A Pocket Full of Childhood Memories
Growing up on NES and SNES, I didn’t expect a tiny handheld to bring back this much nostalgia. The R36S is a compact, palm-sized device with a translucent red shell that lets you see the circuitry inside, a nice touch that gives it a fun retro-tech look. The 3.5-inch IPS screen runs at 640×480 and is bright and sharp, which makes those old pixel art games look great. Under the hood it runs a quad-core ARM processor with 1GB of RAM on an open source Linux system, and it comes loaded with a 64GB SD card carrying countless games across more than a dozen emulators covering everything from Atari and NES all the way through SNES, Sega Genesis, Game Boy Advance, and PS1. The buttons and D-pad feel solid for the price, not premium, but responsive and comfortable for shorter sessions. The form factor is on the compact side so larger hands may find it a bit cramped for marathon play, but for gaming in short bursts it is perfect. Battery life sits around 5 to 6 hours on a charge, which is more than enough for travel or a long car ride. It charges via USB-C on the left port and there is a second USB-C OTG port on the right for accessories.
The sweet spot for this device is anything up to and including PS1, where performance is smooth and reliable. N64 and PSP are more of a mixed bag depending on the title, so go in with realistic expectations on those. Where it really shines is giving you more classic games than you could reasonably get through in months, and there is something special about rediscovering old favourites you have not thought about in years. I have been playing through some of my old RPG favourites and my nephew has been glued to it discovering games I grew up with, which has been a blast. It is not the most beginner-friendly device since navigating emulators takes a bit of getting used to, but for anyone who remembers these games fondly or wants to share them with a younger generation, this little handheld is well worth it.
Very nice and responsive R36S console with lots of games
I’m actually quite surprised on how good this device is overall! I’ve had retro like consoles before but lacking in options which this one does have. This console being R36S has a save feature that I was looking for! It definitely works well when going back to games with a save.
Now, I’m not sure whether this is a true R36S as I’m not too confident in fiddling with the battery. This does come with ArkOS with proper menus and settings that makes me think it’s not a clone. Has two chips at the back as well.
Apart from that, this console has a good amount of games in its stock card. Surprised with some of thenoptions actually working. Controls can be iffy at some emulators since some have two screens but you can use the back controls to switch screens for that emulator. The instruction tells you a bit but not all the controls. Getting other games in this does require work using your laptop though. You do get A LOT of options that aren’t just the same genre.
The console itself feels sturdy and durable in that I don’t feel like the buttons are cheap or too loose from their sockets. When pressing on the buttons, they respond well. The screen has a clear and crisp image alongside a loud but decent audio. However, depending on thr emulator, this does get a bit warm and the audio has this weird static white noise evident especially when you turn down the volume. Unsure as to what it is.
Overall though, this is a really good console to play around with when tavelling or waiting for something!
Awesome console.
It’s true. If you spend more on a handheld it will come with more choices for you to mess with. Do yourself a favor and buy the best affordable device that turns your phone into a console. So, you will never put it down.
Fun handheld gaming console with open source Linux suppo
I have been messing around with this handheld for a few days, and it is a surprisingly fun device for such a low price. The library of games is huge, and it emulates everything up to the original PlayStation very effectively. While it technically supports N64 and Dreamcast, the performance on those systems is a bit lacking, so it is better to stick to the older classics if you want a smooth experience. The build quality is solid and feels comparable to my Miyoo Mini Plus, which is impressive for a budget unit.
The real standout feature for me is the port support, as being able to play Stardew Valley, Half Life, and TMNT Shredder’s Revenge on a portable screen is fantastic. The display quality is very good, offering bright and vibrant colours that make old school graphics look sharp. It comes preloaded with plenty of titles, although I would probably curate the list and replace a few with my own favourites. It charges up quickly and I have been getting about four hours of battery life, which is perfect for killing time without being tethered to a wall.
This handheld is definitely geared toward the tinkerer rather than a casual user. It is an open source Linux device, which means you can reflash the SD card to run different operating systems like ArkOS or Rocknix if you enjoy that kind of thing. While it is Wi-Fi compatible with a USB dongle, I find it much easier to just plug in an Ethernet cable to run updates and then disconnect it. This seems to be a genuine R36S with the Screen Type 4, so the community support is quite good if you are willing to do a little research.
