Installed 275 feet of fencing with this item and while yes, it does not have a clutch, it does have variable speed so you should not ‘blast it’ when digging or it will spin the top, and if you don’t let go it could twist your wrists/arms. So just need to be careful. I bought two wrist wraps for wrist support which I think is helpful for the occasional spin. Usually you can tell if you are encountering a rock/root it will let you know. For us once we got past a certain layer in the dirt close to the house (from original construction rock/debris it appeared) it was clear sailing. For fencing away from the house the dirt is clear. Tip: Drill down, let drill stop and then pull out the drill which will pull the dirt with it without throwing it all over. Then the drill is light enough to flip it to the side and tap it to get dirt debris off it. Depending on your strength, how much of the drill you want to pull up, you kind of want to keep arms straight and do it like a deadlift. It helps you clearly need some strength to do this job. It is way easier and faster than post hole digging there is no doubt and the stress on your rotators / shoulders from manual post hole digging i think is greater than the risk of breaking a wrist. You don’t want to be going ‘full blast’ on your first dig down, go slow with some pressure if you feel some resistance it is a rock or root. Once you clear things you can go back down faster with low pressure, let it stop, pull out and remove the dirt/clay. Overall I consider this item to be a ‘lifesaver’ on my shoulders, back and time as well. You still want to have a post hole digger because that can help you get through roots and dislodge rocks. I found a 45″ tire iron also helps to knock out rocks wedged in the side of the hole. Wear gloves, wear wrist wraps to help protect your wrists. Use some common sense, let go of the drill if it stops and spins it will stop quickly as you need to squeeze the trigger to make it work. No issues with performance it is holding up well.
After having my relatively new 2cycle (HF) auger crap out on me.. with 20 holes to go.. and wasted half a day tinkering on it , I happened on this electric auger. Being a little skeptical, but overwhelmed by the idea of being able to just pick it up and have a usable tool, I went for it. I have a small 80cc firman generator that worked just fine. I threw it on the tractor along with the auger, and took off. I WAS BLOW AWAY BY THIS LITTLE BEAST!!! It munched through roots, and dug into gumbo (a thick clay soil that’s either gooey or super hard ..smoking tools in a heartbeat) This little auger made my day so easy!! Really.. I don’t want to work harder.. the ergonomics are good, and I was less fatigued due to its lighter weight! My post are 200lbs, so any cut on labor is a blessing. And do you know what the next best part is??? I know that if it sits for a year.. it’s still gonna work!!! I am delighted with this purchase!! And I hope it does as well for you!! I have a feeling I will be digging more holes just because it is so darn effective! Quality: good, Power: good, ergonomics: good. Auger bit: good, sharp. I do hope this tool makes you as happy as it did me.
I had an old gas auger from Harbor Freight and after several years in storage, it’s leaking oil so forget gas, too much maintenance and hassle.
Let’s find an electrical auger and I found this popular one. It’s strong, reliable and affordable! It came with 6in bit and I bought the 12 in bit to drill 32 holes (12in diameter, 24in deep). Drill with 6in bit first, it’s easy to handle with just one person. Then widen the hole with 12in bit. Add water to the hole and wait for it to soak if it’s hard clay. Be patient if your soil is clay with rock like mine.
Seems fine so far..
Received in a few days, was easy to assemble. Only made a couple holes so far but seems to work well in my sandy soil. Have plenty of roots around where I want to make some post holes so that could be trickier. Just don’t go too deep too fast, bring it up and clear it. I’m a 70 y.o. guy and the size and weight is good.
I was truly surprised just how well this inexpensive electrical auger worked. The auger bit that comes with it cuts through the ground exceptionally well. I also used their 10″ and 12″ bits, which worked exceptionally well also. This auger had much more torque and power than the small gasoline augers you buy or can rent from a big-box store. Also surprisingly, the auger bit on this cuts into the ground much better than the bits that come with rental augers from the local orange big-box store. As in, it was a no-contest on how well the Xtremepower bits cut through the soil. That really surprised me too because the bits form the big-box rental department look mean in comparison.
Only safety negative I have is that if you hit a root or rock, it will not shutoff. For a safety I have a helper hold the cord taunt but night tight from behind and to my right. This way, when you do hit a rock or root, if the unit begins to twist in your hands, it will simply unplug itself and stop turning. This worked exceptionally well in the areas where I have dead tree roots under ground. (Note that this is good advice for any cored power tool of this nature, I would never tie a night in the cord to keep it plugged in. You *want* something like this to come unplugged if the cord is pulled!)
Definitely worth the money!
I had eight big holes to dig today and this auger made the job so much easier. It’s surprisingly powerful but still easy to handle with just one person — no need for a second set of hands. The balance and design make it simple to keep steady, even in tougher soil. It worked perfectly from start to finish, saving me a ton of time and effort. Definitely better than renting one, and now I’ve got it ready whenever I need it.
