I ordered this mat primarily for motorcycle oil changing and the messy business of chain lubricating. In addition to trapping oil spills, it provides a soft surface when I need to lay on the floor to reach the oil drain plug. The rubber side is very grippy and the felt side has a short, tight weave.
I measured the thickness of the mat to be a little less than 0.100 inch. It’s flexible and lays flat. The product page states that it is able to be cut and the tight weave seems like it would not fray but I haven’t cut it.
It’s so easy for spilled oil to run off the side of something like plastic sheeting, but this mat provides the felt that traps the oil from further running anywhere. It seems like its best use is to catch small daily oil drips under a car (or motorcycle) rather than bigger spills that may occur when changing oil, but it’s still a better reusable solution than what I had been using, cardboard, for those oil changes.
It seems like the best way to keep oil off of a garage floor, but it will accumulate all those spills in the felt until it is cleaned. I haven’t yet tried cleaning it but I expect it will not be easy and will need a strong water soluble degreaser to get the job done. I can only hope that the felt doesn’t detach from scrubbing.
I got the 29″ x 36″ size which is just right for my motorcycle. It also seems like it would work nicely to trap any antifreeze drips if I need to drain the car radiator. Overall, I think it’s a great invention. I wish I had it years ago.
