Perfect size for many breeds of small birds!
There’s a lot to like about these wren (or other small birds) houses:
< The opening is 1-1/8 inches, just as it should be for wrens, chickadees, etcetera. < The chain (included, and already attached) is a good size for hanging this in a bush, against a wall, or just about anywhere. The loop size is pretty much self-adjusting (will open wide for putting a branch through, and closes around that branch to keep it steady. < the bottom edge is just right for using to prop up on a metal-rack shelf (we will be surrounding this wren house with potted plants of various kinds to give the wren a feel of being hidden - if temps ever break!) < it has a trap door to make cleaning it out between broods easy. < the "living space" is just about right for small birds to build their nests into (the ends are 4 x 4 inches, with an inside length of about 7 inches). < the entry hole is 1.25 inches below the peak of the inside of the house. < there is a lot of "vent space" to allow cooler air to flow through (both at the sides and at the top). But not everything is perfect: < the metal "protection ring" around the entry hole is relatively sharp (but this may not keep a bird from using it). < the construction is sloppy (on at least one of the four we got, there is a gap between parts that will allow rain to get in the house -- I will fill this with wood putty, so it's not a big deal, but it does show lack of attention to details during manufacturing) < the trap door enclosure latch does not fit tightly, a casual touch of it can allow it to unlatch (I'll tape mine shut over the latch, so it's not a big deal, but again, attention to details). < it is not made of weather resistant wood so it will fall apart after a few seasons (if it was made of cedar, it would be much more weather resistant than the pine it's made out of). Over all, they are a great start to a collection of houses to hang for the smaller birds that our bird feeders attract year round. The only drawback is that if the birds winter in these houses, the venting may be too much, letting in more cold wind than the birds would like -- but still warmer than a nest out in the open! I would actually give these 5 stars but for the leaky roof problem!
