Wow. You must get this for your RV. Easy and quick. Great camera.
I don’t usually write reviews, but this one deserves it. I installed the Auto-Vox 8.2″ backup camera on my RV and it has completely changed how confident I feel on the road—especially when backing up and changing lanes.
First Impressions
Right out of the box, everything felt solid and well-built. The monitor is a great size—big enough to see clearly without being distracting. Setup was way easier than I expected, even for someone who isn’t super technical.
Installation
Honestly, this was one of my biggest concerns going in, but it turned out to be pretty straightforward. The instructions were clear, and once I got everything mounted and powered, it synced up without any headaches.
Performance on the Road
This is where the system really shines.

Final Thoughts
If you own an RV and don’t have a backup camera—or you’re dealing with a bad one—this is absolutely worth it. It’s one of those upgrades that instantly improves your experience and peace of mind.
I feel a lot safer driving now, and that alone makes it worth every penny.
Nun kompletter Blick nach hinten am Carava
Habe die drei Kameras am Wohnwagen meines Vaters montiert. Er ist ganz glcklich, dass er nun auch seitlich einen Blick nach hinten hat, ws das Rangieren wesentlich sicherer macht. Das Display ist hell und klar. Die Montage dauert bei den kabelgebundenen Kameras natrlich lnger als bei den Solarkameras von Auto-Vox, wie ich sie an meinem Kastenwagen habe. Klare Kaufempfehlung fr Caravans. Fr einen Kastenwagen/Camper wrde ich weiterhin eher auf die duale Solar-Kamera setzen.
Seem to work pretty good, only issue is install instructions are reversed for side cameras. So in auto world right side is driver side, camera is labeled right should go on passenger side
Screen is a serious upgrade over other AUTO-VOX models, but the camera is a tradeoff
I’ve tested quite a few AUTO-VOX trailer camera kits now, and universally these are excellent products. You can’t go wrong with any of them, to the point I’ve now got one on my tent trailer and gotten others for my family as gifts. They’re all high build quality, have exceptional range and very good picture quality, and are generally easy to install. This review is going to focus on some of the differences between this model and the solar-powered kit I have in use on my trailer currently.
In terms of pros/benefits:
-This offers one of the biggest screens on an AUTO-VOX system to date, and the touch sensitivity is excellent.
-This is their first Android Auto / Carplay-integrated system I’ve tried and its very good. This can serve as an entire vehicle entertainment/audio system, not just a backup camera. For vehicles without that existing integration, this is a phenomenal upgrade on that basis alone.
-Installation hardware is all included and the in-vehicle installation is quite straightforward.
-SD card for recording is included, and this is the first of their systems I’ve tried with the capability of recording the camera’s continuous output. That allows this to function as a rear-view dashcam as well as backup camera, which is a great added feature.
-The in-vehicle power supply is a 12V adapter that connects to USB-C, finally. AUTO-VOX’s other models use a 12V to proprietary pin system, which was always frustrating if you wanted to use your own 12V adapter. With this one you finally can.
Drawbacks/cons:
-The on-screen controls aren’t completely intuitive; you’ll need to read the manual. As an example, I found that in order to view the live camera output I needed to press on the DVR button (which you’d think controls recording, right?) instead of the other camera-labelled function. It’s a minor gripe, but the UI could use a little work. Android Auto works as expected, however.
-The camera feels like a regression on their other models. Mine for example has a stand-alone solar charging system and can also be removed to be charged directly from a power supply via a USB cable. It’s not at all dependent on vehicle or trailer wiring, so it can be literally installed anywhere. This model is hardwired, requiring you to tap into either an existing 3.5mm pre-wired camera jack if you’re lucky enough to have one, or more likely tap into the trailer lighting system. That’s also limiting because you have to select a light that has constant power – no using the driving lights or plate light that activate only when you have your headlights on at night. Installation is a bit of a pain as a result.
-The camera housing is all plastic, including where the screws attach to the trailer. While not entirely unexpected, I’ve been spoiled with the other cameras that had steel mounting plates and magnetic attachment.
-Camera angles are limited and a little difficult to adjust.
All in all, this is still an excellent value on a combined vehicle entertainment control and backup camera system, and if you can use the Android Auto / CarPlay system it’s well worth the $280 CAD regular price (at review time). If you don’t need the smart system, and recording isn’t important, just view, I recommend looking at their other models for something more versatile in its camera installation and power options.
Awesome alternative for pre-wired system
This backup camera is specifically designed to mount to any trailer that is prewired and setup to accept a backup camera system. It can also be used if this is not the case but it will require additional work for mounting and wiring. If pre-wired it is plug and play!
The system includes a main display unit with a 7.2″ HD screen, a 2 piece mounting/support system for the display, a reverse camera with mounting gasket, removable antennas for the display and the camera and power cords for both the unit and the camera (the latter only needed if your trailer is not pre-wired).
The main unit has a very nice and very large screen. It produces a good quality and stable image. It has 3 buttons on the back that you use for accessing menus and settings. One example is that the guidelines on the screen can be toggled on and off and you can adjust them vertically, horizontally and the spacing to suit your installation. You can also toggle between different display configurations if you are running a multi-camera system. There is a microSD card slot on the back of the unit and an included 32GB microSD card that can be used to record the view and then later played back on the screen. Very handy especially when you want to brag to your friends and show them how you parked your RV in that tough spot on the first try!
The 2-piece mounting bracket that supports the main unit works but leaves a little to be desired. The base is sufficiently large to hold up the screen and prevents tipping, but it requires a fair bit of real estate on your dashboard. So, depending on your dash you may have trouble finding a flat spot for it. Another problem is that the upper part of the bracket holds the display via 4 tabs that engage with 4 slots on the back of the display. However, it does not lock in any way. The unit just rests on the tabs by gravity. If you hit a large enough bump or knock it accidentally it can fall off the support. I feel like a simple sliding lock or button would have been nice to secure it one engaged. That said there is some friction between the tabs and the slots so maybe it will be OK.
