I'm enjoying them. Bright, clear image!
I’ve been enjoying these binoculars this winter and spring for my bird watching walks. They have a good weight and feel without being too heavy. They feel very solid. They are not massive nor are they tiny. I live on an isthmus between two lakes so bird watching is a great and easy way to get out in nature and enjoy the beautiful landscape and life around me. It’s calming to the nervous system.
I had been in the market for 8 x 42 binoculars which are the most recommended magnification for birdwatching, because a lower magnification makes it a little easier to get the birds you are seeking in your sights. However since I so often look at things far-off across the lake these are kind of a nice idea since they give a little bit more magnification for distant objects. If all your birding is trees relatively near by the 8 x 42 is easier and sufficient.
When I got these it was really still wintery and I had to wait till spring had sprung for more birds to come back to our area. Yesterday was perfect for that. I took my time getting accustomed to these binoculars, adjusting the eye pieces and practicing “acquiring” the bird in my sights and adjusting the focus with the central knob. Early spring’s chickadees and robins were out, and on a distant thermal I saw a soaring bird that I could not identify with confidence with eyes only. Through the 10x magnification of the Bostron binoculars I could see for certain that it had a bright white head and broad white tail. We have a lot of Bald Eagles here but it’s always a real delight.
There were ducks on the water, mallards but mingled with them a flock of some ducks I wasn’t completely certain of the identity of. I studied them through the binoculars and memorized their field marks so I could look them up in my bird book at home. They looked as crisp and bright as a nature film, and I could see beautiful subtleties of how their neck feathers shifted colors in the light. At home I could see that they were, as I suspected, blue-winged teals. There were tree swallows difficult to capture because they don’t hold still for long, a downy woodpecker, and Canada geese across the path way which looked as big as tyrannosaurs if not brachiosaurs through the high magnification. No, I didn’t really need binoculars to see them. I watched a crow at the water’s edge fishing in the water for, probably, bugs. Even a lady red-winged black bird and a male grackle looked very beautiful under magnification and crisp focus.
I kept going further, seeking more birds, so the binoculars encouraged me to get more exercise, four or five miles. I’m a bit out of shape after having been fairly lazy over the winter, so I needed it.
Pretty good
This is a set of 10x binoculars with a pretty decent lens size so it’s able to catch a lot of light, which is good for low light conditions. To me, 10x is kind of the sweet spot for a good amount of magnification that you can still hand hold without getting too wobbly. The binoculars themselves are nice – they have adjustable eye relief rings for both eyes that really help with the comfort as I like to rest them on my brow ridges, and the lenses are clear and sharp without any noticeable color distortion. The designer made kind of a weird choice of only giving a diopter adjustment on the right eye, I’m not sure why they did that. This set is compact enough to toss in a backpack or you could use the included shoulder strap bag, which is just adequate – it’s not very padded so I doubt it’d really protect the binoculars. The included neck strap for the binocs is awful, it feels so cheap and I was surprised that they paired it with a pretty decent piece of equipment. These are a very decent set for the price, they’re good enough to take to a concert or a hike but not so bulky or expensive that you might end up opting to leave them at home instead.
CLEAR AND BRIGHT MAGNIFICATION
I’m pretty impressed with the lenses and image quality of these binoculars. With a 42 mm. objective lens, the image is clear and bright, with focus being easily and quickly achieved by turning the focus knob
situated between the eyepieces. Additionally, there is a diopter adjustment for fine tuning which is a nice feature if you wear glasses.
The field of view is approximately 320′ at 1,000 yards, which is a reasonably wide angle for general purposes, although you may prefer a wider angle for searching in open water or scanning the night sky. Having a magnification of 10X, a subject at a distance of 100 yards, appears as being the same size if viewed with the naked eye at 10 yards, making them more suited for nature viewing or bird watching, for example.
Overall quality is fairly impressive. They have a hard rubber coating on the frames around the lenses, and the body has kind of a rubberized texture providing a good grip surface.
Accessories include a lens cleaning cloth, a carrying case and a strap for carrying them around your neck. However, since I would like to keep these binoculars in one piece, I am disposing of the case and neck strap as they are of a much lower quality than the binoculars themselves. The case offers little or no protection, and the neckstrap is totally useless in terms of holding the binoculars securely.
Not necessarily a negative, but I wouldn’t exactly refer to these as being “palm size”, that is unless you happen to play in the NBA. I happen to have a more average size hand, and their relative size can be seen in my review photos. Also, at around 1-1/2 lbs., their not all that lightweight, especially if you plan on carrying them for a day of bird watching.
All that being said, I do find these to be a good pair of binoculars and I’ll definitely take them with me on my next birding adventure, along with a different strap and case.
Price wise, they’re probably around what you might expect to pay for binoculars with comparable features. In terms of overall quality and functionality alone, I feel they are worthy of a 5 star review.
