What is carbon monoxide and why is a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm essential for homes and apartments?
CO is a colorless, odorless gas from fuel‑burning appliances. Build‑up can occur from faulty furnaces, blocked vents, or running vehicles. This alarm is not recommended for travel.
Where should a CO detector be installed on the wall?
Carbon monoxide (CO) evenly disperses in the air. Therefore, a CO detector can be installed anywhere on the wall.
How many carbon monoxide alarms do I need in my home?
Experts recommend installing a detector on every floor, including the basement, and in or near each sleeping area, ensuring full‑home coverage and faster detection no matter where a leak occurs.
What should I do if my CO alarm goes off?
If the alarm sounds, evacuate to fresh air immediately and call 911. Do not silence the alarm or try to locate the source yourself; professionals should inspect for leaks or faulty appliances.
Do CO alarms expire, and how long do they last?
Yes, carbon monoxide alarms diminish over time and should be replaced every 10 years. Check the manufacturer's replacement guidelines. Kidde CO alarms offer 10 years of 24/7 detection.

Great choice for a low maintenance CO2 detecto
Carbon monoxide (CO) is often called the “silent killer” because it is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. A reliable detector is a non-negotiable safety requirement for any home or office. The Kidde Carbon Monoxide Detector offers a “set it and forget it” approach to safety with several professional-grade features.
Key Features
10-Year Sealed Lithium Battery: The standout feature is the long-term power supply. Unlike older models that require annual battery swaps, this unit is designed to last a full decade.
LED Status Indicators: The face of the device includes color-coded LEDs (typically Green for power, Amber for fault/end-of-life, and Red for alarm) providing a quick visual confirmation of the unit’s health.
85 dB Audible Alarm: In the event of a CO leak, the 85-decibel siren is loud enough to wake sleepers or be heard through closed doors, meeting standard safety regulations.
Self-Testing Capability: The unit features a prominent Test/Silence button to ensure the circuitry and siren are functioning correctly.
The Pros
Maintenance-Free: The 10-year battery eliminates the annoying “low battery” chirps in the middle of the night for the lifespan of the sensor.
Compact Design: It features a clean, unobtrusive aesthetic that blends well with most wall or ceiling textures.
Ease of Installation: Since it is battery-powered, no wiring is required. It can be mounted easily with a simple bracket or even placed on a high shelf.
End-of-Life Warning: The device is programmed to signal when the 10-year mark is reached, ensuring you know exactly when the sensor itself has expired and needs replacement.
The Cons
Non-Replaceable Battery: Once the 10 years are up, the entire unit must be recycled and replaced. You cannot simply put in a new battery.
Basic Interface: It lacks a digital display (ppm readout) found on more expensive models, which can tell you the exact concentration of CO in the air.
Final Verdict
The Kidde Carbon Monoxide Detector is an excellent choice for those who prioritize reliability and low maintenance. It provides the essential protection needed without the hassle of frequent battery changes. I suppose that if I never hear the alarm it will be a good thing but that would be the only way I know it is working.
Nice and convenient basic model (COB10). Tasteful update to the previous generation.
I got the model “COB10” Gen 5, which is the most basic built-in-battery model. It’s nice and simple. It has no informative display; just a small 2-color LED (green = good; red = alarm). But this unit makes up for that in simplicity, small design, and my favorite feature: It won’t do the “low-battery” chirps at night time (It has light sensor — but don’t worry, regular alarms aren’t affected by the low-light “night” mode.)
FYI: Not really a con or danger, but FYI, the base model COB10 does not monitor or alert for “Low level — between 31 and 50 PPM,” which is a level for health concern, not an immediate danger (per its user manual). So this is an alarm-device, not a health-monitoring device.
NOTE: As with some other “10-year battery” devices, this has a MANDATORY end-of-life after 10 years. It seems to have a built-in timer that will force an end-of-life chirp, even if the battery is still good (my last CO detector did that). They imply it’s a safety feature because the CO sensor itself becomes less reliable. But it’s still a waste that it becomes plastic and lithium-battery garbage, with no easy recycle options.
SIZE: 5″ W x 2.75″ H x 1.5″ D (127mm W x 70mm H x 38mm D).
PROS:
+ Prevents nuisance “low-battery” chirps during night time (has a light sensor). NICE!
+ Smaller, and more stylish than the rectangular previous generation (which I owned several).
+ Has tiny “feet” so it can stand upright on a shelf. OR it can also be wall-mounted.
+ Pressing “Hush” silence button also re-tests the air. High levels will result in another alarm “within 6 minutes.”
+ 10-year battery is nice, affordable and convenient (I hope it lasts that long).
CONS:
— Spendy price, based on the currently marked at $46 USD. I can get a combo smoke+CO for less.
— Mandatory end-of-life after 10 years.
