Best for small personal notebooks for people with patience
This is my first time using a binding machine. I thought it would be fun to make my own journal. Learning how to use this machine took me some time. There are instructions, but it wasn’t clicking for me. Again, it’s my first time using a machine like this.

I started with the square punch first. I was using cardstock paper and found that you can only really add two sheets at a time. A third sheet is doable, but much harder to press down on. It has guides in the form of measurements on the machine, as well as a pin or key of some kind to lock into different slots so your paper can lean up against it.

If you’re making a binding for 8 1/2 x 11″ sized paper, this will get quite tedious. The punch can punch only six squares at a time. You’ll need to use the guides and ruler to adjust your paper to get more punches in. This is ideal for those small spiral notebooks where six punches are all you’ll need.

Included with this machine are a few sample metal spiral bindings and circle bindings. The metal spiral bindings can be closed at the back of the machine. You just push down the lever to manually press the wires together. I’m not a fan of these particular spiral bindings, but the good news is you can use any other one you prefer. I had difficulty determining how to close the binding. I pushed down so hard that I bent the metal spiral. It gave a curved shape.

This also includes a detachable head for a disc punch. I’ve never even seen a binding like this before. It does hold the papers together, but as you add more sheets, it gets difficult to get the circle binding through the paper punch. I used cardstock, which is heavier than regular paper, so it didn’t get ruined too much. If you use regular paper, I foresee tearing.

Switching out the heads was easy. At the bottom, there is a removable tray for all the paper punches. It was easy to open and put back in. The machine is heavy because the bottom has metal parts. The rest of it is plastic, but it doesn’t feel cheaply made. The handle to push down is metal, which I think is better than plastic. It needs the metal’s strength to push down, and if it were plastic, it might break.

This is definitely for personal use, and for someone with patience and money. Most of the binding machines I saw online with similar features were priced around the same price or higher. The ones that cost less did not include detachable heads for different types of hole punches, as this one does, nor do they come with a wire press in the back. This set also includes a few samples of paper and different bindings, so you can test it out, which was great for me because I needed to do that in order to understand this new contraption.

Great for small notebook projects, not big jobs
I wanted this for making small planners and journal inserts at my desk, and that is where it fits best. The machine itself feels solid. It has a metal build and enough weight that it does not slide around when you pull the handle.

I used it first on a few mini notebooks and some study cards. Setup was pretty straightforward once I figured out which binding head I wanted. The interchangeable disc and square options are the main reason I liked this one, because it gives you a couple ways to build different kinds of books without taking up much space. It punches cleanly on regular paper, but you do need to respect the capacity. Around 10 sheets is realistic, and less if you are using cardstock.

The tradeoff is the short punch length. Anything over about 4 inches starts taking extra passes, and alignment gets fussier. I also noticed the little plastic paper guide is easy to misplace, and the waste tray is a little annoying to remove without spilling paper dots everywhere. The closer takes some force too, so use it on a steady table.

For hobby use, home projects, and small notebooks, I think this deserves 4 stars. It is sturdy and versatile, but not ideal for larger or high volume binding.

Heavy duty, easy to use, makes large and small books
The Munbyn binding machine is a heavy duty binder with 2 detachable heads. The Disc head is for smaller books, it makes a semi-circle with a slit that you then slide a disk into. The Square head can be used for different thicknesses and makes a series of square holes that you can then attach the wire coil to. It also came with discs and coils to get you started as well as several sheets of heavy cardstock.

I started by using two pieces of the cardstock as the cover and back. I then cut some of my multipurpose paper (90lb) just a bit smaller than the cover. I was only able to punch 3 sheets at a time because I was using thicker paper, I tested printer paper and I was able to fit 10 sheets easily. There is a guide that you can use to hold the paper if you are making something smaller for what would be the top of the page. When you insert the paper in to be punched it evens everything out for a straight edge.

If you want to make a full size book it is possible with this machine. There is a place to line up the last hole you made so you can continue with the same spacing. When you are ready to bind your book there is a loop placement in the front that holds the wire so you can easily put the paper on. Once that is done you turn the machine around and insert the wire and press. Now you have a closed wire at whatever size you need. There is a collection cup underneath to collect the punch’s. If you remove the head and give it a little push it comes right off and pops back on easily.

I did look for additional supplies for this machine and at this time I didn’t see anything from Manbyn, but there are other suppliers that have coils and you can pick up discs also. I am really happy with this machine I was afraid it would be light weight and it’s not. It gave me everything I needed to create my first book and it was easy to use.
