Insoma keeps getting better and better with their timers
I just received this Insoma Timer and will be comparing it to a similarly priced competitor, the Orbit 62061Z.
Insoma:
The Insoma timer comes with everything you need to set up the auto timing aspect (you will still need hose/lines/sprinklers). It comes with teflon tape, 3/4 to 1/2 adapter and a quick connect. A 3/4″ and 1/2″ rubber washer is also included. The timer itself feels solid and well constructed especially with the all brass pipe.
Pros:
Smaller compact design looks modern and aesthetically pleasing.
The battery compartment is screwless – you only need to pry it out with your fingertips. There is a rubber seal to prevent moisture seeping into the compartment.
Battery level indicator shows battery level. Screen also shows timer info all in one glance. No need to switch pages
Setting the clock/timer is quite simple with the addition of the OK button. You can set the hr/minutes individually.
Upgraded larger dial, compared to the older all plastic Insoma
Orbit:
This unit feels quite different from the Insoma. The Orbit timer itself is about twice the size, and has a older style, but the green color scheme may appeal to some gardeners
The dial is huge and quite easy to turn, especially since you can use all 5 fingers to grasp it
The buttons seem to require a bit more force to depress
The battery compartment is also sealed with a rubber seal, but very hard to remove with my finger nails. Superhuman finger strength required here.
Setting the clock is more time consuming. You have to hold down the button until the minutes pass hourly. There is no ok button to set the hr/min separately. If you sped past your desired time, you have to continue 24hrs until your set time comes around again. Annoying.
No accessories included – timer only.
Overall, I much prefer the Insoma timer due to the many pros offered, especially with the larger dial. They seem to have improved with every iteration and this one seems to have everyone you need in a timer.
Tips: Use alkaline/lithium batteries. Rechargeable batteries often do not have enough voltage to power the lcd screen properly.
Solid, simple, and built better than the plastic ones
I’ve tried a few hose timers before and most felt flimsy. This one is different right away. The metal build gives it a sturdy feel, and I don’t worry about leaks or cracking under pressure. I run fairly strong water pressure and this has handled it without any issues so far.
The brass pipe makes a difference. I noticed better flow compared to the plastic timers I used before. My sprinklers run more evenly and I don’t see the pressure drop I used to get.
Setup was straightforward. The dial and buttons are simple to understand. I was able to set my watering days and duration without needing to keep going back to the instructions. The screen is large enough to read outside, even in bright light, which I appreciate.
The manual watering feature is useful when I want to run the hose outside of my schedule. I’ve also used the rain delay a couple times and it worked as expected, paused everything and then picked back up on its own. The child lock is a nice extra if you have kids or pets around.
Battery life has been solid so far. I like that it only uses AA batteries and doesn’t need anything complicated.
Overall, this feels like a more durable and reliable option compared to the cheaper plastic timers. I would buy it again.
Well this is only a 2-week review so believe me if I have any problems with this in the next couple of months I will definitely update but for now it’s doing a good job for what it’s intended for and its easy to set up, pretty self-explanatory and so far no leaks, actually got this for a nuisance cat going into my backyard where my bird feeders and squirrel feeders are so I have this to turn on every hour for 5 minutes, And it’s getting the grass green in the process..