Power to the main unit is provided by a 12V DC cigarette lighter adapter cable that connects with a pig tail that is hard wired to the display unit. There is also a USBa cable that can be used as well. So, depending on what power ports you have available there are options.
The reverse camera is a direct plug-in and mount to the pre-wired camera-ready bracket at the back of the trailer. It has infrared LEDs on either side for night vision which is super handy if you end up having to park in the dark.
Unfortunately, my RV is still in storage for the winter, so I had to run my tests in the garage using just my tow vehicle and setting up the camera with a power supply on my toolbox. Connection between the main unit and the camera was very quick on power-up and the image was solid and stable. I hope I will get the same result with my RV in between the display and the camera when I am finally able to install it.
Overall, this RV reverse camera kit really impressed me. At the time of order, it was only $159.99 on sale, which I think is a steal for a plug and play system. My only gripe is the less than stellar mount for the display but given the quality and performance of the rest of the system I am very happy with it. I look forward to getting it installed and giving it a full shake down now that the season is almost here.
This backup camera is wonderful. The monitor is extremely clear and sooo simple to install. Just remove a clearance light, cut the wires and splice the camera in the place of the clearance light. I also installed the side cameras and all 3 cameras display on the nice wide monitor. The wireless is flicker free. Highly recommend this setup.
Impressive quality and easy setup – 5 stars
I haven’t been able to install this yet since our RV is still in storage, but I was able to connect the monitor to my phone and wanted to share my first impressions. This looks like a really solid, well-designed system, and everything feels high quality.
The large monitor has a glossy glass screen, looks clear, and the touchscreen is very responsive. The size feels good for visibility without taking over the dash. Mounting the monitor is simple with an adhesive base that needs about 5″ by 3″ of flat space, plus it has an adjustable knob to set the viewing angle. Power is easy too, using the included USB-C cable into the cigarette lighter.
A huge plus is that the camera and monitor connect wirelessly, so no wires needed from camera to monitor. The installation instructions for the camera include options for pre-wired RVs, or wiring to 12V running lights (camera will activate when running lights on) or reverse tail lights (camera will activate when in reverse gear), and it looks pretty manageable. It comes with a 32GB SD card already installed for DVR recording, but it was a bit tricky to remove and insert, and I had to use a kitchen knife to press and release it. Another feature I really like is that it shows guide lines when in reversing assist mode. I have that on my car and find it really helpful when backing into tight spaces.
CarPlay is a big highlight for me. We use iPhones, so having navigation, music, and calls on a larger screen is a huge upgrade over a phone mount. Setup was pretty straightforward, although I had to connect to “Auto-vox-Vista” in my phones Bluetooth options, instead of selecting CarPlay directly as the instructions mentioned. My phone also showed a code that I was to confirm was displayed on the monitor, but it never appeared and I hit yes anyway and it connected. After that, it worked as expected.
I liked that the monitor could be set for one screen, or it could be split. I one of my photos I showed that it could be split into 3 screens for navigation and music. Sound wise, the monitor connected via Bluetooth, so the audio played through my phone, but there are also options to use the included AUX cable to connect to the vehicle, play through the monitor’s built in speaker, or use the FM transmitter. The built in speaker works fine for navigation and calls, but I wouldn’t want to listen to music on it for long. I do like having all the different options though.
Overall, this feels like a high quality, feature packed system that will make reversing large vehicles much easier. We plan to power it through our running lights, and it looks like a pretty simple installation.
I have an older 40 ft Class A pusher and I got this to replace the older black and white style system that was in it from original. It was a super easy change out. The monitor worked in place on the mount on the dash, and then I re-used the 4 wire camera for the main rear view and just connected black / red to fused 12v power so it would act simply as power feed. Then popped out the 2 side markers lights and used the power feeds for those. It all works with no other real setup needed over the wifi signal for the signal. The video is super clear, I can run it on watching my trailer and for lane changes or threading into tight spots, gas fill ups, etc. Plus it keeps recording which is nice to have if something ever happens on route. The nice part is that I keep mine parked in an enclosed storage – it’s the only reason she’s lasted this long – so while the solar ones work great too and don’t even need power, I like that mine is powered off the 12v system for the vehicle itself. So this works when I pull it out even at night and don’t need to let it get charged up or internal batteries to wear out over time. It’s a great upgrade and easy install.
Easy Upgrade for Safer RV Backing
I installed this on a pre-wired RV and the setup was much easier than I expected. It really was close to plug-and-play, and I had it up and running pretty quickly. The monitor is a nice size and gives a clear, wide view behind the trailer, which makes backing into campsites and tighter spaces a lot less stressful.
What stood out most to me was the signal stability. I was expecting some lag or dropouts with a wireless system, but the connection has been solid and the live view stays smooth while driving. The night vision is also better than I expected and helps a lot when arriving at a campground after dark.
I also like that it supports more cameras if I ever want to add side coverage later.
Clear Camera, Stable Wireless Signal
The backup camera is excellent. We were able to set this up by tapping into the tail light: it’s been working reliably with no cutouts or glitches at all. It wasn’t a terribly difficult install. The resolution is very good: I can clearly see people, vehicles and obstacles. We love that it makes reversing much easier and safer due to the visibility: the wireless performance worked well and I didn’t have issues with the latency. The ability to use it as a dashcam is also very nice: recordings work well and are easy to pull out of the unit inside the vehicle.
Having CarPlay on the display is a huge perk. Primarily use it for music and maps but it’s smooth and has been very stable.
