Very stiff needlepoint canvas
This looks to be a mono canvas, in an 18 CT mesh. (I’m still learning about fiber arts.) The product description says it is “made from soft yet durable pure cotton”. There’s nothing soft about the end product. This is an extremely stiff canvas, as in, will practically stand up on its own kind of stiff. The listing also says that it is “beautifully packaged as a ready-to-gift set”. That must have been cut and pasted from some other product because it is not a set, and it comes in a clear plastic bag, so not exactly “beautifully packaged.”
It’s a literal blank canvas, ready for you to transfer or create a pattern for your project. I have not done needlepoint yet, only some counted cross stitch. I thought this canvas would be like the ones in my cross stitch kits, but it’s more rigid and it’s more of a mesh than the counted cross stitch fabric. The 18 CT size means you will be able to have a good level of detail, though that may be overwhelming if you’re a beginner. Obviously, the sheet can be cut down to a smaller size. Just be careful about what project you are planning on using it for because mono is better suited for some projects than others. For example, it is my understanding that you don’t want to use mono canvas if you have large areas of half-cross tent stitches because it can pull the canvas out of shape.
My rough measurements were about 38.75″ (98.4 cm) by 55″ (139.7 cm). The listing says 39″ by 59″, and that may be so if you can get it to lay flat. I didn’t have a large enough, clear enough area at the time to try to put some weights on it.
Another issue with the listing is that it claims this is suitable for rug hooking. I find that hard to believe. You would need a very tiny hook for that!
To me, it seems a bit pricey at the listed price when I ordered it, but it is quite a large piece of material just waiting to be turned into something amazing.
I paint my own needlepoint canvases and am really picky about what kind of canvas I buy for my projects. This blank needlepoint canvas provides a generous amount of material for larger projects. The 18-count mesh is consistent throughout and offers a nice balance between detail and stitchability, however some of the holes aren’t completely open so if you are painting this yourself you are going to have to stab a needle thru the parts that are a bit thicker.
The canvas feels sturdy and holds its shape well while working on it. Whether you’re creating your own design, adapting a pattern, or planning a custom project, the large size gives plenty of room for creativity.
It’s a solid option for needlepoint enthusiasts who want quality canvas without paying specialty shop prices.
I am thoroughly impressed with the quality of this 13CT needlepoint canvas. It can be surprisingly difficult to find a blank canvas of this size (39×59 inches) that maintains such consistent, even holes across the entire surface, but this one is spot on.
The material is high-quality cotton that feels durable enough to handle heavy-duty stitching without warping or pulling out of shape. The 13CT count is perfect for my current project—it’s small enough to allow for great detail but large enough to make progress quickly, even on a piece this massive. Whether you are doing embroidery, cross stitch, or traditional needlepoint, this provides a fantastic, stable foundation.
If you are a crafter planning a larger project like a wall hanging or a custom rug, this canvas is exactly what you need. It arrived well-packaged and ready to work with. Highly recommended for any serious needlework enthusiast.
Definitely needlepoint canvas
This canvas is definitely for needlepoint though, I suppose, it could be used for other needlework.
It is a big piece of stiff evenly woven material. My preference is for this large a piece of canvas to be in a roll to avoid all the folds. I understand the cost of shipping something in a long tube shape. The canvas I received was left in my mailbox and that is why it is curved as well as folded. When I take it out to use it, I will try using a steamer to flatten the canvas. And I will use stretcher bars.
From what I can tell, this is a good quality needlepoint canvas. Needlepoint canvas, by its nature, is stiff.
What I would suggest is that this product is not, by its nature, meant for other types of needlework, for example, cross stitch and “embroidery.” The first is often worked on a special weave called aida cloth and the second on a variety of smooth finishes. From the samples in the ad I see some bargello type stitches, a variety of needlepoint that would work well, especially because it requires a stiff canvas to prevent warping as the stitches are worked.
I am happy to have such a large piece of canvas at the price.
