Solid Hive Upgrade with a Slight Wobble (That Bees Don’t Care About)
This 2-pack of screened bottom boards checks a lot of the right boxes right out of the gate. The sizing is spot-on for 10-frame hives, which is one of those things you don’t think about until it’s wrong and then it’s all you can think about. No issues here. Everything fits like it should.
The paraffin-dipped woodenware is a quiet little luxury. It gives the boards a head start against weathering without requiring you to break out brushes, sealant, or an afternoon you didn’t really have. Straight from the box to the apiary is always a win.
The removable bottom boards slide in and out smoothly, which makes inspections and mite management a lot less of a wrestling match. No sticking, no forcing, no muttering under your breath while the bees judge you.
Build quality is mostly solid, but not flawless. The joints on top of the screen are a bit underwhelming, which gives the structure a slight wobble when it’s empty. That said, once you’ve got a deep body on top and things are up and running, the issue more or less disappears into the background. The bees certainly aren’t filing complaints.
Price-wise, these land right in the “fair deal” zone. Not a steal, not overpriced. You get what you expect, which in beekeeping is sometimes the highest compliment.
Overall: dependable, functional, and beekeeper-friendly, with a minor quirk that doesn’t impact real-world use.
Excellent quality boards
Super pleased with these screened bottoms for our beehives. The quality is excellent and the screens fit in comfortably tight. The quality of the joints is excellent, it has a light beeswax coating on it. Another brand of boards we have, has gaps in which the bees can escape. This product does not have that issue. It comes with an entrance reducer for each board. These boards make it easy to get the proper temperature regulation year-round. We’re happy with the quality and the price is the going rate.
