Compact, Light, and Unique
The best binocs are the ones you enjoy using—and have with you—when you need them.
Toward that end: compact and light are King and Queen—if only because it increases the likelihood that you’ll be willing to carry them around and use them in the first place.
The 21-25mm objective lens class of binoculars is where this “monarchy” resides. They are typically characterized by two no-frills tubes—each hinged to a focus bridge plate—that fold into a very compact package.
The Pentax Papilio binocs trade some compactness/lightness for additional features (see image). Weight difference: 243g (Alpen Wings ED 10×25) versus 293g (Pentax Papilio). The Alpen Wings binocs have metal tubes (premium feel) but a very plasticky feeling focus bridge plate. The Pentax Papilio binocs are injection-molded engineering plastic with a thin coating to give it a more premium rubberized feel. It is this thin coating that will likely wear out before anything else (such as the plastic gearing). Neither binocs are rugged or designed to be dropped (with the twist-up eye cups being particularly sensitive to damage).
The Pentax Papilio binocs offer four unique features compared to others in the 21-25mm class:
1. Single-hinged eyepieces (easier to collimate than typical double-hinged designs).
2. The ability to focus on objects that are very close.
3. 6.5x magnification (while most are 8x or 10x).
4. A tripod socket.
The smaller magnification and tripod socket clearly prioritize image stabilization and long viewing times over optical reach. My only gripe is that the latter is molded into the plastic chassis and not a metal insert. But no other binocs in this class even offer a tripod socket, so I’m not going to ding the implementation.
If you want the lightest and most compact binocs—go with a more traditional two-hinged design. If you’re willing to sacrifice a degree of lightness/compactness for the unique features the Pentax Papilio binocs offer, then you likely won’t be disappointed.