My only complaints are that the shoulder buttons are quite loud and the D-pad is a little stiff out of the box. I managed to fix the D-pad by opening the case and loosening the screws by about half a turn, which made it feel much more responsive. It is a great value overall, but keep in mind that a kid could easily mess up the software if they start digging through the system settings. Luckily, you can always just reflash the card to get back to square one if things go sideways.
This thing is PHENOMENAL!
TL;DR: 20,000 games emulating multiple platforms in a hand-held device for under $50 CAD? What are you waiting for?!
I’ve loved video games since we got one of the very first consoles when I was a kid (a 1977 Binatone TV Master), every game was a variation of Pong but it was incredible fun and we’d play on it for hours. After that I’d waste 10 pence of my pocket money on Space Invaders and other arcade games. Eventually, games got better, home computers became a thing (which led to my career as a programmer), and we eventually got hand-held devices – when I was dating my wife we’d link our Game Boys together to play Tetris against each other! By the time our own kids were at school there were Xboxes, color Game-Boy DS and other devices.
In that half-a-century of gaming there have been some fantastic games where the gameplay was everything, making them fun to pick up and play without needing you to dedicate hours to learning them. Even if they’re not a “hard-core gamer” everyone has a favourite game – my wife loves Frogger and Arkanoid.
Whatever game you loved, there’s a very good chance it’s on here, often multiple variations of it from the different platforms. Heck, it even has ye-olde Pong and Space Invaders allowing me to relive my youth!
Whether you’re a giant kid like me, who enjoys some nostalgia gaming, or a new kid discovering these games for the first time, you’re going to love this. It’s great value, the screen is bright and colorful and it’s small and light to take anywhere – it’s a proper hand-held, not like the huge Steam Deck. But best of all you’ll always have new games to discover – if you played a different game every day it would take you another half-century to play all 20,000! If anything, it’s almost overwhelming, but you can save your favourites to get to them quickly.
Out of the box it’s very light on instructions but there are lots of online resources for this popular platform to teach you the basics and how to get the best from it. My only complaint is that the LED on the front is pretty bright if you’re using it at night and would have been better on the side instead of the front, but I’m sure there is an option or a mod somewhere to turn it off and if not you can get little black stickers to cover them up. Battery life has been great so far.
Overall I highly recommend this and think it is a no-brainer purchase for the price. Any kid will absolutely love it. My wife thinks this will make a good present for one of our friends kids – but not this one, this one is mine now!
Not sure how to replace SD card; it's partitioned); looks like can replace some games
1) a) Takes about 2 mins 30 secs to boot up.
1) b) At one point there was a black screen displayed for about 20 seconds. I thought something was wrong.
2) a) When in a game, press Select + Start twice at the same time to exit out and back to the menu.
2) b) I saw at least in one system that I only had to press once. I forget which system.
3) a) The 64GB micro SD card is some no name card.
3) b) I don’t know how to make a back up because the micro SD card is partitioned. As in, the card is split into 2 drives.
3) c) One drive has all of the games. It looks like you can replace some of them. I didn’t try.
4) a) I don’t see a way to input or use cheat codes.
4) b) It would have been nice to be able to use cheat codes because a lot of these older games are pretty hard.
5) Some systems where the controller only has a dpad (such as SNES) will allow you to use the dpad or the analog stick (left thumbstick).
6) I didn’t see a way to use save states. Most emulators on your PC has these. So, I was hoping this would be an option.
7) a) There are 2 x USB-C ports.
7) b) The left USB-C port is used to charge the system.
7) c) The instructions says that the right USB-C port is an OTG port. I’m guessing you can plug in a flash drive or another micro SD card but I didn’t try.
7) d) I don’t know if you can use the right USB-C port to connect to your PC or not. I didn’t try but it doesn’t sound like it.
8) a) The system will charge using a USB-C charger (using a USB-C to USB-C cable).
8) b) A short USB-A to USB-C cable is included. The length looks to be 6″.
8) a) There is 1 x TPU screen protector included.
8) b) If you mess it up then I don’t know if you can buy more.
9) a) The screen is really bright and vibrant.
9) b) By default, the brightness is set to 100%.
9) c) Press the start button when in the menu to bring up the options/setup area.
9) d) I changed the brightness to be 35% while using indoors and in the evening.
9) e) While playing a game, I did not see a way to get back to the setup area to change the brightness.
10) The speakers are very clear and can get very loud.
11) There are some PS1 games. I only tried one and it played well. I didn’t have any issues.
12) There is no carrying case included.
I can definitely recommend this portable game system. I just wish I was able to replace the micro SD card with a larger one.
