Nice brood boxes
These beeswax-dipped 10-frame beehive boxes are well-made, high-quality, and we definitely plan to use them for our hives this season. They’re fairly easy to assemble, but as some reviewers have also mentioned, the cuts on the dovetail joints aren’t always entirely even so there’s that little hiccup to deal with in terms of ease of putting it all together. And like the other reviewers have also found, a rubber mallet is helpful in knocking them together. These are definitely not triple-waxed by any stretch, and are probably finished with just a single coat, the quality of which we clearly can’t be sure of. However, $60 for two decent quality deep brood boxes is a good value, and if your beekeeping budget is tight, these will serve you just fine, as long as you bear in mind that you still have to supply the frames and foundation. Would overall recommend them.
The best smelling hive boxes eve
I plan to return to update this review when I’ve had a chance to install my hives in these. This part of the review will just be on quality and assembly.
I was very impressed with the quality of these boxes: the beeswax dip is even and thick, and the wood is very uniform in quality. The joint cuts are so clean that I had to tap the sides hard to get them to come together, and there are screw guide holes pre drilled on the outer-facing edge so assembly is a breeze. The wood color is as pictured: a beautiful, rich honey gold.
Another plus of these boxes: they smell fantastic!
I have used this brand for my beekeeping needs before and have been consistently happy with their products.
One thing I would like to mention first is that the dovetail joints did not seem to be cut with a very sharp bit. Some of the cuts had wood grain sticking out, which made the boxes slightly harder to assemble. I used a rubber mallet to pre-assemble each box, then tightened everything with the included screws. After assembly, I lightly re-melted the wax on the joints with a torch. The quality of the final assembled boxes was not affected by this issue, but it did take a little extra effort.
The boxes arrived well packaged with no damage or warping. The wax coating looks good, and the boxes themselves are made from good quality wood. This set of two boxes will be used for a new hive. The size is accurate and fits perfectly with my other standard 10-frame deep boxes, medium supers, and frames.
Keep in mind that this kit does not include frames or foundations. You only get the wooden box parts and screws. Assembly is simple, but because the dovetail cuts were a little rough on my set, I would recommend having a rubber mallet nearby and taking your time fitting the joints together before driving in the screws. Do not use too much force so you do not crack the dovetails. Just get the joints started, then use the screws to pull the boards together.
I actually prefer boxes to come unassembled because they are much easier to store, and each box only takes about five minutes to assemble.
At around $60 for two boxes at the time of this review, this is a great deal per box, especially considering how much time I save by not having to wait for good weather and paint them myself. Even with the slightly rough dovetail cuts, I am happy with the final result. Once assembled, the boxes feel sturdy, fit my standard equipment properly, and are ready to use.
