Not for the self-conscious in public.
This solar-powered fan hat is listed in the amazon.com description twice as being beige. Mine is dark blue-gray. Maybe Amazon’s copy editor is colorblind. This is somewhat important, as if it’s supposed to keep you cool on a hot sunny day, it should be a light color. So if it really was beige, it would be better. Minus one star. This is, in actuality, a wide-brim floppy hat with 4 electric fan units mounted in the brim.
It comes with an instruction manual in many languages.
The device comes unassembled. Each fan unit is snapped into a ring-shaped plastic receptacle in the hat’s brim. The batteries had no charge in them when I received mine, but I flipped the solar switch, and the fans immediately spun into action. 4 USBc charging cables are provided to charge the batteries. Each fan unit has no connection to the others. Each fan must be charged individually. Each fan has 3 speeds, again selected individually. If the sun is out and high, the batteries aren’t necessary. The solar units do not charge the batteries. They only run the fans. If you’re running the fans on battery power, each must be turned on and off individually, as no fan knows what any of the other are doing. The fans can be aimed up or down to a limited extent.
The hat has an elastic drawstring so the one-size-fits-all can be adjusted to actually fit all. And there’s an under-chin string. The top of the hat has a mesh fabric ventilated area similar to many floppy hats.
I was immediately aware of its weight when I first pit it on, but I got used to it in a few minutes.
Amazon.com’s description says the hat is waterproof, and the fabric probably is. But I doubt the fan mechanisms are.
So how well does it work? I’m surprised at the amount of air it moves, but for me, only when the fans are at their highness setting. It is effective. Your mileage may vary. It’s really nutty-looking, and as I’m self-conscious, I don’t wear it unless I will not be seen by anybody. But there is something to it. I think it would be more efficient if it really were beige.
Best Hat Ever!!!!
I work at costco pushing carts all day in the hot sun, and this keeps me cool and collected when I’m out there. When it becomes night time at costco, i simply turn it into battery mode. The clips at first were a little complicated and one for the fans kept dropping. Other than that, its a great hat. Im definitely buying another one.
Cool gear for outdoor enthusiasts
I ordered this solar fan hat mostly out of curiosity but honestly, it works really well for my daily gardening routine.
The cooling effect is really unexpected. The four built-in fans actually move a noticeable amount of air, there are three settings and I mostly use the higher settings. On a hot day, whether I’m walking, doing yard work, or just out in the sun, it definitely helps keep my head from overheating. The top of the hat is of mesh fabric so it keeps your head well ventilated. It’s not like air conditioning, but it does carry the heat away from your body to keeps you cool.
There are two power options, one is the battery powered mode and the other is the solar powered mode. The solar panels are built-in on top of each fan. I find the battery powered mode works best, they lasts a long time, while the solar mode works well in direct sunlight but won’t work if you are in the shade. Just keep in mind the solar panel doesn’t charge the batteries, it only powers the fans. You still need to charge the batteries using the provided USB cables.
The hat is lightweight and the top is breathable. The brim is wide. The fit is adjustable and comfortable, though with the fans built in, it’s a bit bulkier than a regular hat.
Overall, it’s a clever and functional piece of gear. If you spend a lot of time outdoors in the heat, gardening, fishing, hiking, it’s definitely worth considering.
