If you've ever used a tap or die you know what to expect, but you might still be surprised
Tap & die sets are functional tools that you just hope will work without drama, so I’ll let others take the glamor shots. Like a lot of people I have a few incomplete tap & die sets because despite the hope there has been drama in the form of threads that aren’t great and (more often) broken taps.
I haven’t had this set long enough to drop, lose, break or wear anything out yet, so to test it I skipped the easy stuff and went to the stuff that tools don’t like in the form of threaded 300 series stainless steel rod and heat treated 6000 series aluminum, both without cutting oil. I did follow the golden rule of backing out to clear chips once per revolution and used the appropriate material & drill size for the threads I chose to make for this test. I’m not a monster. Besides, I really like these and want to use them for a very long time.

To my pleasant surprise the tap cut very nice threads in the stainless rod pretty easily. No galling or tearout on any of the threads. The hex shape of the die might have helped since it prevents the die slipping in the holder. Not sure on that. The tap made clean threads as well. Without any dressing afterward the parts fit together perfectly (I did thread the hole crooked, but it’s just a test).
Maybe the titanium nitride coating helped the threading or maybe it’ll just keep them sharper longer. I’m a fan of it either way.
What I like most about the kit (other than that it cuts threads well) is the jumbo sizes included and the fact that it has two different sizes for the holders. Each of these are rare in a small-ist kit like this, but both in one is new to me.
A problem I have with most tap wrenches is that no matter how snugly you tighten the, they still loosen as soon as they’re turned. This one didn’t do that, so it’s already better. I removed the fixed handles just to see how easily they’d come loos on their own. They were really snug and didn’t wobble at all, so I think they’ll stay put.
The case is really nice. Having actual hinged latches like a proper toolbox is nice to see. Most have molded-in “living” hinges that always wear out. The closest thing to a complaint I could think of, however minor it is, would be that adding a dimple to each of the sockets holding the dies would make pulling them out of the case easier. That’s it. This is a really nice set, and will replace the other taps & dies I have been using.
The most complete tap and die set I've seen!
Wow, what an awesome tap and die set! KJE really makes some nice tools and this is no exception. The plastic case is really nice and holds all of the pieces very well. Before I picked this up I had some smaller tap and die sets that were not as complete and didn’t have the leverage of this kit. They included all of the pieces that you could possibly need, even a thread cleaner and small screwdriver! I’m very impressed with this tool kit, overall a great buy!
Comprehensive set at a good price
If you have to do any thread cutting or hole tapping, this set will accomplish it. I has, as I can tell, every size thread you could need for SAE and metric. The dies and taps are hardened and have clean sharp cutting threads. The case holds everything in place cleanly and allows for easy identification. The case snaps have actual hinges and should last a long time. Overall this is a quality set and at a good price as well. I am happy with the order.
Complete with all sizes
This is an excellent and complete set for both SAE and Metric sizes. It’s very easy to use, just remember to keep the cutting surfaces well-oiled while cutting. Even if you don’t think you need this, if you’re a DIYer and enjoy solving mechanical problems, you need a tap and die set. I recently modified a lawn mower part when the new bagger kit wouldn’t stay on. I threaded an attachment so I could secure it with a nut — it saved me time and money! Now, I don’t worry about the bagger falling off.
The set is durable and effective for cutting threads. The versatility of having both SAE and Metric sizes is important because while most of my tools are metric, I occasionally need SAE. This kit is a great value, as you’d easily spend more buying the taps and dies separately.
