Fun Retro Boombox with Plenty of Playback Options
I like that this boombox brings together so many ways to listen in one compact unit. Being able to play CDs, cassettes, radio, USB, and SD cards makes it feel versatile and practical, especially for anyone who still enjoys older media but wants a few modern conveniences too. I also like the portable design, remote control, backlit display, and the option to use either wall power or batteries, which makes it easy to use around the house or take outside.
For me, the main drawback is that the sound seems more decent than impressive, so I would see this more as a fun all-in-one nostalgic player than a high-end audio system. A few control and usability quirks also keep it from feeling perfect. Even so, I think it offers a lot of value for someone who wants a retro-style boombox with lots of format support. My rating: 4 out of 5 stars.
Retro cool in a portable package
This boombox is just like the one my friend had in 1995, in that it spins your CDs, it plays your tapes, it allows you to tune into you favorite radio station, and as an added bonus now it can play MP3s (via an SD card) and charge your phone. It still takes 6 D-cell batteries to run it if you don’t plug it in (which you can’t do if you’re going to spin Hootie and the Blowfish while you’re sunbathing on the quad, which is exactly what we used my friend’s boombox for in 1995), but it lasts a pretty good amount of time on battery power.
This performed just as I expected – I did have to dig up a cassette tape to try out that feature, but we found one! The stop button stuck a little bit until I used it a few times, but otherwise the tape player worked just as expected, as did the CD player. I had an SD card with MP3s on it from a now-long-ago, but still later-than-the-1990s era of music players, and they loaded and played just fine. There are a lot of features in this little package, and it’s very cute, with a cute little handle that makes it extra-portable.
So for those who are just experiencing audio equipment like this for the first time, let me just say: we did not own these back in the 80s and 90s because they produced great sound; we owned them because we needed a way to blast our tunes with us wherever we went. And our tunes were on cassette and CD, so as long as the boombox had enough volume, whether or not the sound was crisp or precise didn’t really matter. And the sound quality is…not great. Especially now that I’ve gotten used to listening to FLACs on high-end stereo equipment. But this thing is LOUD and will be great for parties at the lake this summer.
One great thing about this? You can plug your phone in it to charge it, but it does NOT have Bluetooth. If you want to leave your phone at home and do a digital detox, but still have tunes with you? This boombox will let you do that. So sound quality aside, the fact that they’re making these, and allowing people unplug from the Matrix for awhile and still kick it old-school to dope beats, warrants 5 stars from me.
