Product description

Nicely Designed & Made, Good Mounting Options, Potentially Other Uses Besides Infant Monitoring
As it might not be immediately obvious, this device acts like a typical ‘Wireless CarPlay Adapter’; it plugs into your car’s wired CarPlay USB port and pretends to be a phone to your car’s head unit. Your phone then connects to this device wirelessly and it relays the CarPlay experience, as if using the phone directly.
However the party piece of this kit is that it includes a wireless (but still USB-powered) camera unit that you can position anywhere in the car. The video feed from that camera unit can then be superimposed over the normal CarPlay display output.
The unit adds various on-screen options to position an adjust this. However like many such units that superimpose themselves over the standard CarPlay UI, the integration is somewhat awkward and clunky; particularly on a tiny low-resolution head unit display like mine.
That’s more of a limitation of CarPlay (and Android Auto) than this device. Note that this is not a dual-mode CP/AA unit like most I’ve tested; it only works with CarPlay and Apple devices.
It does function flawlessly; in the sense that the wireless camera signal carries the video reliably and with very little latency. Both the CarPlay and camera connection was fast and reliable.
Mounting options are good too; the bunge strap will work with virtually any headrest, while the pole clamp provides a much more secure and neater option if you car has suitably designed headrests.
Camera quality is decent; if not outstanding. Certainly good enough for purpose. Note that the decorative ‘bird’ face is a silicone cover can be removed, leaving a much plainer design (if you’re bothered by that).
I do have to question if this is an over-engineered solution to a simple problem, since you can get car seat mirrors for virtually nothing. I would suggest that this only really makes sense in vehicles where such a mirror isn’t practical.
Alternatively, there’s no reason why you couldn’t mount this pointing out of the rear window (for reverse parking or towing monitoring), which seems like a better use case.
This is 110 at the time of writing (after a 30 voucher). Since wireless AA/CP adapters are now commonly available for 30 or less, you’re effectively paying 80-110 for the camera functionality.
I’m not sure it’s worth that, but I can’t fault the product for doing everything it claims to; and being quite unique in the marketplace at the same time.
Peace of Mind on the Go with Real-Time Baby Monitoring
The OTTOCAST Cabin Care Baby Camera is a practical solution for parents who want to keep an eye on little ones while driving. Featuring 1080P HD resolution and night vision, it ensures clear visibility of the rear seat at any time of day. The 150 wide-angle lens captures a broad view, reducing blind spots and giving a comprehensive look at your child’s activities. It works seamlessly with a wireless CarPlay adapter, allowing real-time monitoring on your car’s display for convenience and safety. Installation is straightforward, and the camera is compact enough not to obstruct the driver’s view. Overall, this baby car camera combines high-quality video, ease of use, and peace of mind, making it an essential accessory for family car trips.
Brilliant Gift for Parents with Kids
I gave this as a gift for a friend who has a 1-year-old baby.
He said it has been a complete game changer for driving with a toddler in the back seat. Being able to see live rear-seat footage directly on the car’s screen without having to turn around makes a huge difference (but you need Apple CarPlay on your car’s infotainment). It gives real peace of mind, especially on longer drives or when the baby falls quiet and you’re not sure what’s going on.
The camera quality is very clear — the 1080P resolution and wide-angle view cover the whole rear seat area properly. He also said the image remains stable and visible even in different lighting conditions, including evening drives.
The wireless CarPlay feature was another big plus for him. He liked that it was plug-and-play with no complicated setup. Once connected, it auto reconnects quickly and works seamlessly through the car’s original screen and controls.
Installation was straightforward as well. The headrest mounting feels secure and doesn’t look messy or intrusive inside the car.
Overall, he’s genuinely impressed and said it’s one of the most useful car accessories he had. If you’re looking for something practical, this is a very good option.
Digital age of mirrors!
This device is a great technical product for being able to watch over your little one in the backseat whilst you’re driving. The most useful case for this, is for the under 3 year olds, whereby because of their rear facing nature, you can’t see their face or even if they’re awake easily so you typically need a headrest mirror attached and perfectly angled to be able to see this from your car mirror with reflective angles. This product simplifies this with simplicity and offers a live camera view on things that integrates with an Apple CarPlay setup so you have a live video stream whilst looking forwards, even in split screen mode next to your satellite navigation maps. The downside is it only works with Apple devices but works efficiently with a very straightforward setup by simply flipping the camera to a headrest and connecting up to your phone. It’s versatile for 3 row cars to work just as usefully to see why they’re bickering as they get a bit older too or likewise a pet. The wider angle camera offers a full colour HD image projected forwards and is effective even in the dark. It’s powered by a USB-A cable that is provided although I feel an integrated battery would be more useful in a car setup. It’s definitely practical for what it achieves and simplifies a considerable problem, however for me it’s very expensive versus the more manual route an the limitations it still has. That said, it nicely doubles up on the ability to make your CarPlay wireless and is certainly effective at what it sets out to do, so it’s a recommendation nonetheless if you can justify the price tag!
