I’m a lifelong audiophile with a particular fondness for well designed beautifully made small monitor speakers. I was skeptical of the Tabebuia because SMSL is known for electronics, not speakers, but when the price dropped more than 50% from the original $550 I tried them out and am very pleased. They are tiny, but are built like expensive speakers, the two Wavecor WF118WA07 woofers and two TW022WA04 (I think) Tweeters sell for more than $300 by themselves. The cabinets are thick well braced MDF (passing the knock test) and everything is beautifully finished. The included grills attach magnetically. The cabinets are angled with non-parallel sides all around to reduce resonance. The bass port is unusually placed on the bottom. Its there for a reason, it allows for a smaller footprint and longer port (for deeper tuning) than if it was on the front/back. SMSL’s illustration of the port is not accurate, it is a long port that extends fully from bottom to top and then bends into an “L” shape. As a result, venting required either the included spikes or some substitute like rubber feet. I understand this can pose a problem, but for me it solved one. Because the speaker faces angle slightly up, they point away from me when placed above my monitor. The spikes, when solidly anchored with 3M Felt Self-Stick Furniture Pads (less than $5) allow me to tilt the speaker forward to aim perfectly at my ears. Such a large tilt with rubber feet would likely slip. They sound really great to me, although as previously noted, even better with some equalization. SMSL makes a couple of amps with a supposed Tabebuia Curve built in. The PA400 was on closeout so I got one. It is a very nice amp but the EQ curve does not help at all in my room. The speakers were generally well tuned at the factory and can be improved by fine-tuning based on your placement, not on a preset curve. I am extremely happy and may opt for a 2nd pair. Note they are quite small and will not replace large monitors in a large room. That said, close up the sound, balance, and even the bass is 1st rate.
Nice compact size and aesthetic. Shiny gloss finish and magnetic grilles look great.
Sound is good, great detail on the high end gives a bright shine and mids are fine, but as expected from a 4″ driver there is very little bottom end. Definitely needs a separate subwoofer if you like a bit of bass.
I don’t understand why they give carpet spikes on a bookshelf speaker. Who has a carpeted shelf? You also get 8 small disks to position on a hard surface before placing the spikes. Honestly it’s a bit of a faf to get them right and you can’t then easily move the speaker because it slides off the disks and then gouges the shelf. I get they’re trying to emulate audiophile, but honestly rubber feet would have been better. You can’t not use the spikes because the port is on the bottom, so it must be lifted up. Honestly I think there’s better out there for the money.
Update 1: I played around with my parametric EQ (pictured settings) and got them sounding wayyy better. Added 6-9db in the 40-90hz range, -3db between 500 and 1000 hertz, and +5db at 6-9kHz. Now there is enough bass (even with sub off) and full detail at the top. I still think they’re pricey, but the sound now definitely makes the value better.
