Big Room-Filling Sound in a Minimalist Package, Just Skip the App
I recently replaced a larger audio setup with this speaker, and I am genuinely impressed by how its subtle design manages to produce such a room-filling sound. The aesthetics are truly “high-end,” and it fits perfectly into my minimal decor without the bulk of traditional units. As shown in the photos i have high relectice ceilings so this is not an easy space. If you are judging this purely on its build quality and audio performance, it punches well above its weight class.
The audio quality is the standout feature; it actually performs far better than the larger unit I had in place before. It manages to be powerful yet clear, which was my primary goal for this purchase. However, while the hardware is exceptional, the software and documentation are deficient.
My main gripe is the setup process. The product did not come with a comprehensive instruction manual, which I found frustrating. Instead of providing clear, printed network instructions, the packaging directs you toward an app. In my experience, the app was annoying and did not work on my network; it simply omitted the necessary troubleshooting steps for a successful connection.
Because of these technical hurdles, I am currently using this strictly as a Bluetooth and AUX input speaker, and in that capacity, I am very happy with it. However, the “smart” features and lack of documentation make it lose a star in my final assessment.
This would not work for a grandparent. Its confusing. Even in my video i get flustered the audio aux cord is documenteded at auto play; its not – you have to hit 3 on top to play audio. its confusing.
This is a fantastic-sounding device for those who value aesthetics and raw audio power. If you are looking for a high-end Bluetooth or wired speaker for a minimal space, this is an excellent option; however, if you specifically need a speaker with seamless network integration and “smart” app features, you might want to look elsewhere.
DENON'S GOT A WINNER!
I’ve only had this for less than a week, but I am already really impressed with it. I thought that it might be tough to setup because it only came with a Quick Start page, so I printed out the full 53 page manual which is good to have. However, I really just set it up using Denon’s HEOS app and had it up and running in minutes.
The sound is really great out of the box. It is warm and detailed and I made no adjustments to the bass or treble. Regarding placement, there are settings based on the speaker’s proximity to walls. There is a width setting for a wider soundstage with 1 to 5 choices. After researching, I have it set to 2. The height setting for Dolby Atmos also has 1 – 5 choices. I have mine set to 3. I found that if you push these settings to 5, there are some recordings that may set the vocals back a bit. All of these settings will be influenced by the size and specifics of the room, so you may want to experiment with your choices.
I am using Tidal, Qobuz and Amazon Music Unlimited as they are natively supported. I’m an Apple guy, so I have Apple Music and it will work nicely with Airplay but as of yet there is no support for Dolby Atmos with Apple Music. I’ve also added radio stations with TuneIn and iHeart.
As a final note, I will emphasize that the full manual is great to have even though initial setup was a breeze using the HEOS app.
