last me many years. I set this up by myself in about 15 minutes with no problem at all. So far, I have had it set up in my backyard for about a week. It got a little bit of rain and was fine. I now call it my “poor woman’s she-shed”! I consider this a good value for money and I like the classic unobtrusive color of the tent and the rain fly, while also appreciating the little pops of color in the blue zipper flaps and red zipper tabs/pulls. I highly recommend this product and of course everyone knows the company has been in business forever. I was really impressed with the attention to detail. Everything works exactly as it should, zippers don’t stick, potential leak points are protected, and so on. The only thing that would have made it absolutely perfect as if it came with a footprint! PS — This could technically sleep for adults, but there would not be any room in the temp for anything else. Two friendly people, a dog, and a couple of backpacks could fit pretty comfortably.