If you are not familiar with Amazon Vine, it is basically Amazon trading free* products for honest reviews. You see a lot of Vine reviews that are cookie cutter and based on templates. I aim to make my reviews honest and non-cookie cutter (other than this intro and disclaimer).
* These items are not actually free as Vine members pay income tax on the items they receive. Therefore, I will never order something from Vine unless I actually intend to use it. I think this is important for readers to understand because it means I will never order an item just to provide a fake five star review to a company. If I review something as good, it means I actually enjoyed using it or it fills its intended purpose correctly. Items that don’t meet my expectations will be reviewed accordingly.
Why I ordered this item: I have a two-year-old and a four-year-old, and I spend a lot of time checking the back seat while driving. I wanted something that would let me monitor them on my car’s screen without adding clutter to my dashboard or having to glance in a mirror constantly.
Likes:
* The 1080P image is crisp and detailed. I can see my kids’ facial expressions and what they’re holding, even in bright sunlight. The night vision kicks in when I drive after dark and I get a clear view without any of that creepy red glow that other cameras use.
* Installation took about three minutes. I strapped the camera to the back of the front passenger seat headrest, plugged it into the USB port near the floor, and it connected to my CarPlay immediately. No app to download, no complicated pairing process.
* The 150-degree field of view captures both car seats without me having to adjust anything. When my kids unbuckle or lean over, I still see everything.
* The wireless CarPlay adapter is useful. Before this, I was using a lightning cable to my phone for navigation and music, which meant one less USB port available and one more cable running across my dashboard. Now I just tap to connect and my maps and Spotify both work without the cord.
* The feed appears on my car’s screen with minimal lag. I can see what’s happening in real time without the kind of delay that would make it useless.
No likes:
* This only works with iPhone and Apple CarPlay. My wife has an Android phone and can’t use it
Would I pay full price for this product: Yes
Final thoughts: This camera is great! I can keep my eyes on the road and still watch my kids in the back seat.
This is a review for the Ottocast Apple CarPlay cabin care, it’s a genius idea that eliminates a baby mirror or a wired external camera monitor. It exceeded expectations in that it’s essentially wireless and does not require you to mount any additional camera to your dashboard. You get full wireless Apple CarPlay and a live stream camera for your kids, pets or back seat passengers. You can view it full screen, side-by-side, or picture in picture, all on your CarPlay display. The wireless Ottocast dongle adapter boots up in seconds and pairs immediately. Once the adapter set up is installed, the camera functionality is a few screen taps away. I would recommend plugging in the camera’s power first before plugging in the Ottocast dongle adapter.
Please note this system only works on newer cars with CarPlay and with an Apple IPhone, I saw U-tube videos on making it work with an Android phone, even though it supposedly not compatible. I do not own an android phone and cannot comment if it is possible to pair this with an Android device.
Daytime screen quality is clear, night vision works very well. You can reposition the picture in picture window anywhere on the CarPlay screen. It has 150 field of view so technically you can see two children who are facing the same direction in the backseat. This does take some creative analysis in placing the camera in the right spot. This adapter may not be technical enough for CarPlay tech performance users, it is built for parents who want eyes on the back seat without turning around and for this use it’s brilliant and a much safer option. The kit provides you with a UBS-A to USB-C adapter to attach to the dongle if your car only has USB-C ports. It includes detailed instructions, a power cable for the camera and 2 options to mount the camera to the headrest. The camera does require power and comes with a cable. Most of the newer cars have USB ports located behind the seats and it’s an easy attachment. You could always use a portable battery if there wasnt a convenient USB outlet.
Having a newborn rear facing car seat makes this a new parent’s must have!! No more relying on a mirror that can shift out of position when looking in your rearview mirror. You can simply glance at your car display screen to instantly and continuously view your baby.
There are several Ottocasts Cabin Cares on Amazon. We now own 2 (one for each car) and can not determine the difference between them. I highly recommend any model, this one works flawlessly as does our more expensive one too!!!!!
