Practical hose timer. Multiple settings for customization and rain delay.
I picked this up mainly for a small “square-foot” vegetable garden that can dry out quickly but is also easy to overwater, so I wanted something that could give me a bit more control without having to worry about forgetting. Even though I haven’t used it through a full growing season yet (it’s winter here), I’ve gone through the setup and basic functions, and so far it looks very promising.
Setup is straightforward. It comes with everything you need: washers, Teflon tape, and even a spare filter; so getting it connected is quick and easy. It runs on two AA batteries (not included), and programming is done with a simple dial and buttons on the front.
One feature I really like is the cycle & soak option. Instead of just running water continuously, it breaks the watering into intervals with soak time in between. For a shallow garden like mine, that’s actually ideal because it helps prevent runoff and allows the soil to absorb water more evenly instead of getting flooded.
The display is large and easy to read, and I like that it shows things like time remaining during watering. There’s also a manual watering option and a rain delay feature, which will be useful during unpredictable weather.
Build quality seems solid for a plastic unit. Like all outdoor timers, it’s not something I’d want sitting through the freeze/thaw of a northern winter, but with normal care and bringing it in during winter, it should hold up fine.
The connections are plastic, so you’ll want to be careful not to overtighten. (The instructions say to tighten by hand)
Overall, this is a very practical timer that gives you more control than a basic on/off timer. For a small garden like mine, it should be perfect, especially for avoiding overwatering and not having to worry about remembering to turn the hose on or off in the middle of summer.
Easy to use sprinkler time
The sprinkler timer is easy to program and controls watering cycles reliably for the garden and lawn. The cycle-and-soak feature helps prevent runoff and ensures deep soil watering. Manual watering and rain delay options are convenient for adjusting to changing weather. The display is clear and intuitive, making setup straightforward. The connections fit standard garden hoses without leaks. Some buttons require firm presses to register commands accurately.
A Smarter Way to Run Your Sprinkle
This review is for the RAINPOINT Sprinkler Timer, and I look forward to actually using it if winter ever decides to end.
My first impressions are very positive. The timer feels well made, the design is thoughtful, and the display is large and easy to read so you don’t have to bend into awkward positions just to adjust the settings. The instructions are detailed yet straightforward, making setup simple even for those who aren’t particularly tech savvy.
Setup was fast and easy in my garage. Everything just connected effortlessly from the connection to the outdoor faucet to the connection to the hose. Unfortunately, as we are still below freezing, I was unable to at this time test the impact on water flow. I was however able to easily set everything up thanks to the large display and quality instructions.
The combination of a dial and large buttons makes navigating through the settings quick and intuitive. The package also includes a Quick Start guide, a full user manual, Teflon tape to help prevent leaks, and a spare filter. One thing to note is that batteries are not included, so you’ll need two AA batteries for operation.
Overall, this device provides a reliable and convenient way to water your lawn or garden at scheduled times. It’s especially useful during water restrictions, outside peak watering hours, or when you’re simply not home to turn the sprinkler on yourself. It’s an easy way to save a bit of water and effort while making sure the grass really is greener on your side.
If I had to pick something I wish were different, I’d have opted for metal connector parts. Fortunately this is not the kind of device I’d see myself removing often, so I’m confident in the quality as it is.
Decent sprinkler timer, batteries not included
This is a decent single-zone sprinkler timer. It takes two AA batteries that are not included with this. I picked a few up from the dollar store nearby. It works decently well.
It fits a standard garden hose line, and can be connected to a drip irrigation system as long as it comes with a garden hose adapter. It’s ABS plastic, so I don’t expect it to last super long, but a few years will still be good.
It works pretty well. I used some teflon tape on this to help seal any potential leaks, and so far there are no signs of dripping.
Perfect for Auto Watering my Hens
I actually installed this at our Airbnb property to handle the automatic watering for our chickens and it has been a total lifesaver for my schedule. Since I am not at the rental every single hour I used to worry about the birds having enough fresh water during heat waves but now they always have fresh water. The setup was surprisingly simple. It gives me so much peace of mind knowing the animals are taken care of while a guest is staying.
Easy to use single‑zone cycle and soak hose timer with straightforward scheduling controls
This RainPoint cycle and soak timer is a compact singlezone unit with a clear display and simple controls. The display is LCD and is not illuminated so daytime viewing is best. The plastic housing and fittings feel solid enough for normal hose use, though it is best not to overtighten. I ordered the orangeaccented version but received one with yellow accents instead. It does not affect how it works, but the colour difference is worth noting if you want to use the colours to define which zone is which in your watering plan.
Setup is simple. The instructions mention priming the internal gaskets so the solenoid seals properly, which only takes a moment. The battery tray has a rubber seal and pushes in firmly. It uses two AA batteries, which are not included. The unit retains the time and set schedule long enough to swap the batteries but I’m not sure how much time you have or it is retained during the down season A small roll of Teflon tape as well as a spare mesh filter hose washer are both included.
Programming is straightforward. The dial has clear stops, and the screen is easy to read. The timer supports standard watering schedules plus a cycle and soak mode with three preset combinations handy for drip irrigation or when you ste seeding a lawn and want to keep the area moist, but not wash away fresh soil and seed. There is also a rain delay and a manual watering option neither of which interfere with the ongoing schedule once returned to automatic mode.
