How do you change the 2-in-1 battery clamps into ring leads?
There is a screw inside the handle of each battery clamp. Unscrew and remove the battery clamps. Once the clamps are removed, you’ll have ring leads you can attach to your battery terminals.
Will the battery charger work with SAE quick-connects?
No, the SC1681 charger uses a new Schumacher-developed quick-connect that is dust and water resistant, unlike SAE quick-connects. However, Schumacher sells a range of accessories based on the new Schumacher quick-connect that includes an SAE adapter.
How do I use the push-to-start feature for batteries under 1 volt?
Connect the clamps to the battery and then plug the charger into an AC outlet. Next, use the Select Mode button to choose the battery’s voltage and type. If the charger doesn’t detect your battery, press and hold the Select Mode button for 3 seconds.

Rugged and simple, just plug it in and connect the clamps.
This was surprisingly quick to put to use. It connected and within a couple of seconds was able to determine what type of battery and charge level. It does have manual override settings. Functioned perfectly in maintaining my 12V car battery – extends battery life and is safe to use.
Unit is very compact so you could just leave the hood cracked with this thing under it if you wanted to. It’s excellent value compared to competitors, but from a name brand known for their battery tools.
Excellent Car Battery Charger/Maintaine
I’ve been using the Schumacher SC1681 3in1 charger/maintainer for a few weeks now and it’s honestly impressed me. It charges, maintains, and even reconditions batteries with its desulfation mode — I actually brought an older battery back from the brink and saved myself a replacement.
What I like:
Real allinone: charges, maintains, reconditions — everything I need in one compact easy to use unit.
Super versatile: works on 6V and 12V systems and handles wet, gel, AGM, calcium, deepcycle, and even LiFePO4. Use it on cars, bikes, mowers, boats — whatever you throw at it.
Clever clamps: Schumacher’s Flex Eyelet setup lets you quickly convert clamps to ring terminals, and the lowprofile clamps reach tight posts without wrestling.
Handy safety/features: pushtostart gets batteries under 1V going, and reversepolarity protection gives me peace of mind when I’m working fast.
Flexible mounting: I mounted it to the bench, but the folding hook is great if you want it out of the way.
Cable reach: 6ft power cord and 7ft booster cables are long enough for typical engine bays.
A couple of notes:
It’s obviously AC powered, so you’ll need an outlet — great for the garage but not for remote jobs.
At 3A it’s not a rapid charger for huge batteries, but it’s perfect for maintenance and reviving neglected batteries.
Bottom line: compact, well thoughtout, and reliable — a great addition to my garage gear. Would highly recommend.
Feature-rich battery charger works well but with major drawback for powersports consumers
This is an impressive 3 amp charger/maintainer that should service multiple battery types well (6v, 12v, AGM, or Lead Acid). Thus far I’ve been using it as a maintainer only, and it’s plenty overkill for my application. The price, power, and features make this a good choice on paper. The built-in hanger is a clever and very useful design element (see photo) for those of us with limited or messy garages and benches. That said, I do have a few gripes, one of which will be a dealbreaker to some.
The major complaint is that the connection to the lead is not the typical SAE plug most chargers/maintainers use. I have several motorcycles with ring-style SAE connectors permanently installed that I can easily plug into multiple chargers that I own of various brands. This connector is proprietary. The clamps can be converted to ring style (this isn’t documented in the minimalist included instructions, but you can see it on the Amazon listing); you’d have to purchase extra for permanent mounting since they are proprietary, however.
Also, the operating instructions and/or a legend of symbols (indicator lights) should be printed on the device itself. The paper instruction booklet is quite brief A typical end user is unlikely to remember he has to hold down a button for 3 seconds to activate a mode. The indicator lights are not as legible in real life as they are in the photos accompanying the Amazon ad.
In brief, a very good device but if you are already using SAE connectors with existing chargers/maintainers/tenders I’d recommend a different brand.
Great quality battery tender.
Great quality charger/tender that’s easy to use, has a good display, performs as it should, and it’s a fraction of the cost of the more expensive competitors. It’s a win in all categories.
I’ve got a lot of tenders in use at my place, and I’m not proud to admit that I just got too lazy to go and rotate them around during the winter. I’ve used tenders for years, and currently have 7 in use around my place. Two of these are now Schumachers. They’ve been great and I very much recommend them.
So far this season, I’ve used the Schumacher tenders on a 850 Polaris Sportsman quad that I use for plowing, as well as a polaris general xp4 1000 and a Triumph Tiger RE 1200, both for maintaining. The chargers have been compatible with them all and has effectively maintained the charge of the involved batteries. I’ve now dedicated this 3A one to my XP 1000, and it’s maintained it for weeks of temps that fluctuated from single digits to high 50’s. I’ve only used the side by side twice and it fired up immediately both times.
The display panel is easy to read and understand, with pertinent info displayed. The charging cables have good reach and the clips are good quality.
My only complaint is that I’m surprised the charger didn’t include a quick connect plug. All of the tenders I’ve had in recent years have come with them, so it caught me off guard. I included a pic of what I’m referring to, because one of my vehicles is specifically equipped for this connection. Fortunately I’ve got enough vehicles to where it didn’t matter to me and the tender is getting all the use it can handle.
I’m really a fan of this Schumaker brand and recommend it. After my positive experience with them, I confidently bought a Schumacher tender for my son as one of his Christmas presents.