Flow is slightly reduced compared to an open hose. Testing indoors during winter, our usual 65 psi pressure carried through with a small but noticeable drop, likely from the narrower internal bore and filter screen. It is still fine for general watering but may restrict how far your long throw sprinklers will reach.
The swivel inlet makes attaching the hose easier, and the builtin filter washer helps keep debris out of the valve and downstream watering devices, especially drip irrigation systems with their fine openings.
Overall, this is a simple and practical timer with flexible scheduling and an easy interface. Aside from the colour mismatch on the unit I received, I’m pleased with this item and it will be a useful device to help keep up to my watering schedule during the growing season.
Simple, Reliable Hose Timer – Easy Setup and No Programming Headaches
I bought this RAINPOINT sprinkler timer to automate watering for a small backyard garden and lawn area connected to a standard outdoor spigot. I was looking for something straightforward that would prevent plants from drying out during hot stretches without requiring complicated programming.
So far, it’s been working reliably and has allowed me to stop thinking about daily watering. Once programmed, it runs consistently, and I haven’t had any issues with missed cycles.
Setup was very simple. It connects directly to a standard outdoor faucet or garden hose with no special adapters needed. The rotary dial design is one of my favorite features. Instead of cycling through layers of buttons and menus like some more advanced hose timers, you just turn the dial to the function you want and adjust. That makes initial setup fast and makes future changes much less frustrating.
The display is large and easy to read, and the buttons are well-sized. Adjusting start times, switching to manual watering, or activating rain delay is straightforward. I especially appreciate not having to dig through complicated programming steps just to make a quick change.
It runs on two AA batteries (not included). I haven’t owned it long-term yet, but so far it’s keeping time accurately and hasn’t reset or glitched. Battery operation also means it continues functioning without needing an outlet nearby.
Overall, this is a practical, user-friendly solution if you want basic automation without the complexity of higher-end irrigation controllers. It’s especially good for gardeners who value simplicity and ease of adjustment.
Single zone cycle and soak timer with easy setup and practical programming options
I picked up the green version of this RainPoint cycle and soak timer, and the colour is actually useful when you’re running more than one timer at a time. Being able to match zones by colour saves a lot of secondguessing as you get things set up for the season.
The timer itself feels like a quality item but is still fully plastic, including the inlet, outlet, and the visible internals. Nevertheless the plastic feels solid enough for normal use, but handtightening to the spigot is still the safest approach. The unit comes with a spare filter washer as well as Teflon tape to help seal on older worn spigots. Included are a well written instruction manual as well as a clear quick start guide.
The setup is simple. There is a short priming step for the internal gaskets that the instructions call for. It takes only a moment, but it’s worth doing so the solenoid can move freely and seal properly. The battery tray has a rubber gasket and pushes in firmly without screws. Two AA batteries are required but not included.
Programming is straightforward. The dial turns very nicely with satisfying detents at each function, the buttons respond well, and the LCD screen is easy to read. The cycle and soak mode is a terrific added feature making this timer better than many others. It alternates watering and rest periods, which helps keep soil evenly moist without washing anything out. This is especially useful for newly seeded areas. The preset combinations are:
* 3 minutes on / 15 minutes off
* 5 minutes on / 30 minutes off
* 10 minutes on / 30 minutes off
There is also a rain delay for one to three days, and a manual mode that doesn’t interfere with the programmed schedule.
Our outdoor taps are shut off for the winter, but I was able to test this timer indoors using our laundry sink. At normal household pressure, the timer introduces a small reduction in flow, likely from the narrowed internal bore and the filter screen. It is still fine for general watering, but sprinklers that rely on maximum pressure may not reach as far.
The swivel inlet makes attaching the timer easier, and the filter washer helps keep debris out of the valve.
Overall, the this timer with its cycle and soak function is a bit better than more basic timers in its functions, but is superior than most in its construction. It is easy to program, and the choice of colour accents is genuinely helpful when managing multiple zones. Once you sort out how it works, using it through the season will be second nature.
With this watering timer, you can have a garden and not give up your freedom
This is a great garden timer. I’ve been using Rainpoint timers for awhile and they are easy to use and reliable. You can program them to meet the needs of your plants whatever they may be at any given time and then change the cycle as needed with ease. Putting my watering system on a timer changed my whole gardening experience. I can set it and forget it until time to reconsider the weather, season, and crop. The timer screws on to the hose bib and then the hose screws on to the other connector on the timer. If the water is off at the hose bib, it doesn’t matter what the timer is set to, the water can’t run. So when it’s raining, instead of turning the timer off, I’ll usually turn the water off, but that’s just me. Then when it’s hot again I turn the faucet back on. That being said, turning the timer off is a good way to do it, as well. It does require a couple of AA batteries so conserving them is a good idea. They last a really long time, though. There is also an option to water on demand without disrupting the program, and you can also use a splitter at the bib or a quick connect so the hose bib isn’t exclusively occupied by the time.
The price is worth the convenience, in my opinion. Unless you have time and bandwidth to water your garden by hand, this is a huge win for peace of mind. I’ve gone traveling for weeks at a time and I just don’t have to worry about it. My garden gets the water it needs reliably using this awesome device from Rainpoint. Comes with good instructions and contact information for the company in US, UK, and DE.
